I feel like the hair/ wig was wonky at some times, one second her hair would be frizzy and voluminous and the other it would be nicely combed and put together. I’m not trying to drag the show but the continuity between shots would sometimes be put to doubt due to the difference in her hair haha ( especially in her younger, high school scenes).

Agreed! Anya Taylor-Joy as best new/female Actress in a TV series. I'm missing a very important character in this interview-video: Marcin Dorocinski: Vasily Borgov! The man was a 'beast' of an antagonist in the show, yet proved to be a very warm gentleman who didnt turn angry after 'being defeated by a little girl', he líterally embraced her! He played his role magnificently, but that 'turn of character' in the end-scene was astonishing! The sight of a true Grandmaster and Champion: Happy to meet a fellow player who's able to help him improve his game even more! she had just 'taught him a lesson'. Sportsmanship is one thing, but that was pure class from him as the character. He played the part perfectly! I'd nominate him for Best Supporting (male)character in a TV Show, i dont know who of the two deserves an award more.

It really is fantastic from every angle. The color choice in the filter, the angles, the characters, the highlights of emotions tied into the reoccurring reminder of trauma and the affects both mother's had on her. The family she never had, but also gained throughput the whole process to signify her collecting her own "chess pieces" in her game of life that she used, but also cherished and protected her like in a true game of Chess. The costume and set pieces, slowly evolving with every minute. I love chess and I am terrible. But seeing an intellectual side to this game through such an artistic lense was really amazing.

You know she's a very special young actress when she can carry a movie herself. What an amazing look she has. The camera just loves her. She's in every scene and she captivates the audience with her looks and charisma. I'd be under so much pressure if I was her. I'd be looking around and thinking "All these sets, all these clothes, all these people are here for a movie that revolves entirely around me and my performance." Now that's pressure.

I cried a lot during this series. I am adopted and did live in an Romanian orphanage until I was 5 (which was old then). Really connected to this series because I made a friend who is 68 his name is Tito he lives 4 doors next door. I am now 26 and was moved by this film. Thank you so much for your post! My wife and I adopted two sisters from a Ukrainian orphanage in Bessarabia just across the Dunai (Danube) River from Romania. They are originally Moldovan and Ukrainian. We spent may days at the internat getting to know our daughters and their classmates. Memories of that time make the orphanage scenes in The Queen's Gambit extremely emotional for me. Even the jumper that young Beth wears is almost exactly like what our girls were dressed in. On screen, orphanages usually are just a cheap plot device, but Beth Harmon is the first three-dimensional institutionalized or post-institutionalized child character I've ever seen. Best of luck to you in your life! I know you have been through a lot, and I'm sure your parents have as well.

A storyline about a disturbed orphan playing chess is far from cliche, the fact that the show can captivate an audience that know nothing about the game is just amazing. The characters, the story, the directing, this show is really unique.

This shows that story writing can be captivating even without the typical 3 point structure or the use of plot twist. Im honestly in awe because of how well developed characters are in this despite only spanning 7 hour long episodes. Definitely a highlight series for me and wish Netflix will pick more of these contents instead of controversial story telling.

@@nad0862 actually the themes are quite common if you put it this way: Person with childhood trauma and their journey to self improvement/healing Or Person with childhood trauma finding love in the people they meet This way it’s easier to find certain stories similar to this, maybe doesn’t count as cliche but falls into common trope category.

Harry Melling is such a great actor. He would play a great Penguin in Batman.

I was happy to see the actress who played Daisy in Downton Abbey as a teacher at the orphanage. This is a much watch mini-series, possibly a new high for Netflix imo. Not a single throwaway scene, they all had importance making the rollercoaster so delish. Anya is amazing and the rest of the cast were excellent as well.

Binge-watched it starting yesterday and I completed it about 30 mins ago or so. So well produced. She was terrific at the role. Btw I had a feeling Anya didn’t know a thing about Chess in real life, prior to film this :P I knew very little, the basics, and it was fascinating all the same. Thanks to Netflix for this production level, I hope we’ll be getting more and more content of this quality in the future.
