That explanation of tones was absolutely amazing!! I wasn’t able to make sense of any of the tones until now! I studied at Hong Kong Polytechnic University for 4 months and I was so discouraged by the way people taught the tones. Explaining it with relation to English sounds contextualizes everything really well. Amazing thank youuuuu

Same here. It's still difficult to pronounce such similar sounding tones and remembering them, ..but this video is the best thing around for learning them. Thanks, Ms Ng!

OH MY GOD I just want to say THANK YOU! You made it SOOOO easy to understand! I could not pronounce a single word for the life of me, but now I actually think I have a chance! I see online that 4 is lower than 6, then how come when you taught "Canada" you made it seem like 6 is lower? Edit: just said some words to my Cantonese friend (Enping) and she understood all of them!!! Before this I couldn't get her to understand a single word. I'd say "hai" 500 times until she'd say "that one was similar enough" but now I said it once and she understood right away! Same with many more words!

I'm confused to as to which is lower between 4 and 6, but it seems that it doesn't matter, the thing I found is that 4 drops in pitch, while 6 is flat

You have given an absolutely understandable and amazing explanation. I am an English teacher and I can say that you have made this very difficult topic very understandable. Thank you SO much for this. Tones are what discourages beginners when learning Cantonese. You did an EXCELLENT job in teaching us about the tones and the rules for using them. Thank you VERY much, Teacher!!!!

This is one of the best lessons about Cantonese tones you can find on internet by far. Explanation about common use in daily conversations makes me feel in confort about what I thought for logic, that some things depend on the context and even native can confuse some subtle stuff, as it happens any language. Thank you for the lesson!

As a heritage speaker of Cantonese, of all the videos that teach the tones of Cantonese, I can honestly say this video is among one of the best out there for a beginner. I understand how stressful mastering all 6 tones would be. I haven't even mastered it myself even, and that's completely ok because you really don't need all six to make yourself understandable. And just being able to make yourself understandable when speaking Cantonese is all that matters, perfect pronunciation is only best reserved for professional purposes. Just learning the four general tones as described in the video is sufficient. Only know the high tone (1), the mid tone (3), the rising tone (2/5), and low tone (4/6) and you'll be set and I doubt anyone will judge you for not being able to tell the difference between tones 2 and 5 as an example. Additionally, you can also decide to group tone 6 together with tone 3 (since technically tone 6 is between tones 3 and 4), because many HKers pronounce tone 6 syllables the same way as tone 3. I personally group tones 6 and 4 together. That being said, if you're able to easily pick out the true tone 6 or the difference between tones 2 and 5 (2: low to high, 5: low to mid), that's awesome! But don't feel pressured to have to learn the minute differences just because most other resources tell you to learn all 6.

As a few of the comments indicate, and I agree fervently, Ms Ng's pronunciation of Cantonese is not up to the standard of teaching others. I suggest checking out "Cantonese Corner", created by an American who's lived in HK for 30+ years. Her pronunciation is much cleaner even though she's American. kzbin.infofeatured

Hi, thanks for your good strategy. There're some mistakes in the transcriptions though, please check them out: 1. dik1 si2 (not si6) -> it's a change of tone 2. 耐 is pronounced as noi6, not loi6 3. ting1 (not ting3) jat6 4. gwong2 dung1 waa2 (not waa6) -> same, change of tone 5. there is no 'ceung' in Juytping, they should be 'coeng', such as gei1 coeng4, m4 soeng2, hoeng1 gong2

Point no.3, it doesn't actually matter because it's still read ting1 jat6 anyway.
@kori228

her pronunciation is kinda terrible, she merges tone 2 and 5 several times (don't follow her advice and merge them, they sound different enough to a native speaker), merges ng into n/m several times (she doesn't even realized she's doing this), merged -in into -ing (she doesn't realize this one either), is missing final k in the first word. I'm fine with her merging n->l (even my parents do that).
@maheshpun4804
@maheshpun4804 3 жыл бұрын
@@kori228 All the things u say Natives do them, 2 and 5 do merge In spoken Cantonese. Ng does turn in to m, -ng to -n, -k to -t. Some more frequently than others but it's not incorrect
@kori228
@kori228 3 жыл бұрын
@@maheshpun4804 2 and 5 only merge in Macau Cantonese iirc. And the others only occur in younger speakers or small populations elsewhere. While it _is_ how certain native speakers talk, it's not the speech variety that should be used when _teaching._ Either abandon the romanization system or acknowledge that you pronounce it differently and that people should be aware of that. Otherwise you're teaching with stuff you're unable to do yourself. You're trying to teach people for communication, which means clarity is the goal. The person learning isn't a native speaker, that's the point. Cantonese as a whole is not pronounced the way she speaks. While it's fine for her to speak however as a native speaker, don't take her as the example to follow. She's the exception, at least for another couple decades. Until then, do it properly.
@charmedcharmed3511
@charmedcharmed3511 2 жыл бұрын
@@kori228 From the way she speaks English, I believe she's not a Cantonese speaker from HK, probably from GD -- especially when she can't quite distinguish the /n/ and /ng/ sounds in English words, which is a common characteristic of Mainland Chinese.
