Glee was one of the few tv shows in that period of time on television that had a diverse cast and talked about a lot of taboo issues that as a society we are still learning how to handle it. Therefore, there are many things that when we look back on them based in our consciousness and perspective of today it is with a certain look of criticism. However, there are other tv series like 13 Reasons Why and Euphoria that came a while after Glee and continued to repeat worse mistakes.

"Glee" was a guilty pleasure of mine, though I admit that the way they handled Blaine's "Bi" plot was Cringy, even in 2011. This show only stopped working, because Ryan Murphy doesn't know how to keep a show running at excellent quality more than a season or two. There's a reason (most) of these poor decisions occurred after Season 2, the moment most Glee fans agree is when the show's quality took a nosedive (but ESPECIALLY after Season 3). Eventually, the storylines/characters/general plot consistency slips, and it just becomes sloppy fanservice. See also Scream Queens, AHS, Nip/Tuck.
@RuuBjAh14 жыл бұрын

This is stupid. Glee was an unapolagetically out there show. It picked fun at the exact groups it defended. Any "offensive" jokes were made more to make fun of the person making them than they were making fun of the minorities. It definitely had some misfires and poorly handled serious issues, but it brought a lot of comfort and joy to people that felt like outcasts. Anyone that was ACTUALLY offended by these jokes clearly didn't understand the premise of the show at all. Also- cutting any of Sue's offensive jokes would have made the show 40% less funny. I disagree a bit with the Coach Beiste one. I have no experience myself, but I believe not everyone immediately knows whether they are trans or not. That decision was most likely made later on to make Beiste trans so they casted a woman to begin with. Plus I think some people take time to figure out who they are, and maybe that could explain his actions. At the beginning, he thought he was a girl and was supposed to be one, even though he was not a stereotypical girl, and maybe later he finally realized that he didn't want to be a girl anymore and became the guy that he finally was supposed to be. Also Sam stripping is not overly problematic. Yeah, its terrible, but sometimes that is what poor kids have to do to stay alive. As far as representation of minorities on Glee goes, I think that's true about more than just race. I'm a die-hard Gleek, but one thing on Glee that I really disliked, and that we don't talk about nearly enough, was Sugar Motta and her "self-diagnosed Asperger's." I never expected the show to represent EVERY race, ethnicity, religion, culture, sexuality, and disability under the sun. It would be ridiculous to. But as someone who actually DOES have Asperger Syndrome, I would really have appreciated if they had a character, preferably a glee club member, who actually DID have Asperger Syndrome (or was somewhere on the autism spectrum) and was cast in a little bit more of a positive light. Sugar Motta's character stereotypes people with autistic disorders as obstinate, attention-seeking, and having an inherent lack of talent, and the fact that it was "self-diagnosed," meaning she probably didn't actually have it, makes things worse for the autistic community by making it seem like autistic disorders, especially particularly high-functioning ones, are something that people with those disorders make up to get attention or get away with things. Not only is that not the case, but it perpetuates autism and traits/behaviors associated with it as being inherently bad, which is something that I, along with the rest of the autistic community, has a hard enough time with.

I agree ferociously with all of this list, especially the teen/adult relationship storylines. It's really one of my pet peeves. I never find it cute or romantic. I just see an adult preying on a child. However, I kind of disagree with the Rachel/Mr Shue one. I found it really well handled. It's not uncommon for young girls to fall for older guys, but it's the adult's responsibility to "kill" that crush and put boundaries - which Mr Shue does. He's clearly uncomfortable with the unwanted attention, and tells her several times a relationship between them would be inappropriate. I think you should have gone with the kiss between Finn and Emma. There were so many issues with this one: 1. It came out of nowhere. Finn never, EVER showed any attraction towards Emma. In fact, I can count on one hand the times they interacted... 2. They clearly wrote it to show the viewers Finn was now an adult (in fact, the storyline between the nurse and Sam was supposed to be between Finn and her). As if you automatically turn into an adult once you hit 18 or you get out or highschool. Like, no, that's not how it works. And 3., Mr Shue's reaction made it a thousand times worse. Not only Finn was still barely out of highschool, he was very confused because he thought his life was getting nowhere. He didn't get accepted into what he thought was his dream school, and his soulmate was building a life outside him and the (very restricted) world he was still stuck in. The kiss was clearly a mistake born of that, but Mr Shue acted like it was premeditated and treated him like the adult he wasn't. (Not to mention it was so inconsistent with Mr Shue's character as he had been presented till then: a caring, empathetic teacher who knew the psychology of teenagers and therefore, shouldn't have held it over Finn's head like that.)
