The pledge was a quasi-contract-if you otherwise qualify, you sign a pledge to support the eventual nominee. If you do, you get to be in debate; if you do not, you are not permitted. Ok. I know the reasons. But, implicit in this promise is that the front runner also sign the pledge. Otherwise, the pledge is meaningless because the debate itself is meaningless. Trump did not sign the pledge and will not. Holding the others to the pledge turns it into s fraud itself, and negates its purpose of party unity. The pledge is voidable, if not void, because the refusal of the lead candidate to sign [and he refused prior to his non-appearance] cuts to the very purpose of the pledge. The benefit is illusory without Trump. It hobbles the ability of the other candidates from speaking their minds. It only reinforces the nomination of Trump. Can the Republican party hold people to the pledge? Sure, if it has complete control of the venue. But it has broken the contract when it demands fealty from the others when the purpose [or apparent purpose] was to make Trump agree to the terms. He was the only candidate to refuse this primary pledge. He was the only legitimate reason for it. Unless the party wanted to defraud the other candidates, to insure Trump wins the nomination. Trump turned this into a game of three card monte. He holds the cards, they are all marked. Rather, it's doesn't matter if he holds all the cards. For he holds the marked one.
