MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War | The Gundam Retrospective

Created in the early 2000's as a celebration of the series 25th anniversary, MS IGLOO was originally shown at the Bandai Museum. Eventually it made it's way onto DVD, so we can all enjoy the Gundam franchises first foray into full CG action.

In one of the cooler bits of Code Fairy - the Gundam Battle Operation 2 spin-off game - the protagonist Noisy Fairy unit goes out to recover the Hildolfr because they needed its giant gun barrel so they could jerry-rig unto a kitbash of a Gallop hover-carrier and a Dom. This created the Dom Gnomides, which was basically a proto-Xamel from Stardust Memory. The Fairies gave Sonnen a funeral before taking his cannon. It was a nice bit of harmless UC continuity fluff.

In other notes with the gnomides data, they were applied to make a refined version of it. Better known as the Xamel, It proves its efforts in 0083. Im unsure of how many were made but i believe it was about 3 to 5 of them.

I'm glad i have its HGUC kit, even though the only reason i bought it was to fill out an order and saw it had a huge rifle. Regardless; it's still a great kit for its age. Amusingly its kit released just after the Zaku 1, the MS that competed with the Zudah.

So funny note of trivia. Ms igloo had both a novel and manga additions which showed extra programs the jotenheim were involved in. Sadly there arent any translations to my knowledge. But ill put what info i know here. The 3-4 events involve the balor observation pod, zaku 2 propellant type, the support weapon aegir, and the false flag unit gm camouf/dahle(from gundam thunderbolt). The observation pod was an upgrade from the current limited production units used by zeon at the time. The end result was despite the high performance of the unit(being able to cut through minovsky particles alot easier to near previous manner.). It was way too costly to make. Thus after the unmaned pod was destroyed, the plans were shelved. For the propellent unit type zake 2. It was a setup to help with long range patrols to be applied to any standard zaku. As such it had several canisters placed all over its body, giving it 500 percent increase in range. Unfortunately due to the setup and the speed it had for standard operations, its frame couldnt handle the vibrations of its equipment and thus ignitions occured in its proppelent from said vibrations. Detonating the mobile suit. And killing its pilot. Data shelved. For the support weapon aegir, i would reccommend kakarot197 video of gundam lore on it for the entirety, but the weapon was a way for mobile suits to fire beam weapons underwater without it being dispersed or (more hazardously) detonating the water in a massive steam explosion like a mobile suit detonation. For the last, the gm camouf. An zaku disguised as a gm to be used officially as an deep reconnaissance unit. Unnoficially, it was used for false flag ops against federation forces. During the conclusion of its operation with a squad of camouf's, their return to friendly lines was a tragic case as zeon forces open fired on the camoufs before they could id themselves(and said forces thinking they were gms). Whole squad annihalated. The project was buried while i think the people who killed the camouf squad got a promotion. Not 100 positive. So yeah, more depressing stories. Away!!!

About a year ago I decided to watch the UC Gundams, in order of the events that happen in the timeline. I stopped a Victory, eventually I will return. MS Igloo was an interesting watch. The battles were cool to watch.

@Retcon_404 11:52 Actually not quite lost to time, you see both YMT-05 Hildolfr and its deceased pilot major Demeziere Sonnen, get recovered during the One Year War, by Zeon Special Forces detachment called Noisy Fairy operating on Earth. They hold a burial ceremony for the late major and repurpose the YMT-05's parts of mobile armour and its main gun, with a YMS-09D Dom Tropical Test Type into what would eventually become a heavily customized mobile suit we've come to know in 0083 as YMS-16M Xamel. I was amazed the events of IGLOO's 2nd episode, got incorporated and expanded upon with the Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation Code Fairy storyline. Kind regards 404.

Dagger L, Raider Full Spec, the Windam etc especially the Windam because in by the numbers, they would make the Minerva to literally look for alternative routes or bring lots of escorts had they utilize them accordingly to their true performance and one company of them could give Shinn so much headache that he would avoiding engaging them directly most of the time. That being said the Windam is supposed to surpass the original Strike's performance. Also Windams are what the Phantom Pain should have as their mainstay unit. Would've been interesting had Sting, Stella and Auel got their own custom MS based on the Windams tailored just for them, might've been Cosmic Era's counterpart of the UC's 4 Horsemen MS. Block words are just a stand-ins for the EXAM and HADES.

One thing I appreciated about the Battle of Loum in Origins compared to its depiction in MS Igloo. The Zeon tactics make more sense in there. Like the Zeon cruisers are all designed with centerline firepower. So in Origins they approach the enemy nose on. Where they can bring all their firepower to bear, and have a minimal target profile. As opposed to MS Igloo, where they turn broadside. Offering no more additional firepower down range at the Federation... but giving a target like 4 times as big. Little things like that. You appreciate them when you notice them because it means someone was thinking about things.

Don’t forget the other Igloo stories. The Federation tankers fighting Zaku’s. The Federation anti-tank infantry unit ordered to take on some Zaku’s with just Tow Missiles. An the Federation woman pilot who developed a prototype Guntank style suit blowing herself up at the end to destroy a Dobday. Oh an the Angel of Death following some of the characters

I loved how they went with some supernatural elements in Igloo2. One wouldn’t think at first that a mecha series like Gundam could really pull off something like that, but then one has to remember that Gundam is, at its core, a space opera - and a space opera is still an opera, and plenty of those have things like ghosts and spirits in them. Also it brings up an interesting question; could newtypes possibly perceive entities like the Angel of Death? Also why did she remind me of Cima?

These zoomed in faces are really unsettling. I like how the actually show that the Advent of the Mobile suit causes many soldiers to fall into the category of "useless". The GM for once doesn't appear goofy to me so I'll check it out. I mean I'm so deep in this whole, I'm actually watching SD Gundam.

I love how code fairy for the PS4 and PS5 dropped a nod to MS Igloo by finding the destroyed YMT-05 Hildolfr and modify a dom with and finally lay sonnen's body to rest. Nice little surprise for those that have watches ms igloo and hint to other things that happen during the one year war that normal or new fans wouldn't know to make people look it up

The story about Zudah get even more interesting if you're a historical tank enthusiast cause it resembles part of the development history of VK 45.01 (P) a.k.a Porsche Tiger and Henschel Tiger which later become the Tiger I. Yes, both Zudah & Porsche Tiger are considered as failed prototype against their competitor that later get mass produced.

igloo is amazing, and i would highly recomend to anyone who enjoys war dramas. its the most UC side story alongside war in the pocket and 08th ms team. only bad thing about it is that the CG did not age well. but its still watchable at the very least, hell, i would rather watch MS Igloo than the discount CG from origin. story is far more understandable as well for non fans.

I think you're pretty spot on with MS Igloo: The Hidden One Year. The PS2 graphics aren't the best, and it's not great enough to be essential viewing or even an underrated gem, but man, if the Hildolfr and Zudah ain't some of the coolest things to come out of it. Another show that's great conceptually speaking. I myself am struggling to finish Seed Destiny and it has been on hold for 3 months now, hopefully I find the motivation to finish it after watching G-Witch and before you release your video on it.

i highly disagree on it not being great. the story is amazing, and it is one of the best side stories in the UC. it gives alot of time to characters to talk and discuss the war, something many other side stories dont do. on the contrary, compared to something like sentinel or even unicorn. the ms igloo 1 and 2 feel far more grounded and able to show what gundam is all about.

I always like when UC tries to ground its setting outside of Newtype shenanigans, but I don't really care about the characters much, and it's not essential viewing of any kind unless you like Zeon lore. Plus, the writer wasn't exactly in a good health when the show was going. I would've said that Destiny is a total trainwreck if not for the still-banger music & cool designs (that still sell kits like hot cakes today).

You better start a prayer before getting into GSD. As someone whose first Gundam was Cosmic Era, I might've got my own idea to fix it in mind. CE is my favourite timeline plus the GuAIZ R is underrated IMO. Lunamaria wouldn't have miss much of the action had she's in the GuAIZ R instead of the ZAKU Warrior, as the shield would've absorbs much of that kamikaze's impact. Not a bad design but the ZAKU Warrior should belong in where it should be at. Edit: the Hildofr is the MVP here. Funny because ZAFT would've steam roll every EA ground elements with just the ZuuOT in SEED lol

MS IGLOO... The MS IGLOO duology (HOYW/Apocalypse 0079 and 2: Gravity Front) in general is one I'm not in any rush to watch. It's an interesting experiment, focusing on the Zeon perspective for a change in the first entries, and lacking a proper Gundam, instead allowing grunts time in the spotlight. However, the CG is a bit uncanny, and from what I've heard, MS IGLOO 1's episodes are really formulaic, following the exact same plot each episode most of the time. It's not like the prior four OVAs (0080: War in the Pocket, 0083: Stardust Memory, The 08th MS Team and Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz). MS IGLOO was an experiment done to celebrate 25 years, and it should be viewed as such. The Zudah episode which closes HOYW is pretty appealing, however, and I dig the focus on Zeeks and grunts. Now SEED Destiny... Good luck. You're gonna need it. What Witch from Mercury is now, was what SEED Destiny was in 2004: popularity not equalling quality at its finest.

the only problem with the "first pair" of MS igloo is the aged CGI. but story wise, its amazing. it is exactly what people ask for when it comes to UC. gritty, not afraid of killing, sad but poingnant, and above all, giving us a glint of the horrors of war. its not perfect, sure, but i would put it closer to something like band of brothers. with small short stories. there's also a point to be made about it being the most grounded gundam has ever gotten, alongside war in the pocket. no super powers, no time bending robots, no new types. just soldiers trying not to die.

I feel like Zeon is really only the absolute bad guys if you agree with Gihren aka Actual Space Hitler. The Federation extremists (which would basically be extreme right-wingers in today's world) that exemplified hatred and terrorism towards spacenoids basically started the aggressive action. See the Laplace Incident. I mean, the whole thing with "micro-aggressions" is that eventually they lead to real, obvious, apparent aggressions. People who do things like that have already made it clear they don't want to talk and have no interest in discussion and understanding. They only seek to prod and poke until those they are acting against take a stand, and then they conveniently tend to go "heyyyy what's going on, I/we don't deserve THAT; well you started it, you asked for it, time to escalate." Then they do a little propaganda and look clean and "good," and voila! Instant social engineering. Not saying Zeon is totally defensible but the message of Gundam is typically that both sides of any conflict typically have some really gross stuff going on behind the scenes and those that seem to look the cleanest are working the hardest to scrub off the gunk. Just some thoughts to chew on!

5:23 completely disagree. the show does a great job of explaining and setting things up for non gundam fans. for example, it talks about the behind the scenes, sure, but its done in a way that its easy to follow. not only that but the story focus far more on character discussions, and how they see the war. which allow people to piece together their own image of what is going on. also, i have shown igloo to friends with no UC knowledge, and not only were they able to understand the show, but also liked it alot.

I am very conflicted on Igloo. The CGI is ugly, but the premise is great. The characters are mostly two-dimensional but the fights are good. I unironically think episodes 1 and 2 were entertaining enough but some of the others are downright nonsensical (looking at you, needlessly complex z'gok rocket). The zudah looks awesome but I'm not sure why I'm supposed to feel bad for engineers who lost the zeon contract to the zaku when they made a suit that puts its pilots in extreme danger and then lied about it. Also why do the GMs explode when they boost too much? They don't do that in literally any other piece of Gundam media. I do like a few Igloo episodes and I think that if you remove the ridiculous shinigami subplot from the Feddie episodes they're all pretty good. Still I get why people like it, and all respect to those who do. I hope you all have a great day.

2:51 nah. Not really. Everyone in the series looks like they’re rejected MGS3 cutscene characters.
