the newsreel could have been an indian. you couldnt get on cinema newsreels tv or radio in empire unless you had the RP accent. wherever you were. its also called the BBC accent . so that could be why it sounds british but anti british in tone. if you watch an old pathe news reels youll see what i mean. regional accents were a no-no as it wasnt "proper" and been occupying for 200 years so would have schools etc there

Kamala didn't travel through time, creating a new timeline. Her great grandmother *summoned* her from the future, creating Kamala's timeline, and a predestined paradox. In other words, in the show's timeline, those events always happened, and indeed had to happen in order to maintain the timeline.

I agree with this explanation.. If you watch the last episode at around 19:52, When Kamala said “You were supposed to save Nani like in the story (Kamala’s grandmother)” Aisha said that “She is okay, because you are here” I interpret this that Aisha already saw what happens in her current timeline.. So she was not afraid of what will happen to her daughter because she knows Kamala will save her in the end..Thus, they didn’t break the TVA time travel rule and the Endgame time travel rule as well.. Kamala’s action did not create a branch timeline because it was suppose to happen.

@@jlomamba5663 could it be that Aisha didn't see the future? she just manifested it. i think it didnt specifically need to be kamala from her pov. just someone from her lineage who would answer the call and she had faith in her family. but only kamala was able to embrace it, and figure out things in a specific order that led her in that fight that activated time travel. nevertheless, i think it's beautiful. i'm so interested in the time travel aspect of the bangle and their species. i guess for now it's just magic

That could be the case- I thought the same, but if it’s true then why didn’t the portal open in the past (you know, when there were actually two bangles in the same space and time)? If this was what Marvel intended, they screwed up again. And how/why did the portal decide to close? Because Kamran’s mom sacrificed herself? How does that even work? And why didn’t it close after the First Lady died? Did it require two of the clandestine? Where is the rest of the clan and why weren’t they there? This is the MCUs most ridiculous, inconsistent, poorly written show. Probably because they took a supe designed to appeal to 13 yr old girls and decided it was the perfect vehicle for a complex, universe-defining, politically themed plot

There's a moment when young Sana has the Bangle while she's on the train platform, while Kamala is there as well, so for a brief period of time there would have been two instances of the same bangle in the same place at the same time, which might have been their sweet spot for having two for the CalnDestines to make it back to the Noor dimension. Also, the effect of Najma and Fariha touching the open portal looked very similar to the Terrigen cocoon that was part of the Agents of Shield plot line, just a lot more destructive

The languages shown in the title cards are Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Parsi and again Hindi. Not Tamil and Telegu. Each of these languages have their relation to the partition. Urdu and Hindi of course are the major languages of Pakistan and India respectively. Punjabi for the state of Punjab. Why Bengali, now? The Bangladesh you all know today was part of Pakistan until 1971 (called East Pakistan). But, the region of Bangladesh was originally a part of the larger state of "Bengal". After the partition, Bengal broke into East Pakistan and a state in India called West Bengal. After Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971 , their national language became Bengali, and to depict the partition's effect on Bangladesh, Bengali is chosen here. Absolutely loving the attention to detail of the creators of the show. Fun fact, the people speaking Tamil and Telegu were actually very distant from the events of partition; these being languages spoken in the southern parts of India.

Here's my theory - As per the arabic folklore, a djinn can possess a human being or any material and control or pass on their powers. So in this episode we see two instances of djinn deaths, one Aisha's and the other one Najma's death. And when both died, they were able to pass on their powers to someone/something they remembered in that last moment. We see Aisha looking at the family photo with Sana in it and reciting the poem's line "what you are seeking is seeking you". We remember from the previous episode that this line's inscription was not present on the bangle earlier (Waleed mentioning it) but it got inscribed after Aisha's death. So I think that when Aisha chanted this line at her deathbed, she was actually trying to transfer her power to the bangle Or the possessor of the bangle and while reciting the line actually possessed the new inscription on the bangle. But the death of a djinn messes with the time-space fabric which caused the possessor of the bangle from the future (Kamala) to come to the past to help (maybe instead of the intended Sana which Aisha thought would have got it). This is also the reason why Aisha called Kamala - Sana when they met. And similarly, when Najma was about to die and called out Kamran, her powers were transferred to Kamran. Now remember, Aisha never called out Sana or Kamala, hence the power were not transferred to the living person rather she chanted the poem's line which got inscribed on bangles and powers transferred to the bangles. Also, Aisha opened the space time fabric (veil) on her death when she transferred her powers, Najma closed it when she transferred hers. What do you think?

I think the bangle falling on the ground is the trigger, Kamala’s grandma had the bangle and gave it to Kamala. So I believe the bangle rolled to Sana, sana picked it up and the stars happened. Kamala is just experiencing what “ the bangle “ experienced from a visceral perspective that forces her to understand she is “in control” of what it does for her. The more important thing is the ability of her power usage reasonably expanding tremendously over a simple 2 episodes. I must give Disney credit, they’ve handled Kamala’s power creep very well.

We've actually already seen this kind of time travel in the MCU, this is just bigger, and it wasn't a person traveling through time, it was information. When Dr Strange looked ahead to 14M futures, he cherry picked which absolute points had to happen in time to figure out what they needed to do, thus summoning information from the future and bringing it back to the past, with that information being essential to the outcome of that timeline. The only difference here is that Kamala is being physically brought into the past, rather than just information being brought to the past.

I'm actually starting to think that in Aisha's last moments she just passed her powers onto Sana or something, and Najma did the same with Kamran. Kamala coincidentally shows up right then because this was always fated to happen; it's an instance of closed loop time travel. Both Sana and Kamran's powers activate soon after their mothers call out to them or wte. Kamala tried to lead Sana back to Hasan with the Noor because she thought she was fated to create the trail of stars. But this fails... then *Sana* manipulates the Noor using her newfound powers passed on by Aisha. Notice that neither Sana nor Kamran have the bangle when they use the Noor. This is because something inside of them has finally been activated (or instilled in them) by their mothers' final actions. Kamran touched the bangle in episode 2 iirc, but nothing happened- because the Noor hadn't yet been activated in him! But since Sana got it as a toddler, she passed it down to her children. Perhaps the bangle allows any human-djinn hybrid with Noor in them to better control it, but if they don't have it yet, the bangle does nothing.

One thing that doesn't really make sense is how Kamala's grandmother knew she was Jinn. She said that is what her father told her. But it seemed pretty clear that Aisha never told him what she was. She had secrets that he tells her he never asked her about. He saw the stars and realized that his daughter and thus his wife was magical and the bangle was connected to that. I suppose that he told his daughter her mother was Jinn because the only magical beings he had heard of were the Jinn. Perhaps it was just a lucky guess that the Clandestines were called Jinn by people aware of their existence.

A Jinn is someone who is considered magical or supernatural. for instance, and t this is mentioned in the show, Thor would have been considered a Jinn in that part of the world.

@Delly Tancyl I agree, she tells her grand mother and she's probably thinking "yeah that tracks, there's magic in our family." one way or another, she could have told her she was a space alien and she wouldn't have been too surprised, it just makes more sense to be something somewhat culturally consistent. (sorry if comment is in the wrong place. KZbin is doing that thing where it puts my comment in the wrong thread.)

One major mistake I notice can be also a lack of research. Pakistan got independence in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month in the Islamic calendar, and on the 27th day of it. As Islamic calendars are depending on the moon, the moon of the 27th night is very thin but the moon is what we saw during the scene of Kamala saving Sana and guiding her back to her father on the train was looking like a half moon. Half-moon is visible only in the mid of moon phase, either on the 7th or 8th night or on the 20th or 21st night of the lunar month.

Hi Ryan thanks for doing such a good job with all the South Asian references :) I just wanted to point out that Hindu refers to the religion, Hinduism, so it’s not a Hindu film, it’s either in Hindi (the most commonly-spoken language in Northern India) or it’s an Indian film as compared to a Pakistani one. Way to go though with Doug

Easier way to explain time travel, a New time line is oly created if something happens to alter that timeline, Hence why Cap returned the stones to their original places so that the timeline is preserved and there's no split. Kamala going back in time led to the Story her nana used to tell meaning Kamal was predetermined to go back and help, no new timeline because it always happened that way. That also explains how Steve could go back in time, live with Peggy and return without using the tunnel, Old Steve was there the whole time, he just refrained from interfering because he was mature enough to not creative mess with history for his own gain.

I'm not sure why they would use time travel as a narrative given that we've established confusing rules already... it seems like they're purposely trying to confuse us now lol I had to come here to get your take on it 😆 Now I'm also confused on where episode 6 is going. Feels like it's gonna be a 40 min epilogue.. I did like the historical intro!

I had a thought about when you were talking about 4th dimensional beings and time travel. In Infinity Wars, when Dr. Strange is looking though all the battles and their results, he is actually functioning as a 4th dimensional being. By using the Eye and the time stone, based in the "flat disk" theory you referenced, he was doing exactly that. It is the explanation that fits when asking how was he able to see so much in such a little amount of time? He had to be seeing all time at once in each time line he "traveled to".

A much simpler explanation to her time travel not affecting the timeline is that she didn’t change anything, her action in the past was already part of that timeline, she just “completed the loop.”

The show (ep1-4) has been a solid 7/10 up until this latest episode like what the hell was this episode, the history was probably the best part about it and that’s saying something because a lot of it wasn’t needed. Like the sudden change of heart from Najma because Kamala reminded her of Kamran was so badly written but going along your theory that Najma will take over Kamran to continue her plan will be interesting. Like they just quickly finished up their story in a quick scene but I really like if they go along with Najma continuing her plan “after death”. I am just scared for the next episode liek they have so many things to cover. 1) How the Djinn story will end. 2) what will they do with the DODC. 3) How will they set up her The Marvels. Like they have so much to do and this episode really only had the last 10mins actually being required. Like the only thing needed was the train scene, go back to the present and do that horrible portal opening scene which should have been extended and the 3-generation scene.

The multiverse theory still applies to Ms Marvel. If there are infinite possible universes that can branch out of timetravel shenanigans, then there is at least one universe where said shenanigans result in the timeline from which you travelled (or at least a timeline that is so close its indistinguishable). This is how the Avengers were able to get away with their Time Heist. They returned all the stones to the points where they took them from and it just so happens that they always existed in a timeline where they had travelled back in time, mucked about a bit, then come back. There is, of course, the Loki timeline which the TVA erased though, which makes you wonder what Steve did with those surplus mind and time stones; the timeline he took them from was erased. For that matter, the TVA likely also erased the timeline Thanos left in Endgame to pursue the stones, so that leaves a surplus soul and power stone too. Maybe the TVA confiscated them. That would explain why they have so many as paper weights. But I digress. The point is, Ms Marvel doesn't conflict with the time travel rules established by Endgame and Loki.
@StarshineGoomba

After the TVA said that what the Avengers did in Endgame was supposed to happen, I just assumed that Kamala going back in time to save her grandmother is what was supposed to happen and not a variant timeline.

@screencrush the series features a few possible nods at the movie Blinded By The Light. The movie is about a Pakistani youth who is inspired by Bruce Springsteen to find themselves and their voice. This is echoed by Kamala’s mom who is inspired by Bon Jovi’s music to seek her own new adventure. Kamala’s grandma also mistakes Bon Jovi for Bruce Springsteen, and the show opened ep 1 with “Blinding Lights”, similar to Bruce Springsteen’s song “Blinded By the Light”.

The reel was voiced by someone Indian. Many have British accents. The Queen liked sending her conquests to school. I didn't look at the barrier scene as an "action scene". To me, it was just the vehicle to show the transfer of power. I'm loving seeing Kamala become more and more sure of herself as these events happen around her.

Great video again but there is one hiccup, the languages you mentioned at 3:44 were actually - Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi again. Well, all the languages you said were among the title cards but they didn't match the ones you just showed in the video. Thought you should know because those who don't know the languages might attribute the wrong text to the wrong language.

At first I thought it was Kamala who would save her grandmother, but that would create a grandfather paradox. In this episode, its clear that her grandmother did the trail of stars herself. So Kalama was just a visitor in that time and didnt create a branch.

I disagree on the whole “time travel rules” part. The “Time Heist” was always meant to happen, as decreed by He Who Remains. The Avengers did exactly as scripted, thus no new timelines would have been created. That was part of the Sacred Timeline. Even Loki taking the Tesseract was part of the plan, even though it did indeed create a branch (that was quickly pruned by the TVA) Kamala’s leap to the past isn’t a change in these rules, just a different reason for time travel. She was caught in a Causal Loop (an event that causes another event, that in turn creates the first event… ie, Kamala was told the stories, went back in time, was the reason for those stories, which in turn allows her grandma to tell those stories… Also known as a Bootstrap Paradox) Even though He Who Remains is no longer remaining, such an event would already be written to happen as he was living at the end of time… so everything was already in motion to happen as he wrote it, and until there’s evidence of timeline tampering within her series/movies, we can only assume that the loop was all part of the plan and within the rules the MCU already established.

That particle time travel trope has been around for a long time, so you heard the story of how your grandmother followed the stars and it turns out you went back in time and created the stars, so the time line was not broken or branched, it always unfolded this way therefore there is no paradox and no alternate time lines are created.

Seeing time as circular rather than linear is also explored in the movie Arrival. In fact, several cultures and languages describe time as a circle or a spiral. In English we often “see” time as moving forward pointing to the future as if it were ahead (as on a road) or drawing timelines from left to right (as the direction we use in writing). It would be interesting to see how Pakistani culture and languages see the concept of time. That must be a neat cultural Easter egg.
