Once i happened to attend Sri MSGs program in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh in 1980, I requested to play Hindolam by writing it on a bit of paper...he was so much down to earth , immediately obliged and played a song and announced that he himself tuned that song...we can't find such a simple person or artist like SRI MSG...

In Mind, Body and Soul Chakra - Chakra 2( Nestled between the Root and Sacral Chakras) depicts Joy arising out of desire fulfillment;to bring a richer feeling of everything that one does - to remember the joy of life, the joy of living, it is the bringing of Heaven onto earth. Hindolam (meaning swing) invariably evokes a romantic feeling. This raga is associated with Vasantha Rithu(Spring) which is full of freshness and colours,which brings forth the feelings of well being and boosts your mood. The air smells clean and floral. It can be aptly said that Hindolam conveys the moods of Shringaraprimarily. The raga creates increased feelings of compassion and reduced anxiety which in turnprovides relief to patients of low blood pressure. It is also said that the raga helps to maintain normal digestive gas and body temperature along with restful sleep and tranquility. This raga also conveys the divine Bhakthi Bhava and is astonishingly refreshing when sung in the mornings.

Excellent but for that embarrassing glitch at 5:12 when he had to re-tune the violin using the lower pegs. I wonder why violins go out of tune as often as they do; I see players fine-tuning their instruments after every song, almost! And why the abrupt truncation of the alapana at 13:36?

No musician counts this as a glitch - A peg in the peg hole is held by friction - the left hand moves and touches at times ever so slightly the E (pa) string's peg and it goes out of tune. This time it was the A (sa) string - mostly losing friction due to some vibration - once tuned and music resumes you forget that few seconds - it is really silly to make a comment saying "embarrassing" about it. As regards "tuning often" - that is in the nature of strings, temperature fluctuations (often with stage lights), the indian music way of playing (gamakas, use of ever small amounts of lubricating oil) all of which causes strings to change tension and thus lose pitch, hence need adjusting. Sri MSG, is the GOD of Violin playing - He is a violinist of this "top 10 violinists this world has ever seen" - he is one musicians who has no difference between what his mind can think and what his hands can play. He just pulls off impossible things in 1st attempt which are inconceivable by many musicians in this world. There were several such phrases he played in this recording which were impossible things - 15:48 and one more instance before was one, there was one more at 17:32.

I know that since our music isn't written for instruments but vocals that it's gamaka-laden; however, there must be something a bit more to it - and that is, I think, the quality of strings used. You can see hours of western orchestral music where no violinist, viola or cello player stops to retune his strings even once. The difference between them and us can't be that much, surely? Interesting that you mention a lubricant contributing to this...

The strings used by him are "pirastro" strings - they are world class excellent quality strings - the strings are designed to be played (in western style) at GDAE but in Indian style they are played at ECEC (by most violinists) - I am not saying that as one reason for what happened there. I brought the topic of lubricant because that is one difference between western playing and indian playing - I didn't say that caused the peg to loose friction and slip - I said several factors cause a string to loose tension slowly over time thus requiring touch up of the tune. Sorry to say bluntly but you sound very ignorant on this - It is waste of time to even reply to you. I generally don't write like this but being forced to.
