I think Isla Johnston, the girl who played young Beth deserves as much credit as Anya. She delivered an outstanding performance and she is not credited enough for it. The first episode is crucial for viewers to keep watching a series, and she carried that weight and nailed it.

ikr, it is a limited series for a reason. She lost things, she gained them back. I wish Netflix would make more series as smart and well-produced as this. Of all the comments I've seen, no one mentions the math book that Beth is holding while her mother is burning her books and papers. The book bears her mother's name as the author, indicating that her mother was a mathematical genius, and that could explain Beth's brilliance.

Yes, on monomial structure, and Alice had a PhD. Alice was 5 in that scene. Also how Margaret in HS said she'd never get caught dead in a Dick Spencers or whatever, and just a few years later when she's got her kid and married, where does she run into Beth? At a Dick Spencers where she's got booze in the bottom of her stroller and Alice is still free to travel and win tournaments. I always wanted Beth to call her out on that too.

I forced myself to slow down after the first marathon night. I couldn't make it past three nights! And that was mainly because I didn't realize it was a 7-part series and that there was a proper ending after Jolene showed up. I loved the ending, the final scene. The part that I really respect about the series was that she didn't care about her being a woman in a room full of men. She just wanted to play and never really cared how people perceive her. She was simply GOOD. She didn't have to be masculine to play amongst men. She just simply played and was good not because she a woman, but because she was more obsessed with her craft more than anybody else. I love a good story without the fricken politics that sticks out like a sore thumb, and eventually ruined the whole thing for me. Beth was like fire. A passionate, flame-like soul, strong and reverent, but gentle, not ruthless, even when she makes a ruthless move. They put so much effort and attention to detail with everything, Queen's Gambit might be my favorite show of all time!!! It is simply spectacular.

Exactly! And let's not forget those reviews in which they try to reduce it to a simple "feminist miniseries". Of course, Beth is a girl in a world of men, so there is also this component. But it is not the focal point of the story. Finally we have an incredible complex and cool female role and the only thing that some people can see is her being female. It reminds me so much of the interview they did with Beth in the third episode...

2 things I noticed: It wasn't so much a show about chess as it was about a young, VERY INTELLIGENT girl, trying to find her way thru the 60's and succeeding in a Male dominated world. And secondly, Anya's eyes are so big and beautiful, it's like she could see into your soul. I think that if I were to actually meet her in person I would "resign" in 5 minutes. Agreed but not fully. There is plenty of detailed chess flair, psychology and history depicted and narrated in the movie, and its so well done that it also makes the movie what it is. One thing they completely missed Somehow Is that when she is playing the child, can’t recall his name, when Beth gets up and starts walking around and doing random acts to confuse him, that wasn’t in the script. The kid had no clue she was going to do that. Anya mentioned it to the producer and then did it, so the child’s confusion was genuine

But if you've read the book, that scene is actually there. So I don't think that was really improvised... Maybe on the kids part to get a genuine reaction.

My 33 year old son persuaded me to watch The Queen's Gambit. The opening scene was as far as I got the first time. Then my son again insisted I should continue watching. It should be noted that my son on average wins 98 out of 100 games we've played. This movie is absolutely wonderful !!! It works on so many levels. I could write on and on about the character development, the chess play and more. Being that I'm started playing chess in the 1960s the scenes in this mini-series just sent me back to my youth. Seeing Beth's wardrobe evolve was liking walking through the early years of my life. You don't have to be chess player, or grand-master to enjoy this show. This mini-series (movie/show) will endure and endure.

Over-all the series is very well done, and as a 'chess aficionado' it was a pleasure to see the game portrayed so realistically. The beauty and obsessive tragedy that thrives among the squares is captured by the production. With all that said there were some annoying, constant mistakes made throughout the production which real players would never make, key of which was failure to write moves down, the clocks not set or timing correctly, the 'flags' on the clocks being down (or 'flagged' as it is said in the game) during the speed-games, even with both players still hitting the clock. However, all that is relatively minor compared to the magnificence of the production in other areas--the playing of the pieces on the ceiling being key among those awe-inspiring scenes.

As a functional alcoholic this series totally hit the mark. You try and get away and get sucked back into it when something triggers you like her loss of mom and game...now if Netflix could do this with Tevis' other books like The Hustler or Color of Money. I believe the video also failed to mention that some guy named Fischer was also somewhat more than a grandmaster, a world champion. Indeed, in 1972, he sparked the last great increase in the interest in chess which to this day is referred to as the "Fischer Boom."
