Excellent ! Virboni Bhairavi Raga Varnam The composer of the Bhairavi Ata Tala Varnam is Pachchimiriyam Adiyappayya who lived in the 18th century.He is the guru of Syama Sasthry, one of the trinities of the Carnatic Music. Adiyappayya is well known for contributing the musical form Tana Varna. For this reason, he is known as the “Tana Varna Margadarsi”. He was also a great Vainika. Though Adiyappayya has composed many krithis and varnams, his varnam in Bhairavi raga “Viriboni”, set to Khanda Jathi Ata Talam, the first of its kind, remains unsurpassed. The Bhairavi Ata Tala Varnam contains the Dasavidha Gamakas and several prosodical beauties like Soochitha and Suddha Swaraksharas, Dwitheeyakshara prasa, Srothovaha, Gopuchcha and Sama Yati or Pipeelika Yati (resembles the marching of ants) etc. A student of music learning this majestic varnam should know the beautiful embellishments or ornamentations particular to Raga Bhairavi present in this master piece composition. Bharatha Rathna Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi's redering of Viribhoni is considered the masterpiece in the Music Recording World. This is called the dwi-tala concept.On the right hand she is putting adi thalam in misra nadai and on the left she is putting the actual thalam of the composition Khanda Jaathi Ata thalam chaturasra nadai.Now Ata thalam has 14 aksharas.Since Ata thalam is in chaturasra nadai 14*4=56 aksharas.Now comes the interesting part.Aadi thalam is being put in misra nadai.Adi thalam has 8 aksharas.Since it is misra nadai 8*7=56.So she is trying to adjust adi thalam to Ata thalam through nadai variation. Pallavi viribōṇi ninnē kōri marulu konnadirā [This] blooming damsel, yearning for only you, is in love. Anu Pallavi sarasuḍau dakṣiṇa dwāraka1 sāmi śrī rājagōpāla dēva O Handsome lord of the Southern Dwaraka, Sri Rajagopala Deva! Charanam cirunavvu mōmuna2 With a smiling face... 1. Comments :- The town Mannargudi in Tamilnadu is referred to as Dakshina Dwaraka in Sanskrit. Its presiding deity is Krishna in the form of Rajagopala. 2. mōmu is the derivative (tadbhava) form of the Sanskrit mukha. mukhamu » mohamu » mōmu.

Sir,you have beautifully explained the facts. Even today great stalwarts of carnatic music are using this pattern of talas and adjust it accordingly. For example, the famous chandram bhaja manasa in Asaveri ragam set to the actual Matya talam with 10 beats are adjusted in chatustra jati khandam(5*2 =10) or Bhudamaashrayami in Nattaikuranchi ragam set to dhruva talam is sung in khanda chapu for easy calculations.

Thanks for a very illuminating analysis. There is however a small error. "viriboni" does NOT mean "blooming woman" -- it means "a woman with a body like a flower" (i.e., very tender).

This is the varnam par excellence in Bhairavi ragam.One of the masterpieces of MS.I still remember this varnam played in veena by Karaikudi sambasiva iyer along with Smt Ranganayaki Rajagopalan in the same pace as sung by MS.This varnam singing and playing in veena are immortal.

Varnams are sung in 1st speed and 2nd speed. This Viriboni by MS in first speed is quite fast by normal standards. After singing 1st portion swaras in first and second speeds, she begins the Charanam "Chiru Nou " in a slightly faster speed , say 1.5 speed. When she sings in twice the speed , it becomes 1.5 x 2 = 3 speed. (3rd speed). In reality there is only 1st speed , 2nd speed in varnams. (After 2nd you have 4th, but technically you will have to take 1st speed very slow to achieve 4th speed)

First heard this album in 1991 still mesmerizing voice, veteran accompaniments, My grand mother used to say one cant separate the voice, violin, Percussion . Everything is in perfection.Any song she sung that is the way to sing. Personification of Sarawathi. Happy to share that i am blessed to see her in person at her home Kotturpuram in 1993 when she was about to go for recording for Meenakshi suprabhatam.

@balamss mani aiyar has played for MS in a private concert, where Chembai accompanied on the violin. MS herself has said so in an interview. He also played for MLV in his later years when both of them were at Rishi Valley School. This recording has the Great TK Murthy on mridangam, V Nagarajan on the kanjira and TH Vinayakaram on the ghatam

Not quite sure what that means. She sings the pallavi and anupallavi in the first speed and its double speed (first and second kaalam). She then sings the charanam and the following swaras at a speed slightly higher than the starting speed and also at double this new speed.

Yes, the charanam is often sung at 1.5 speed. But in this case it seems a bit slower than 1.5. She has indeed sung the varnam fast by normal standards. By the way, there's a very nice record of the three violin brothers L Vaidyanathan, Subramaniam and Shankar playing this varnam at maybe four speeds, each time increasing by 1.5 times, accompanied by Palghat Mani Iyer. Very impressive.
