The part that gets me the most is that Ms. Scribe went so hard after Gryffindor Tower for being "prudes" because they kept their NSFW content hidden, rather than going after Sugar Quill, who just straight up didn't allow X-rated fic on their site.
@salem-01 Жыл бұрын
I think a big part of it was also the fact that nobody really knew who anybody at Gryffindor Tower was. A lot of the people that MS wanted to be friends with had old connections to a lot of the Sugar Quill mods, meaning that if she started going after them a LOT more people would have decided to stay neutral. By targeting the smaller, more defenceless GT, she basically guaranteed herself support (especially because they already had a pretty bad reputation after Jeff)

Tbh her story about getting fired over fanfic is even more #thathappened than all the rest of her antics. Fanfic had been expanding on the internet for awhile by then on message boards and fan sites and stuff, so it had a bit more public exposure than in the ultra-niche fanzine days, but I feel like unless someone was really deep into fandom, it just wasn’t part of their consciousness. In 2003, the level of explanation required from journalists would have been pretty extensive and I still feel like the public response would have been shrugs and confusion rather than righteous indignation. Honestly, that story was really kind of creepy to me. It’s not okay that the Christian mom was being homophobic about a young kid, but I also think it’s legitimate to be a little concerned if your one year old is constantly kissing ANY other kids on the lips. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad is happening, but it’s definitely worth making sure your kid hasn’t been hurt by anyone, and it’s also a good idea to try to explain to her that she shouldn’t do that too much as casual behavior, cause it could upset other kids.

Minor point of clarification: “wank” is British slang for masturbation. “Fandom Wank” or “fanwank” was coined as basically referring to behavior that could be described as masturbatory, be it in the sense of being self-aggrandizing, navel-gazing, or just generally placing far greater importance on online fandom than could be considered healthy. And (at least in the mid 00’s Transformers fandom where I cut my teeth on internet discourse) had a double meaning of applying to moments in official media specifically catered to fans. IE: moments that could be described as either making fans “wank” or the creators “wanking” for the fandom.

I'm old and I remember all this. Even all these years later I still have a suspicion that Ms.Scribe dipped her toes in the online Lord of the Rings fandom (which, ironically is where I actually knew Cassandra Clare from, who back then was known as Cassie Claire.) There are two online personas I thought then were Ms. Scribe. One was supposedly a woman from Chicago who definitely 100% was pregnant by a very definitely real person who very definitely was directly involved with the production of Peter Jackson's LoTR movies; the other who was said to be a young woman from somewhere in Germany who was very definitely being cyber bullied and later IRL stalked by a man who was angry that she wrote LoTR fanfic which 'reflected badly on the purity of Tolkien's work.' (????) I have no proof that these people were indeed Ms.Scribe but the MO, the methods and the tactics they employed were absolutely exactly the same as Ms. Scribe. It is also, possible/plausible that this person (people) saw how successfully these tactics worked to gain attention/pot stir and adapted them; but I do still wonder: Ms.Scribe dat you with pointy ears or nah? Yes, we are all now almost 50 and all this is hilariously ridiculous now; and honestly was then. I found it side splittingly funny at 25 and I still do at *cough* nearly 50.

I don't know if the daughter knows about the fandom drama her mom was involved, but she'll probably have the same attitude most kids have towards their parents' weird antics from before they were born: somewhere between embarrassment and apathy. That's not true either. Her Draco fic was very different from The Mortal Instruments series, the two are not much alike plotwise. She did reuse names, characters and concepts here and there, and she did publish the latter on the wave of her popularity, that much is true.

GOD I remember ALL OF THIS. I was like 16 to 20 or so when all of this was in its heyday, and hearing you say "BNF" made me grin because I've been told I was considered a BNF in that fandom back then. I was just in the fanart portion, not fic writing. I ran _The Chamber of Keys,_ which was my dedicated HP fanart site. I was best known for my Marauders art, particularly my design of Sirius Black that I created long before he was finally described in detail in the later books. I also posted my work on _Artistic Alley._ I also did a LOT of fanart for Lori Summer's _Paradigm of Uncertainty_ series and Siriologist's _Sirius Affair_ series, both of which were hosted on the same Yahoo!Group as Cassandra's _Draco_ fics although I never got into them. Siriologist actually furnished my first apartment because when I moved to Florida for college, she was only 25 minutes away and sold me a bunch of furniture for dirt cheap because we had become friends. I've lost touch with her since then (I graduated from college 15 years ago so it's been a minute), but she was such a sweetheart! But holy god was that fandom ever _wild._ Edited to add PORTKEY . ORG OH MY GOD. The creator of that site used MY WORK as part of the structure of the site in exchange for hosting _Chamber of Keys_ and _Kristin's Studio_ (my site for the rest of my work and portfolio) on his server for free! This video is taking me back, _wow._ lmao

@bunnymcfoo8650 Жыл бұрын
@@error-try-again-later Uh, no. Cassie Claire was established as a BNF, Gryffindor's Tower, Sugar Quill and the other major fic sites she mentions were all established before *any* of the movies had been released, and while the books were up to Goblet of Fire/Order of the Phoenix when all of this was going down (most of it happened between the publication dates for those two books) the second movie had just been released. It was *very* much a book fandom and I know that a *ton* of people in the fandom hadn't bothered to watch them - I didn't see any of them until 2004 when POA came out, and I didn't go back and watch the first two until years after that. I still haven't seen the last three, and at this point I almost certainly never will. I know it's weird for people who grew up with the movies to *not* picture the cast when they think of the characters, but the fandom was already incredibly massive by the time filming even started and none of us had those actors as any kind of frame of reference. The vast, vast, vast majority of fic being written in those days was either futurefic or stuff set around the same general time as the Order of the Phoenix, and all kinds of people were used in fancasts or "this is who my Harry looks like" things - like, iirc there was an Irish actor who got used for Ron a lot, but fuck if I can remember his name.

For those who weren't around during the height of the Harry Potter fandom, there were literal bands that only wrote/performed Harry Potter themed songs. And not like based of the movie soundtracks. Yes! I remember liking GT back in the day. I was really young when I got into fandom stuff and was grateful that they were more kid-friendly. When I got a little older I was shocked that the broader fandom directed so much rage at them for (checks notes) trying to be welcoming to children who were fans of a children’s book. I didn’t spend much time there before it imploded but a lot of the stuff I read was pretty good (according to preteen me, anyway) and I never got the impression that they were homophobic, quite the opposite. They weren’t pro-Drarry obviously, but a lot of them really liked Remus/Sirius. Granted, my memories of the various fanfic sites are a little muddled and I’m not 100% sure that this was GT, but I remember reading a fluffy PG Harry/Ginny fic on there with Remus/Sirius as a background couple. It’s still really hard to find kid-friendly fic featuring gay pairings and I really loved that story. I’ve looked a few times to see if the author posted it anywhere else but I’ve never been able to find it. I feel so bad for all the writers on there who had nothing to do with any of the drama and were left without a community when GT went down, bc I can’t imagine they felt comfortable on the other sites after everything that happened.
