In today's video we are willing to share with you our new purchase of the new tent - MSR Elixir 2. We have been searching for quite a while for a good quality budget self-standing tent. Because one of the main downsides of our previous tent was its height and we were lacking space in it badly. So after several months of an active research of plenty of different tents (thanks for all your suggestions you left in the comments by the way) it seems that we found one that would suit our needs for now. In this video we are going to share our first impressions of this tent, see what’s in the kit, look at the main characteristics of it, dimensions and size, set up and wrap up process. We do plan to make a full review of this tent after one season of hiking. Now we just feel so excited about our new tent and so decided to make this quick video and to share it with you. Let's get into it! Hope you find it useful in some way.

Awesome review guys! It makes so much sense why you chose this. I have a 2.4kg tent as well, very similar construct and dimensions (Robens Boulder 2). I was a bit worried about the 2.4kg at first, but the interior space, double entrances and vestabules definitely make up for it. its very comfortable for 2ppl. to me this is very important since you spend a lot of time in the tent as well. it seems like a really good fit for you guys. I agree with the other comment. try to pack it individually, or at least have the poles and pegs on the side of the bag. it definitely reduces the footprint inside your bag. I also got a huuuge bag for my tent. (I could basically fit both the tent, sleeping bag and mattress into it 😅. currently I only use two lightweight straps to compress the tent. And if I cant air it out or it is raining, I use very slim and light plastic bags for clothes, sleeping bag etc. (don't want the moisture to carry across) and double acts as garage bags, water proofing etc. my packning become more and more ghetto the more I hike. 🤣 these plastics bags are so light weight and good for multiple purpose. they take up no space as well.
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, friend! We were also concerned about the weight of it at first and that's why we were hesitant to buy it for some time. But when we got it and unwrapped it for the first time our doubts were forgotten because we saw how spacious and light it is (we love the colors of the inner tent it gives an illusion of even more space), the vestibules are amazing as well. So feel like it is definitely an upgrade for us. And in the end we chose comfort over weight in this case:) Yeah, packing part we have to figure out somehow with time, also because we got a new backpack so there may be a place to store the poles. We also do use plastic bags to protect from the moisture, before we normally just took several garbage bags for this purpose. Do you know any specific ones that would serve better?
@PixelShade
@PixelShade 4 жыл бұрын
@@WalkingNatureWorld I mean, when you look at it this way, the tent is just 1.1 - 1.2kg per person. the total weight seem like a big difference, but when divided by two and the extra comfort it gives you two I definitely think it's worth it. Especially since you are traveling together. :D When it comes to plastic bags I actually have no specific online source for mine. I bought a big roll of bags from a grocery store that specialized on sustainability. Unfortunately they closed down the other year and I never asked where they got them from. The characteristics of the bags is that they are transparent, they are extremely light weight

After your wonderful video decided to order this tent :) Thanks for the clear descriptions and honest disadvantages. Just as you I was in the search of a backpacking tent that would last and at the same time wouldn't break the bank. Did you guys find a fitting compression sack / pack sack? As I will be in the need to make the volume as small as possible as I would do some backpacking on my own and needs to fit into a 75L backpack, maybe you have some good suggestions
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 4 жыл бұрын
So glad that our review was helpful to you! We also hope that we'll enjoy using it and the comfort it provides but we will make a separate video sharing our opinion after testing it more. We were in search for the compression bag for some time and all we could find was the MSR compression bag that was on a bit pricey part and then some Aliexpress options where we ordered one sack here: fr.aliexpress.com/item/4000640487536.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.45516c37zcHnn4. Can't really recommend it for the compression purposes too much as it is too big for that even though it has two straps but the length of it is too much. So we are still in search for it. Maybe if you have some other backpacking equipment or your old tent that came with the good compression bag it will serve great. Let us know if you come up with or find other options.

Hi greetings from Canada! Great review, I have the same tent! (In its big sack) I was wondering if you have any advice on packing it so that it doesn’t take up like half the space in a 60L pack. Compression sack perhaps?
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for the feedback! We are still figuring out how to store it better and for now started to store all the parts separately in a normal storage sacks. And we do plan on sharing this in a separate video this autumn. But if the space is limited in you pack the best solution would be a compression sack of course. You can find plenty of them on Aliexpress for example, the MSR have their original compression sack as well, someone in comments above mentioned just buying the straps and compressing the red sack it comes in.

Hi! Great review! I have also the exactly tha same tent, and i have to say i am more than happy! About the sack i kept the original sack but i bought two velcro straps so i roll the tent tight and i keep it in that shape with the straps, the bag is still loose but it not bother me because the tent inside is compressed. Also the straps are very cheap in compare with an new sack. Also i replaced the original stakes with Y-Shape because the originals are very thin and they can bend very easy if the ground is not ideal. Have you used the tent after the review?

Hello, that's a great trick, thanks for sharing! We are currently using this tent on our hiking trips and we plan to share more thoughts and tips with this tent that we discovered in the next months. Great demo, very thorough :) How's it holding up after a year or so, and have you had a chance to test it in any strong wind? I'm about to purchase one but I'm not sure how it'll hold up to the strong coastal gusts where I live, I pitch in some pretty exposed locations and the last thing I want is a broken pole in the night
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, we've been using it for more than a year now and have been very happy with it. We had several times the strong winds with the rainstorms at night and it held up fine. The most important thing is to set it up properly making sure that the poles are inserted all the way through then it should be fine. We made another video recently sharing our tips after use, you can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX7NqqZ-gdOtp80

@WalkingNatureWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Oscar! We actually used only the MSR Elixir 2 this season and have been very happy about it, we are going to release a new video soon sharing our experience with it. The video series from Italy are from the last year when we still didn't have the MSR. Overall we find it much more comfortable and versatile than Quechua while being very durable. So we think yo won't be dissapointed if you switch to it and ready to deal with a little extra weight. But you can also wait for our new video to come out where we'll share all the true benefits and inconveniences of it.
@OscarMager
@OscarMager 3 жыл бұрын
@@WalkingNatureWorld Ah, that's what I was thinking! Looking forward to the next video in that case. I'm not too worried about the extra weight, as in on a bicycle. More interested in the extra space - especially head space - with this tent. The package does seem to be a bit bulkier, maybe this can be solved by packing the poles separately and using a compression back for the tent? Good luck with the KZbin channel!
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 3 жыл бұрын
@@OscarMager Then it may be a great deal for you, as these were the exact same reasons why we wanted to switch to it. It is bulkier indeed, but because we have a 70L backpack it is not that important for us, and we actually found a way to store it separately that we are going to share. If the space is important though the compression bag is a great solution, we just didn't find a good one, except for quite pricey MSR bag. Thank you for good wishes! Keep in touch.

Hi, we store our flysheet and the poles together in a second hand bag from other tent Quechua MH100 and its dimensions are around 45*17cm, but we think you can compress it a bit more. And if you are going to store the poles separately it will become even more compact. The tent body we keep separately too with our spare warm clothes.

@WalkingNatureWorld

Hello, we personally don't see much difference either but on one side if look closely there is some kind of a stitch and cut of the material as of the back side of the clothes and we did treat it as the side that should be down. But we think it may not be a big of a deal either side.

Have to say, I was satisfied with the tent for approximately 4 years. But when I took it to a trek 14 days ago, I found, that canopy impregnation started to decompose and seam seal tape completely desintegrated, despite the fact, that the tent was handled and stored acording to manufacturer recommendations. I bought the tent in good faith, that MSR produce durable and reliable gear, regrettably opposite is true. As I've found out, the problem is general, since also many other people have the same troubles. So if you want to throw away poorly material designed overpriced tent every 4-5 years, MSR is your best choice ...
