Off tangent story time! Before Ms. M, I could never really understand why people found heroes like Superman all that interesting since he was a paragon in almost every way as opposed to flawed characters like Son Goku whose shortcomings were much more apparent. Sometime after moving to the West from Pakistan, I found out that Super heroes are proxy’s that in a way help people enact wish-fulfillment power fantasies. Spiderman (in his time) was a nerd who gained super powers and went on interesting adventures. Geeks can put themselves in his shoes very easily, enacting fantasies where they too can be powerful. I never really ‘got’ why this was so effective for other people and chalked it up to Western super heroes not being my cup of tea. That is until, Ms. M made her magnificent debut. I picked up the first comic in 2016 or 2017, can’t remember. She’s a kid living in a household with Desi parents. She celebrates Eid. She juggles her identity as a Westerner and Easterner. I’m not saying that flipping through the pages of her book was some sort of transcendent experience. Far from it, I could spend hours criticizing the bad if I wanted to. But finishing that first volume of her comic, I couldn’t help but go “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH. I get it!” I’m a dude so I can’t say I can identify with EVERY struggle Kamala goes through, but it was an eye opener to say the least. Ms. M is the reason why I got into super heroes and I'm glad there are people out there who love her as much as I do. I write and draw a little fan comic of her to celebrate her. And if just one person decides they like what they watched here enough to support the official release, then I really am grateful to you. Thanks! Also, Subscribed!

I think if I was a young nerd now (I'm 59) she'd fill the space that Spiderman filled for me when I was a teen-ager (as Matt acutely pointed out in this video). I love watching superheroes struggle with mundane problems, and the focus on friends, family and community really touches me in this book.

Her title used to get a lot of good points that its original run was actually outselling Carol Danvers own Captain Marvel title but then Secret Wars happened, which pretty much killed its momentum and it was relaunched with a new numbering and then All New Avengers happened which felt she was being over pushed and to make it worse she wasn't as likable in All New Avengers as she was in her own title and her appearances in Civil War II and Waid's run on Champions didn't do her any favors.

Their reasoning for being disenchanted mostly comes down to ‘they don’t like the push for more diversity of characters and creative teams’. They tend to be mostly made up of rather radically-minded right-wingers but they try to claim to be apolitical in their public statements. (This might be considered controversial or contentious by some but this is just what I’ve experienced and been exposed to)

From what I’ve encountered, they do truely believe in the idea that apparently Marvel and DC (mostly Marvel but sometimes DC) have been infiltrated by the ‘woke brigade’, like the people employed by the big two are actually subversives, wanting to pollute the entertainment industry with ‘politics’ and ‘feminism’. I don’t really understand the train of thought of ComicsGaters, it just seems to me that they’re complaining that they’re not the target demographic to appeal to. It’s as if they’re afraid of being replaced or being thought of as in the wrong so, they retaliate by suggesting that Marvel and DC are actually in the wrong and the stories being told with diverse characters are being forced on them. Honestly, to really sum it up, they’re a bunch of reactionists/reactionaries complaining about modern superhero comics telling stories that may challenge a certain status quo but really, they’ll whinge about anything and they don’t care much about how their arguments hold up to scrutiny.

Amazing! I may not be Pakistani. I am Mexican-American. I do identify like Kamala. Such as juggling my schedule list. Like wake up, eat breakfast, go to the store for my mom, then lunch, help out my parents in my dad's bakery, dinner at night, shower at home, and go to bed. That's the part I do when juggle with my to do list. I was never a troubled person. I sometimes need care, pampering, and attention with family, friends, babysitters, and my need of childish escapism to cope along with society as a whole. One comic story in The Champions by Mark Waid. When the young team are on a rescue mission, they fighting off soldiers while using young girls as bait and capture. Later, the hostage kids, slowly decided to raise their voices against the bad soldiers. They don't need weapons, they prefer words and logic over violence. Like one of the girls is holding a sign. To say no more to violence, no more hate, anger, and no war. No more, stop this now. The kid hostages are not political mouthpieces or activists. This is not a forced moment here. Choice, is what matters. All the while, the young heroes are fighting the bad guys in the meantime. They are normal humans with basic and simplistic rights alike. You don't need to be a part of the political spectrum to be an activist. It can be in your own mind, heart, and personality as a whole. You don't need to be a part of political ideals or complex philosophy to act like an activist. I am apolitical and apathetic to fit into the political views. I am also basic and simple minded views. I want to listen and understand about the next presidential campaign, elections, ect. I won't be voting, campaigning, or be involved in any political voting, campaigns, or protesting alike. That's what describes me and other young people as apathetic and apolitical. The Champions is not a social justice mouthpiece work at all. I don't like when some people critique this comic series. It does political views as a passing mention like in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Miles Morales. Not a social justice mouthpiece critique work. A simple story for all ages. That's my view of Kamala Khan here.

Y’know after watching this video it made me realize something: Ms. Marvel is basically the Static Shock of the 2010s. Doesn’t help that the origin of her powers is very reminiscent to how Static gain his (minus the gang violence). If Marvel and DC decided to make a crossover fighting game in the future, they better have those two as rivals.

Kamala is a character that I really liked back when she first appeared. She really felt like a modern day Peter Parker. Her first few stories were great. Really showing off a superhero in their beginnings and dealing with their life. Just trying to balance everything. Then Secret Wars happened. After the event, none of her stories felt the same. It felt like the writer had let the fame go to her head. Kamala has no rogues gallery, she is rarely fighting villains and instead fighting societal issues, and even the art has taken a down turn in quality. I really feel like for Kamala to shine, she needs to stop being Ms. Marvel, get a new identity, and find a new writer. She is stagnating under G. Willow Wilson.

TyranusRex721 I’ve read a little of secret wars, mostly Avengers and Champions tie-ins. The idea of the Incursion really fascinates me, so I have that high on my list of things to read. I’m currently reading the newer Mighty Thor comics with Jane Foster, which are good, Avengers Academy, which I’m really enjoying, and working my way through all of the Runaways volumes, I just finished with 3, which wasn’t too great even though I loved 2. Secret Wars is definitely on my list though!

Kamala Khan is probably the best non-shoehored diversive character in Marvel, unlike others... *coughRiriCough* I like to think that Kamala is a throwback to the old Spider-Man at his best, being just a friendly neighborhood superhero. I'll be honest, I have my doubts at first when I first saw her introduced, because "oh no SJW agenda again in the Marvel Comics". But I gave it a shot, because the covers and page art were drawn beautifully. And you know what? She clicked! I do like Kamala but I felt that some of the of execution of the main series was a little hamfisted and sloppy. Not to mention the Champions series which I found like the equivalent of Captain Planet. Personally I hope that writers focus on the character and not turn it into a mouthpiece. Given the amount of buzz she already generates, every flub they make will only become more noticeable. And those that don't like her will use that as proof against her.

BowarePL Ms Marvel is just about as quality as comics can get, definitely the best that Marvel has made in recent memory, alongside The Vision and Civil War II (these 3 are my top 5 comics of all time)

Frank Castle yeah, of course! It’s one of the most interesting stories ever told from a morality perspective in Marvel, and the ways it effects all the heroes involved are still things felt to this day. It barely edged out the first Civil War as my favorite Marvel event, and unless they make a Civil War III with an even more interesting moral dilemma, I can see it being my favorite for a long time. Ms Marvel And Civil War II were what got me back into reading comics after almost 5 years of doing nothing superhero related except for watching the movies, just because they’re so damn engaging and creative.

BigK13372 yeah, you’re right. The only issue she HAS tackled politics in, the one with the voting and polls and everything, is just about the only issue of Ms Marvel I don’t like. If the series had politics in it, I’d most likely hate it.

Yeah, this isn't a good superhero story. It's a disney romcom with powers stapled onto it. Despite authors bragging about her muslim nature, it's regularly treated as an antagonistic force itself
