The moment he won the 2nd set, you know he is going to trash Popov in the 3rd set. That is why you have to play well against him in the 2nd set as well so that at least mentally you are more prepared in the 3rd set. Popov failed to do that towards the end of 2nd set and that is why he got trashed in the 3rd set

@@Badmintonforall dun think him being trash is a stamina thing. Stamina does not account for the fact that he did do badly at the first half of the 3rd set. Mentally, he is already messed up because in the 2nd set he had a huge advantage but still messed up. By the time he got his act together in the later part of 3rd set, it's too late. If it's a stamina issue, he would not even reach 11 points from his position

as anders antonsen once said viktor is a possessor of extreme stamina , also his game is the most attacking on tour , he has to repeat smashing again and again and be mentally tough to dismantle his opponent popov played first 2 games extremely fast paced but in 3rd game we could see viktor went into another territory and showed his potential as to how he operates when is under pressure

I don't care that Popov lost nor do I care that this isn't the All England, Olympics or all the other Super 1000 tournaments but rather I admire the way Popov wasn't afraid to attack VA in the first set which was rewarded by him winning the first set. Even though Popov "ran out of steam" in the third set, he still fought and defended every point and made VA work for it. Any aspiring men's singles players that want to defeat VA should watch this match and implement Popov's gameplay in the first set. Nevertheless, VA stood his ground, defended and played really well placed shots in the 2nd and 3rd games. Congrats to him. I did feel that there didn't deserve to be a "loser" though.

Mad respect to Popov to staying consistent in the 3rd set despite knowing his attacking asset was gone at that stage of the match. This is the only way to allow a momentum shift if such a opening happen. Axelsen solid court coverage reminded me Chen Long. When you know having the physical edge and not feel under pressure in the offense it is a matter of playing patient and let the opponent make the unforced errors. The Lefty Popov really shows his champion discipline here. Nowadays he is above his taller brother in the MS rankings fulfilling the fans anticipation when we saw him at 17y.
