Enya deserved an actual spot on the list, not merely an honorable mention. However, as gorgeous and haunting as "Only Time" is, there is one song from her library that eclipses it: "Exile" from the Watermark album. It's a song about loneliness and fear, and yearning to reunite with a lost loved one. Enya's voice is at its purest, the subdued melody helps to highlight the singer's isolation, and the song itself just grips the heartstrings even if you don't follow the lyrics.
@BeeWhistler7 жыл бұрын
I could choose a stack of Enya songs that are more hauntingly beautiful than Only Time... and I'm kinda burned out on her stuff. I never could abide that song. It was overplayed when it came out and the lyrics never struck me as profound. They sound like something a middle schooler would write for a poetry assignment trying to sound clever. Phrases like "who can say" and "only time" add up to lazy philosophical songwriting. I always wished she had sung it in Irish. Then I never would have known how vapid it was and might have liked it better.

I remember reading somewhere about Reznor's reaction when he first heard Cash's remake. He said it was like watching someone have sex with your high-school girlfriend it hit him so hard. He said the more he listened to it, the more he realized that he didn't write that song for himself. That the song was meant for Johnny Cash the whole time. He just got to use it for a little while. Even now, Trent Reznor refers to it as a Johnny Cash song, not his own.

Everybody's list will be unique, and is ever changing. I don't really know why I am bothering, but if even one person discovers a 'new' song or artist that they really like, then it is worth the effort. From a long list of beautiful songs in my head, I would suggest any of the following; 'Fotheringay' by Fairport Convention (Sandy Denny) 'Verdi Cries' by 10000 Maniacs (Natalie Merchant) 'Are You Lonely' by All About Eve 'Come Together In The Morning' by Free 'The Queen And The Soldier' by Suzanne Vega 'Vincent' by Don McLean, 'Nothing More' by Fotheringay (Sandy Denny) 'The Music Weaver' by Sandy Denny 'Mystery' by Beth Orton 'Island' by Heather Nova 'Maid Of The River' by The Levellers/Rev Hammer 'For You' by Judie Tzuke 'Then Came The Last Days Of May' by Blue Oyster Cult 'O Love Is Teasin' by Rhiannon Giddens (Traditional) 'Poor Wayfaring Stranger' by Natalie Merchant (Traditional) 'Epitaph' by King Crimson 'Climbing To The Moon' by The Eels 'Flying Dutchman' by Jethro Tull 'Under The Ice' by Morcheeba 'Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters' by Elton John That's 20, so quite enough for now!

"These Are the Days of Our Lives" Queen For me, this will always be the most haunting song to ever hear or watch. The deeply reflective lyrics second to the fact that it's one of the most beloved performers and singers ever and he's in the late stages of dying from something people knew close to nothing about. And still finds the strength to look directly into the eyes of and sing a heartfelt song to his fans as an honest and heartfelt goodbye. That'll always top lists for me.

Notwithstanding this, the song is truly beautiful, and stands out as an exemplar for this category.

Identify by Natalie Imbruglia and Uninvited by Alanis Morissette are the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard.
@KilledByHangman7 жыл бұрын
Oh, WOW! 'Identify' was a favorite of mine as a child, and, though I almost never actually remember it exists- every handful of years... something or very, very rarely, SOMEONE (like yourself!) kindly happens to jog my memory of it. I; because of your comment; just heard it again after many more years than I can recall... and I still just fuckin' love it. • Totally pointless comment, this. BUT! - I felt an urge to thank you for inadvertently reminding me of this grossly underrated song.

Yeah, gotta agree with you on Mazzy Star there. A few others, too. Like, it's become a bit of a cliche, but "Sweet Jane" should be there, any version will do. And what the hell "Fade Into You" rips off "Knockin' On Heavin's Door" ?!!!?!?!?!?! That could the worst claim about song ripoff I've ever heard. They barely have any congruence at all. What, they were both recorded on Earth? Both by humans? Oh, I know, they both are set to lyrics and both feature musical intervals. Yeah, ripoff.

@@TheWaynos73 it's been overplayed ever since City Of Angels came out in 97 and was on that movie's soundtrack, and I feel the same way about Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls because that got played to death too!

Too much commentary... just let us listen to the music, already. At least give your audience a list of the bands played in the description section. Like most compilation video's do.
Or how about you understand how copyright works and how there must be a percentage of commentary over non original content in order to avoid DMCA...

Not to mention that the commentator has a grating voice that clashes vilely with the artists.
