You do not understand the definition of the word "biased". As long as someone has any sort of want for things going one way over the other, they are biased. For example, in this case, there is a financial incentive for making engaging content to maximize clicks to maximize them $$$s. Whether that makes it more attractive for him to destroy this product regardless of whether it's good is irrelevant to the discussion of whether he's biased. The best anyone can do is typically "making an attempt to appear unbiased or correct for their biases."

It goes without saying that every content creator has a need to make watchable engaging content. But when reviewing products it can go two ways: they are pro or against something. Their "bias" of making a good video will pervade the video in any case, so they might as well share their honest uncensored experience and let the content write itself. Was Arun unfair in his criticism against this product ? I don't think so. Did he have prejudice ? Well if you count his desire to like this product, then yes. But technically no.

They don't want people to waste their money. That is the point of a review, it affects the sales of a product, and tells people whether they should, or should not buy it. Back to what you said, that it has potential. So why don't you work on it and make it a good product, before trying to sell it? For 700$, may I add. A quality product is more likely to garner positive reviews and generate sales through word-of-mouth recommendations. Investing in product development to enhance its features, functionality and overall quality can significantly improve its marketability and customer satisfaction, which will lead to less negative reviews, and more profit. I don't even think you watched the video, and saw all of it's flaws. This thing, in it's current stage, is not better than a smartphone, even for busy people. And I'd go as far to say that it will never be as good as a smartphone, let alone be better than one. Overall, relying on the product's potential, and hoping that it does get better while it is falling incredibly short currently, is not a good reason to spend 700$ on it.

That final point is exactly what I was thinking. An interface in a pin which pairs with your phone for data, storage, processing etc. would make so much sense and be something I would be legitimately interested in. There is even the potential for something like this to act as the controller for AR glasses to remove the awkward navigational problems those have. I can see a pin being a great part of a system but not as a stand-alone device.

You hit the nail on the head at the end. Tell me something this $700 + subscription AI pin can do that my $200 Galaxy watch (likely soon to be powered w/Google Gemini) can't do. It can already do things like check the time or weather, and have the world's information easily accessible via Google assistant. It has a screen that is WAY better than this pin's laser projector. It's also much more stylish than wearing a black cube on your chest. Once it gets access to AI-powered assistants it'll just get even better. The only thing it doesn't have is a camera, but the one on this pin is barely useful at all as you pointed out AND I have a phone with Google Lens/circle to search in my pocket already.

The cost would have been lower, leading to better adoption, and thus possibility to improve the other unique features through user feedback. They seem incredibly out of touch with reality, like people with a lot of intelligence in one area but no perspective in general life. The idea that having a 24/7 AI assistant literally attached to you somehow helps you "stay in the moment" more than a smartphone is honestly one of the silliest things I've heard supposed smart people come up with. Thinking we need a new "smart device" that does most of the same stuff a smartphone does, just without the visual aspect, to stop relying on another smartphones is a peak 'intelligent people being stupid' moment. This isn't going to make people less reliant on apps or a smartphone, they just want a piece of the consumerism pie and they're using the idea of it being "good for humanity™" as their selling point. Also the name "Humane" just feels trashy, especially because now we've seen the device in action it doesn't seem like they were thinking of what humanity needs while making it at all. Even the thought process behind it seems to be just a random gadget to add to the market and make them rich. Calling your company "Humane" seems like they're trying too hard to be perceived as "the good guys" of the tech world. It's overkill and a desperate attempt to build a public image that will sell.

Props for the honest review. Before even watching the video, I could already predict what the issues were going to be and I was indeed correct in that assumption. The other issue is most people have smart watches now too, and all you really need to do is install an ai assistant on it and you pretty much have something that this thing does, without the price tag or need for an additional data plan. That's a great point. In the 150 dollar range I would consider this, in its current form even. At 700 it needs to at least match devices in that range or really excel at something those devices can't do. The benefit of this is convenience, even with a 15 second wait time, I can think of plenty of cases where I would use something like this. (Especially after traveling and wishing I could Google something with one free hand as I'm pulling luggage). But at 700 I'll just wait til my hands are free.

If I was blind, I would buy this. There are instances when being told what is in front of you could really increase quality of life. Sure, you probably know what cereal is in your cupboard (and maybe added brail tags), but having a new room described to you could be really helpful. Or an outdoor space.

The company is suffering from the same issue I have identified with digital AI applications and uses... there is a hardware issue. The answer is more microphones for various pickup locations and frequencies AND a collection of multi focal, multidirectional cameras. The other thing is the Lazer. The Lazer needs to be on an internal gimble with servo control. They should also improve the beam by going for a bigger lamp. Unless they beef it up hardware wise it's going to keep failing. Software is an easy fix that is getting easier.

Thanks for the detailed review, Arun. I agree that this device can be used as a companion device. And we already have similar features available in smart watches that are now GPS + Wi-Fi + LTE enabled. The best use case I see for these devices is for differently abled, especially visual impaired. If they think from that perspective, then they can release features which make the most use of the speaker, mic, touchpad and camera. Laser projector won't be useful. Looking forward to the Rabbit R1 review 😃

You were very genuine and honest in your review, it doesn't matter that you met the CEO, you gave it a chance and you came with a very constructive feedback! That is all extremely appreciated! The company has probably tried to make a product aimed to the wrong market. They can still rebrand themselves or come up with alternative versions that could work. Personally I believe that the product is a first step in a technology that has potential, especially if inserted in specific contexts and customized with features useful for such context. That context is likely going to start more as professional rather than private customers. As a piece of Kit for specific professions that could take advantage of it. Or imagine Making a specialized version for people with mobility issues, giving them the ability to have a private assistant with various features that can make their life easier. The potential is there, the technology is still young.

This feels like the right take. I see a lot of people in the comments wondering why they have made this product when most average peoplewon't need to buy it when their smart phones get AI-features, and while I agree that most average people won't need it, and they should QUICKLY reconfigure their expectations if they made this tech and expected it to sell to the mainstream, it COULD be very useful to professions where advice needs to come quick and without access to a smartphone, like doctors who can't afford to look away from a patient. However, as you say- the technology needs to be WAY more mature before it can serve that purpose. And we just hope that they can remain in business long enough for that time to arrive.

@@jakecarlin9402 I mean, surgeons can consult with each other on things even in the middle of a surgery in case the situation changes due to erroneous cuts / making new discoveries as they dig around in the actual body instead of just going by what information they had before surgery started. In a world where the workforce shrinks and things are automated, a human surgeon asking the AI-database on hand for assistance is not THAT farfetched in my eyes... but of course, that IS provided the tech develops to the point where it becomes actually reliable and isn't constantly dependent on being always online, which I admit could be decades away, if it ever even gets that advanced.

Maybe not this specific version, but I can definitely see use cases for a more refined, upgraded version that 1) is cheaper and 2) much more advanced, probably running on GPT-5 or whatever a much more advanced model is called in the future. Even better if they can reduce the latency in requests, maybe by also having it run on high-speed 5G- which again, will be something that is more accessible in the future than it is now. So this idea is basically too ahead of its time atm. Already I can see the beginnings of a good product; its quirks just need to be fixed and it'll be there. But it's definitely not there right now, and thus isn't worth even considering buying it.

I make freeware voice command systems for video games and general utility, including my OpenAI API plugin, and I can say with experience that they are on the right track, yet somehow still behind hobbyists such as myself. If my "Malcolm" sounded that bad when speaking, I would be embarrassed. I asked my speech-to-text input LLM AI powered ChatGPT applet in VoiceAttack (called "Malcolm") the same question you did, "Could you give me a synonym for the word, great?" ... then, a subtle "thinking sound loop" played as this was processed (yet for such a small input, it was a 1 second return), and finally, Malcolm replied quite human like with: "Sure, some synonyms for the word "great" include: excellent, fantastic, wonderful, superb, outstanding, and exceptional." using my UK Brian TTS voice from Ivona ... a rather older model, there are much more modern ones with excellent intonation and inflection. If I had then said simply, "How about a few more?", before the microphone went back to sleep, it would contextually reply knowing what we already talked about, and present some more. *TL;DNR* This Humane has great hardware design, but many things from hardware connectivity core concept to the manner of interaction and human feedback, to the software and simple logic and flow, and even the TTS voice used, all need serious improvement. This device should be ONLY connecting to your smartphone, using it's much more powerful hardware for internet connectivity and side processing, and a companion app installed on the smartphone.

@@KingRCT3 One of the things which makes LLM AI seem so human like is exactly what you describe, rather than raw robotic answers. That said, some LLM AI models I've toyed with including the GPT models by OpenAI such as ChatGPT-3, 3.5, and now 4, will take instruction fairly well, and in most cases will comply with such directions - but even then, it can be hit or miss, and truly only with further post-processing (also using LLM AI models) could we truly cull such things from a response to provide *only* the direct answer(s). The drawback being the increased latency from user input to response, and that any additional post-processing would only add to that.

I have a Humane AI pin and agree with Arun’s assessment- and will add that the “hands screen display” is really difficult if you have small hands. There is just not enough real estate to adequately accommodate the screen display…. And the set up instructions are brutal. Sure the packaging is super sexy and very Apple-esque but that’s where the graceful onboarding experience ends. I have had this Humane AI pin for all of three hours and already logged three “support” emails as I cannot find out how to integrate my iCloud and Spotify into the settings ( suspect I cannot and will have to subscribe to a Tidal account😮). I agree that the PIN would be more useful if it integrated into the existing ecosystem I am already using

it's not exactly a scheme to develop an MVP (minimum viable product) which can be marketed for bigger investment/getting acquired, it's relatively common in entrepreneurship, the main problem here is how the marketing contrasts with the actual product experience (then again Google did the same for their AI lol). They could've at any time highlighted how this is a long-term dream like Phone blocs back in the day until one of these big companies gets involved, and everyone of them loves AI these days. Could also be one of those companies whose aim is to change the market, whether they personally thrive in that new market or not, like Tesla or OpenAI. Either way, doesn't seem like they can grow without getting a better/bigger team.

I watched Marques Brownlee’s first then Mrwhosetheboss’ reviews of this Humane AI Pin. They were pretty harsh on the limitations of the device. But, it has potential. It’s slower than what I would want. Hopefully he, the maker, has a patent. People would definitely copy what will be an awesome device to have in the near future. Someone will add a very decent camera and brighter reflections to make it a convenient usable piece of tech!
