@@TheAgingAscetic I don't keep my phones long enough to care about battery health
@mystictomato94663 жыл бұрын
@@TheAgingAscetic Using the old 5W charger is good and preferable for the older models of iPhones. Using it for new models isn't recommended though and can do more harm than good. New models of iPhones have inbuilt software which connects the battery and the software of the phone, making 20W the optimal power input for the battery and also making Apple's new 20W fast chargers the best chargers that you can use to preserve your battery for as long as possible. Using less than 18/20W or more than 20W can both damage your battery sooner. I have spoken with Apple technicians and service engineers who all told me this same story. Apple has made their software as such that charging the new models with anything other than 18W and 20W is not optimal. They heavily advised me on not using anything less than 18/20W. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't have super fast charging or turbo charging, so there is no reason why you shouldn't charge the new models with their new 18W and 20W chargers.

@johncanoy51764 жыл бұрын
I think the last 1% in the phone battery is like the reserved gas on vehicles.
@Oystein874 жыл бұрын
The last 1% usually dies really quick in my experience. But yes, there is a "buffer" if you will call it that. Not really a buffer but there is software involved. And if you had a iPhone before (I hope they stoped doing it now) then you would most likely never see under 4 or 5% before it shut down anyway since they adjusted what numbers to show in the battery %. They had a feature that showed it had 100% for longer just to give an illusion of having better battery :P So when the iPhone finally said 99% it was basicly between 94 - 96% real battery life left.
@ashutosh-dv3ty4 жыл бұрын
For me, it's the complete opposite. The time my phone takes to go from, say, 95% to 90% is A LOT more than the time it takes to go from 15% to 10%. Higher percentages last more for me. EDIT: My last 1% is completely non existent lol.

But when you turn off the water faucet the glass is never completely full. So as the glass gets nearly full you slow the water down to get it full. This exactly how a cell phone battery works. Im an electronics engineer and Ive been trying to tell people exactly this for so long. Also, most of us charge overnight so why try to make it charge so fast, don`t peak the battery to 4.2v per cell until right before its about to be used, keep it in what`s known as the storage charge level, storage charge is important for lipos that aren't being used often. I agree with you on every word you said, you also gained a new sub for it too as its rare to find such great advice from youtube. Must add though, a generally accepted safe charge current is generally 1C, so the capacity of the battery lets say 2000mAh would be charged at 2000ma or 2A to be optimal, so if you have a higher capacity battery you could charge it faster, like a 5000mAh battery is usually charged at 5A, this doesnt apply to all batteries and you should check the datasheet for model to be sure, but its a good rule of thumb. Generally manufacturers of batteries like LGChem do make notes on the datasheets of the cells explaining the reduction in recharge cycles by using "fast charge" currents instead of their recommended basic charge levels. Just for clarity, i have some Lipos that are recommended to be charged at 1/10th of C, they are 3500mAh batteries and therefore need 350ma current in the CC stage to be given maximum battery charge cycles, their max charge current was given at 1C, so after designing a BMS to manage the charge rate at 350ma we were over 1000 test cycles before we considered the battery to be worn, when we increased the charge levels to 2A, that number dropped to 200 cycles. The load used to discharge was an electronic load and was programmed for cut off voltages etc to achieve consistency. Phone batteries are obviously designed to take a higher charge current, but as you said theres a big cost to it if its done right, but ultimately this is something that Apple has got right, slower charging is better for everyone and realistically most people charge overnight and have a phone that lasts all day, so fast charging is largely a waste of time. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

@@ChrisSmithy So, in conclusion, you would recommend slow charging? I recently got a s20 which has a 4000mah lipo battery and it comes with a fast-ish charger. The specs of the charger are 5.0V=3.0A 15W for a slower charge OR 9.0V=2.77A 25W for a faster charge. What do you think? Should I deactivate fast charging from settings and keep it at 15W?
@ahmedalaa50154 жыл бұрын
.
@ChrisSmithy4 жыл бұрын
@@raziel325 to ensure you get the longest life out of the battery, use the lower power charge. If you ever needed a fast charge you could always use the fast charge option for that one time. Although both of those charge rates are relatively mild, it will make a difference to battery life. Also, it’s important to note that the incoming voltage/current specifically from the psu isn’t as as important as it may seem, the battery will always be charged using the same system and same voltages, just current levels increase. By increasing the voltage and lowering the current makes it less stress on the cables and the psu, but the phone will still be aiming for 4.2v per cell ( for most lipos ) and will be converting the voltage to achieve this. Really sorry how hard this is to explain, I’m trying to avoid being too technical as I’d rather my replies were more use to more people. In conclusion, fast charge does have a purpose but it will degrade the cells faster. If you can use a standard charge rate without it affecting your life, then it will pay off in the long run. It also puts less stress on the internal components, generates less heat and generally is considered safer. I’d absolutely recommend the slow charging option to increase the life of the device.

Most of this is entirely accurate, but there are a few things to note: 1) The charger has nothing to do with charging speed, beyond just giving access to the listed amount of power. The phone (or whatever device is plugged in) determines charging rate, which is how you can plug a 5 year old iPhone into a 65W charging brick and the thing doesn't light on fire. The charger plug only allows access to power, it doesn't control the flow rate in any way. 2) The ideal charge percentage is not 50% in modern batteries - most hover around the 80% mark, because they're designed to operate most efficiently at the charge level they believe is the average among all users at any given time; basically, most phone companies believe the average of all phones at any given time to be around 80% (since a lot of people leave it plugged in all the time, some are anal about charging, and a minority are dead or low), so the batteries will actually hold their charge best at that percentage. What that means is that the more time your phone spends around that point, the longer the battery will actually last. 3) Not something you were wrong about, but something very important: Lithium Ion batteries are designed to never actually hit 0% or 100%. They have internal protection that prevents charging once they reach a pre-determined percentage (usually 98% or so), and a physical protection circuit that will prevent the batteries from being charged once they hit a lower amount. Phones will never discharge near that amount, so when your phone says 0% the battery actually usually has 2% or more left in it, but the phone is configured to prevent the battery from discharging that far. Once the battery discharges past the limit, though, it will actively prevent charging in the future.
@HearMeLearn3 жыл бұрын
So basically once it hits the real 0% it won’t charge anymore? So like if you unbox an unopened 10 year old iPhone, it wouldn’t charge?
@JudgeNLN3 жыл бұрын
@@HearMeLearn Yes and no. Yes, if a Li-Ion battery actually hits 0% most have a hardware block that will prevent them from ever being charged again...but if your phone reads 0% the battery actually has a good 2% or more left in it and it actively disconnects from anything drawing power, so the battery would still last quite a long time.

So much good information here! One more thing - “fast charging” is 100% related to the size of the battery. The standard 5W charger is ideal for the original iPhone, but the new 18W charger is the SAME for the ~39xxmAh battery in the 11 pro max. It is NOT a “fast” charger. In other words, a 5W charger would charge the original iPhone just as fast as the 18W would charge the new iPhone (within a margin).

ok I had a Note 4 that I've been using for over 6 years and had to change it's battery 2 times during that period.. the fact that phones used to let you open the back cover and replace the batteries easily is something I miss since I upgraded to newer models.. now if your battery dies you either get a new phone or go through the hustle to change its battery in a workshop #BringBackOldSchoolBackCover

I don't like that idea. It wouldn't look that good (no glass probably) and it would be somewhat challenging to make it waterproof. Hmm.. I got idea. Why not make something like a huge SIM tray, but for battery? That would be so cool, and it would look great since the opening for said tray could be on the top part of a frame. I should patent it before telling you all of this 🤦♂️
@jakefoxx79784 жыл бұрын
@@BloPsy_Actual I actually thought of that before. It was just a matter of where it would go and how the ports would function. Or maybe a rechargeable chip you can pull out/off and replace as needed. I don't want to say goodbye to water resistance either, so I'll go for any alternative.

@@BloPsy_Actual no u would need the battery to be on some sort of tray so u can remove it and that would just require too much space plus battery is connected with a tray u cant remove it like in older phones
