MSFS | Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation by RedWing Simulations - First Look & Review Flight

Developers Redwing Simulations have released their Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation - or "Connie" - for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and today I take a look and share some thoughts with you!
The Lockheed L-1049 was produced originally to directly compete with the very successful Douglas DC-6 so of course, we talk briefly about the PMDG DC-6 in this video too and make some comparisons between the two.
The Super Constellation is able to fly Transatlantic with a fuel endurance of around 12 hours, and comes with a number of additional animations like Stairs and also, for those flights that end more unsuccessfully and result in a ditching, lift rafts!
We'll go through the Stage 2 progress of the now-released aircraft using the incredible FlyTampa LGAV Athens Airport for MSFS before taking off, completing a circuit and demonstrating a noob ditching to check out the lift rafts in action.
It's about 50 Euros which I personally think - as I mention in the video - is a big ask for something which is in Phase 2 of 4 for production, and the same price as the PMDG DC-6 almost too (which is a little bit more expensive but only just). Out of the two, if you wanted to buy one, I'd probably go for the DC-6 but if you want something easier to fly, with a few more less-serious features then this would be great in your hangar!
It'll be interesting to see how this progresses in the future and I would very much like to see what it is like once it is finally complete at Phase 4.

Awesome review for an awesome plane. This plane is a reminder to all of us of why we need to appreciate the long waiting times that PMDG has, no early release nonsense. While I've been waiting for a Super Constellation to come out, this one needs a few more months in the oven it seems. The amount of INOP options on the clipboard alone is a crying shame, not to mention the decals. I'm very surprised to hear that they consider themselves a rival to the DC-6 at this point with the exact same price (), quite the nerve they've got when they perform an early release on their half-finished plane, something PMDG would never dare. Personally I always try to avoid simmarket-only planes, because most passionate developers have their own website. (Except you, Captainsim, you are an exception...SHAME!). Regardless, I hope that they fix all of their stuff, but even then the DC-6 will remain unrivaled in my opinion. There's nothing like PMDG quality (Yes I'm a fanboy, shoo).

Glad you liked it! It's a great aircraft indeed but deserves the high detail similar to that of the PMDG DC6 - for €50 there are just too many improvements required currently... and as you say - SimMarket isn't great is it - it's never a benchmark for quality sadly and they just take anything for profits regardless of how bad it is (general comment not related specifically to this add-on of course)

Got it with the first Release Day. I Was very disapointed. They wanted to refund me but then i talked to one of the Team. They are 3 people. I decided to keep it because the Model is nice and it is flying well. But they have to do realistic Sound because at the time there is a horrible Sound. 50 Euro is mich but it is okay if they improve. And they Do- join the discord of them

No need to apologise! It's great we have the option but as I mentioned at the start too I wasn't a fan of how the decals or clipboard has been designed amongst other things for what is quite a bit of money

Great review, well done !!! Wish I could say the same for the Redwing Constellation. The textures look rough and the flight model on landing looks iffy. And for 75 $ Canadian ???? I don't think so...

The Connie was certainly a very stylish plane, and they seem to have caught the lines of it pretty well, but the cockpit's shortcomings make it a bit overpriced in my opinion when compared to the PMDG DC-6.

It's funny seeing Lockheed following up Douglas. The original Constellation was made in response to the DC-4. Then Douglas improves on the DC-4 to make the DC-6 so Lockheed has to go and improve the Constellation to the Super Constellation. All are great airplanes but I feel like Lockheed just always squeezed a bit more aircraft performance and style out of their engineers than Douglas did. That said this plane isn't even on the level of the A2A Connie for FSX, let alone the PMDG DC6 for MSFS. Maybe it can get there but I won't be buying it at that price until it's complete. For where it's at right now I wouldn't pay more than $30 (it's at least better than any Virtualcol product).

Excellent review, saved me 50 💶 I did expect more, can’t help comparing to PMDG DC-6. They have set a high benchmark, my next airliner needs to be at the same level, at least with forking up these kinds of money.

Super Connie is indeed, one of most beautiful aircraft ever. I always think that a way to preserve these classics is via flight simulation, so, when you decide to simulate one of these, try always to dig to the bottom of quality, attempting even to surpass the limits of the simulator itself. I love PMDG because they try to do that in terms of thecnology availability and resources. Prices are quite hign, but I guess their work worth it. Redwing is a new developer and I think this is their first work. It seems they are small yet; I mean few people if not just one. Being so, it is outstanding what they (or he/she) have (has) done if we compare with PMDG's DC-6, however, there's a long, long path to be walked yet if we want to see similarities in terms of quality. The good thing is that Redwing has left an open door for further improvements; but being a small company, this means slowing down new projects in development and less incomes, what does not happen in larger companies in which you can create different teams to afford different projects at one same time. Sadly, no other developer company in the universe of MSFS has ever manifested interest in classic airliners, like Constellation family, the Boeing 707 / 727, the Vickers VC10, the SE 210 Caravelle, The DC liners (3, 4, 7, 8, 9) yet. However, the Connie and the Super Connie MUST be High Quality preserved in the MSFS world and in future legacy compatible simulators. It belongs to the lineage of airplanes never forgotten for their beauty, like the Spitfire, the Mustang, the Hawker Hunter, the Sabre jet and the Concorde. They deserve it!

50 is an insane price. For 20, perhaps. There is no comparison to PMDG, and I don't see any way they can replicate things like the AFE.

When you are taxing past the Olympic Hangar,the plane does not look good.Really!.Sound really needs to be louder/better.I've only bought 1 aircraft over $50 AUD being my budget limit and that's the the Hype Pro Airbus 145 Helicopter because it's a Copter.Yes the DC-6 is Awesome and I appreciate the work put into it but at nearly $80 AUD it's too expensive for me at this Stage.The Connie is $68 AUD and for what's on offer is way too overpriced.Won't be buying this.Just my opinion.Thanks for the review!!

It doesn't quite sit on the tarmac properly but that can be improved - that said, the PMDG DC6 is a lot further ahead and basically the same price in GBP

I'll admit, this era of aircraft isn't my favourite, but at $50 it's just overpriced. I'm sure it'll improve by phase 4, but even at that point it doesn't seem like it'll be able to compete with the comparably priced DC6. From the video I couldn't completely tell what was graphics settings, what was texturing, and what was modelling, but the plane just looked a bit inconsistent. The engines looked really good, but the fuselage looked a bit low poly. The panel seeming to move independent to the gauges at 12:53 was something else that stood out as a bit unpolished visually. More important than the visual aspect is the functionality. The "EFB" clipboard looks like it was designed by someone reinventing the UX for interfacing with the plane when all they had to do was take inspiration from the visual presentation of PMDG, Aerosoft, and maybe like Avitab. Making it look a bit more technical and professional would go quite a ways in my opinion in comparison to the rather cartoonish presentation they gave to what might become rather fleshed out systems. By phase 4 it might become a very good vintage airliner, but currently it seems more like an open beta for a product undergoing active development. Especially given their lack of preexisting reputation in the aircraft space, I think there should be some form of early adopter discount. The roadmap is vague at best and gives no eta other than the rather true statement of "The building of an aircraft is a very long process". Still, given they don't have a statement such as "we expect stage 3 to be completed in Q2 2022 and stage 4 by Q1 2023" or similar, my faith in the end product is a bit reduced. It's one thing to promise "All APU failures" for some undetermined point in the future after taking your money. I understand developers need to make money off of their jobs and that it's a small team so they can't accomplish the same economies of scale as a PMDG so the value proposition won't be as good as the DC6, but in it's current state it feels to me like I'm rambling about being too much of a cost sensitive customer in the comments. I really hope Redwing can complete the product and add a bit more visual polish. They have some other planes in the pipeline and it would be great to see another quality payware studio in the MSFS space.

Thanks for the review! I think if I were a radial engine or classic airplane enthusiast I'd want this in my collection, but as it stands right now I'm happy with just the PMDG DC6. Hard to compete with the DC6 which is modeled so completely and to such a high standard.

You can fly this in VR with decent FPS, PMDG not so much, not even close. It's worth the money IMO so no subscribe to this guy. He's too much into the pretty part of the sim and not a simulation guy. You guys thinking 50 is too cheap. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TIME GOES INTO THIS ? 50 a steal for any payware plane. Been simming 35 years, price barely goes up. Cheapskates.

Subscribing is optional - and everyone can have an opinion too derpy - great you like the add-on, and others are enjoying it too but yes currently with its offering £50 is *too much* imo. They have a Discord server in which they are very active and are listening to feedback, suggestions and are trying to help wherever they can. And while the current release is far from finished, they seem to be determined to make it work.

I would have considered getting it as early access but that price is ridiculous. I think the people at RedWing need to rethink priorities if they hope to get this aircraft or any others close to PMDG quality and reputation. If this is step 2 of RedWings road map, then Steps 3 and 4 have a lot if work to justify that price. Fingers crossed this gets close to the PMDG standard and if not it needs a significant price drop.

@@BritishAvgeek I am in advertising and a happy subscriber to your channel and in my opinion, 1) RedWing Simulations does not deserve such a detailed video from you and 2) they know very well that the current quality of their addon is not worth (yet? ) the price they offer (the study level DC-6 from PMDG is barely more expensive). But while waiting for them to "improve" it (?), It brings in the cash of the simmers who, unless they are in love with the L-1049, do not yet know the quality / price ratio of MFS2020 addons! That tells me a lot about the professionalism of RedWing Simulations ...

The problem with comparing this to the PMDG DC6 is that the bar was set so high, it is hard to compete. The RedWing is a much smaller operation than PMDG and you also have to bear in mind that PMDG have brought the DC6 to other sims previously, so a lot of the groundwork was already done. I have both aircraft in my MSFS hangar. Obviously the DC6 is the better product at this point, and if you are only looking to buy one 1940’s/1950’s piston airliner then definitely the DC6 is the way to go. If you have more than a passing interest in this era of aircraft then I think the RedWing Constellation is well worth considering, despite the current rough edges. I have enjoyed flying it so far and I think it is obvious that it will only get better with time. RedWing are a small team and I would guess that they are not nearly as well funded as PMDG (who are well established with a long track record). So, personally, I have no regrets buying it, and I have enjoyed flying what is there so far. If you are hesitant to buy at this price point, considering the state of development then I would certainly wait until they release Phase 4 and take another look.

Great write up from you there! It's not a direct comparison with the DC6 though it's a lot neater. If they improve the sounds in the near future, get the radios working properly and sort the decals/textures out inside the cockpit it'll be much nicer

it's quite a revelation.... at first glance looking at the outside U would say yes this is a great plane. But thnx to your indepth exploration of this experiment it is unmasked as a need for speed invention, probably to secure the studios 13th month, I'm afraid. So indeed, I agree on your thoughts about this product. quite a shame that they can't wait to bring the Connie to the standard it deserves like how it was met by PMDG. You can't fool this Community! @@BritishAvgeek Also beta usually means that it is ready to release in a month or so with a majority of the fetures and only a few bucks, at a reduced price. At this price the DC6 is more favourable.
