It's an operetta rather than musical, but I once rented a VHS (long time ago) of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" with Linda Rondstadt, Kevin Kline, and Angela Lansbury - among others I didn't recognize at the time and thus don't rememer. Still, those names pretty much tell you what to expect from the production,

Sing Street is brilliant. Not just as a musical, but how it illustrates the cultural importance of music videos and the sheer creativity of that medium when it started. Great bands being artistic and experimental because there was no budget and no one had decided yet what a music video was "supposed" to be. And then how that encouraged fans and new musicians to experiment in turn... It's woven into the film so well and makes you appreciate what artists created before the industry got everything looking commercial (and pretty much the same). I recommend that movie all the time 😅

So glad that you included Summer Stock. "Get Happy" is enough to make the movie worth seeing all by itself! I was also hoping that you would include Inside Llewen Davis, and you did! And I really did love Xanadu! Yeah, it was hugely hokey, but the skating sequence in the last 10 minutes or so is worth sitting through the rest of the movie! I fell in love with Sandahl Bergman in All That Jazz (which, to me, should have been included in this list) and her way-too-little screen time in Xanadu is worth it!

It’s just a spanish movie that pays homage to Raffaella’s Carra work. It is made with such a respect and genuine love for this woman and the genre that she created that you cannot feel good watching it. I’m just 25 but I’ve always been a huge fan of her and I think that even if you’re not, when you watch this movie you get it. I wish more people knew about it! 💕

Though not as well remembered as Kelly or Garland’s other films, it holds its own as one of MGM’s better musicals (though I can never figure out how farmer Judy fit ALL those people in her kitchen for meals 😂) Also thanks for including Xanadu. For all its faults-it would have made a better 60-minute tv special than a theatrical release-it’s a guilty pleasure for many of us, with the great ELO/Farrar soundtrack, a welcome dose of Gene Kelly’s talent, and the sweet magic that was Olivia Newton-John.
