I made 5 cruises to the Med in '68/'69 to replenish the fleet on the USS Rigel AF-58 (cold stores ship). It was always interesting hanging out as "duty electrician" watching all the activity on deck, ships coming along side, and in the case of destroyers and destroyer escorts, watching them accelerate away after breakaway. Other than carriers, watching a beautiful heavy cruiser come along side was hard to beat.

I was on the USS RANGER and 65 the Enterprise and ranger were going high speed (flank) for the Ranger and we were ahead on the BigE by about 18 miles when we took off to the north end of the gulf of Tonkin. Well I'll always remember the Big E passing us and one thing i always remember was No Smoke, we were smoking big time. That ship is fast, if you look up top speed you get 35 knots appox. But we know that's classified .

Read the book "Halsey's Typhoon" for a good story about unrep in a typhoon. The little DE's and DD's were running out of fuel and couldn't hook up. World War Two.

74-75 WestPac in Indian Ocean, took on stores, I remember looking on date of frozen burgers which felt like solid stones. The date of packaging read 1959. There was a guy who was sent in a basket over to the other ship. He was on perpetual sea duty. We shell backed in January '75 in Indian Ocean. 5000 of the crew were pollywogs. The Captain ordered "no mutiny" rule day before. I had my riggers make up a "Jolly Roger" pirate flag and snuck up to bridge and hoisted it on the flag pole. Got sent to ready room where XO of Vf-1 "scolded" me for disobeying orders. I took flag on way out and placed it on pole and marched squadron on to flight deck next day. On way back, we "unloaded" tools and equipment over the side. I kept a set of tools which I still have today. Good times.

@ Maine D: USS Seattle (AOE-3) here ('92-'94). Always great to have the Detroit across from us at the pier at NWS Earle (remember the winters at the pier? XD). I believe the Supply was commissioned as USS Supply early 1994 (few months before I left AD) and was decommissioned/recommissioned as a USNS in 2001. Thanks for serving!
