Have you tried the tent under the rain? I ask because the part not covered by the rain protector looks vulnerable

Not really. It isn't worth the time, because the fly connects to the poles that set up the tent. You can lay the fly on top of the tent before you raise it up, and work from underneath it. but this sets up so fast it wouldn't really matter unless you're in a downpour, which means you didn't plan properly and might want to just wait for the rain to slow down.
