My buddy was convinced that the Windburner was just an overpriced jetboil, and he insisted on doing a side by side boil test to prove it. We were camping in windy conditions, and my Windburner boiled twice as fast as his Jetboil.

I did a similar test in the mountains of So. Cal, and my results were very, very close to yours: the MSR Windburner blew away the Jetboil Flash, every time! And, oddly enough, I can cook oatmeal in the Windburner, but not in the Jetboil. After my own testing, I leave the JB at home, and take the MSR every time! I’ve used the MSR to make tea on summits of 14ers. There’s almost always wind and not much protection from it. It’s performed beautifully so far. (I guarantee I wouldn’t lug it to the top if it didn’t!)

I was involved with outfitter/guide testing for the earliest rendition of Jetboil. All in all... they have not changed much since the fist model w/ exceptions like sizes, materials (TI the discontinued SOL), color schemes, feature detailing, and system accessory items. I had done a 3+ season evaluation assessing in multi-conditions here in Alaska. That's an easy 4-season longevity test relevant to most users anywhere else. My findings and recommended improvements concerning real world wilderness use cons back then: A.) Igniters were prone to routine failures - not to be trusted. B.) A little blaster having no flame control finesse suitable for anything other than the integrated flux-ring pot (only thing available at the time anyway). C.) Very poor wind performance - ie. poor ignition, easy to blow out even running full blast and especially as a stand alone before attaching pot. D.) As a system it needed more... that eventually happened like the little orange fuel can stabilizer, a hanging system for suspension, pot stand, French press, pan, etc. On a positive side and certainly relevant today...Keep in mind, Jetboil is still a good, efficient set-up when well-knowing its 'moods' and capacities given various conditions. The SOL is still my favorite!!! As for the MSR... great, efficient performer and especially overall better in windy conditions. That said, there is some complications many do not factor in: 1.) Submergence in water and regaining ignition is lackluster. and 2.) Spill scenarios are more difficult to deal with - ie. typical gooey or burnt on situations. MSR Windburner does not tolerate these factors well and often harder plus more time consuming to deal with than Jetboil. Hope this lends a hand.

Great vid. But... my flash boils at just over 2 mins. My mini mo boils at about the same. The flame output on your jetboil certainly seems lower than mine. The wind results on the msr is pretty cool tho. If you get a chance, try a different jetboil and see if the results differ from yours.

I noticed you commented on fluctuating thermometer boil temps. Did you know that atmospheric pressure in addition to things like altitude can effect boil temp. for example you mentioned in this video it was very windy outside, its possible you are having a very low pressure system moving by...

My understanding of the MSR reactor line of stoves is that they perform much better at altitude than the jet om boil. That said I have a jet boil flash that I've had for probably 14 years. I've used it intermittently and not heavily but has performed well overall. The piezo igniter has gone out on it. I've also read planes of the jet boil products not holding up right over time with heavier use and the company not standing behind them either . That's coming from guys I know that use them hard in the Rocky mountains that altitude in real world situations. I've got 2 Western trips upcoming and I think I'll upgrade to one of the MSR stoves.

Superb, yet flawed video!!! Edit: I may be wrong, and take that back as I just looked at their site and they do list the Flash at boil time of 100 seconds. However, the Mighty Mo version does indeed take 2:15 seconds as I own one. Regular, standard Jetboil boils 2 cups in 2:15 seconds. This is the equivalent of comparing a Ford Focus to a Chevy Truck. Jetboil makes a ZIP, Flash, Regular, standard model, Mini Mo, Mighty Mo. Each model has a significantly more robust regulator for stronger performance. Great video, though.

it would be interesting to see, but I presume that is not a significant difference between Jetboil and MSR without wind to boil the same amount of water. When it comes to boil water in windy conditions, I presume MSR wins on fuel consumption. Jetboil spends more time burning fuel to boil same amount of water. I think there are some videos on youtube which test also the fuel consumption (it might be between jetboil and msr reactor not msr windburner).

That's an interesting question but I don't have a jetboil system. I just tested the fuel consumption on the msr windburner 1L system with 0.5 liter bottled water from the supermarket at room temperature around 20C indoors with no wind. I recently bought a msr pocket rocket 2 cause i also want to be able to cook an egg or make pasta at simmering temps. The windburner is just for boiling water imo cause i don't want to ruin the pot. I just did a fuel consumption test for both systems. As fuel used is an almost new msr isopro, the big can. The results i got indoors at room temperature around 20C no wind surprised me. Mind the difference of the materials. Titanium vs aluminium. -Msr Pocket rocket 2 with a toaks titanium 0.75L pot with 0.5L bottled water used 12 grams. -Msr Windburner 1L system with 0.5L bottled water used 6 grams to get water to a rolling boil. The Windburner is just very efficient and used 50% less fuel then the pocket rocket 2. I didn't expect that result. The windburner is just designed to boil water really fast to use with freeze dry meals and hot drinks.

Calm sunny day: Jetboil uses less fuel... but it's splitting hairs. Cold, rain, wind, snow: MSR uses less fuel... by a lot. But, there's a lot of videos on that.

Thanks for this comparison, doc - much appreciated. I've been watching a bunch of these comparisons and the MSR has ALWAYS performed better than the JetBoil in high wind conditions, with the differences between marginal without such conditions. I recently and happily scored a similar price for the MSR, and still have a Jetboil knock off sold by Monoprice which is very similar to the Fire Maple 1L unit, which performs about as well as the Flash. Hi Ernie! Love the vids and have become addicted to watching water boil and testing all types of stoves. I’m not sure if your Jetboil may be faulty or there was a gas problem. I have a Jetboil Flash and it boils half a litre in 90 -100 secs, and quite often boils over before I can turn it down. On a windy day it can take up to 3 mins max . Gas can sometimes be an issue, and maybe it was that. Thanks again for the great vids. Definitely one of my favourite channels 🤪👍

I'm not surprised about the Windburner. Back in the '70s we used a Coleman tent heater with the same mesh burning system. If I recall correctly they were outlawed due to the fire hazard of careless campers. Those puppies were warm in extremely cold weather.

This was a very nice video to compare the dimensions and boil times. You will be surprised with the data on fuel usage for each of the burns. The fuel usage is very important on 5+ day trips, especially nuts like me when traveling 14+ days above sea level and in the fall. I have seen 2 comparisons on the minimalist's stoves, where the fuel usage was nearly 100% difference between the 2 stoves. I will wait double the time to boil water, in lieu of having to carry more fuel cannisters. I currently have a 12yr old Jetboil (the only failure was the piezo, I use a lighter) and I am interested in the MSR Windburner as I do a lot of trips in the mountains in the fall where the temps fluctuate throughout the day and wind is inevitable and sometimes a bit strong.

MSR any day. In fact, MSR stoves in general any day, be it the Whisperlite, the Reactor, the PocketRocket or the WindBurner. It's just that the WindBurner is the best option for those who want to do more than just boil water. If you want to just boil: Reactor. You can by the way get the Duo pot as an accessoire (1.8l) that can pack an 8oz/220g gas cartridge. It's about 100g heavier than the 1l pot. If you get the Duo stove system the gas cartridge is separated from the burner and is connected through a fuel line - adds unnecessary weight imho. With the 2nd pot you can choose the best package for your trip.

100% the MSR .. and I do have one. Our local fire crews ended up dumping their jetboils in the garbage. They couldn't rely on them, especially at altitude. And many of them after several uses ended up catching 🔥

I'm new to this style of cooking. Bought jetboil sumo from friend's recommendations. I tested it at home because I've never seen or used one before . It boiled 1l of water in 4.07 Min. It has a 6000btu burner. Looked up msr windburner after watching this video, I am looking for a second burner to open up cooking options. I don't hike just camp out of car but looking to reduce weight and storage. Anyway msr winderburner claims 4.5min to boil 1l of water. I do like the burner system more on the msr ie not affected by wind which is great when hiking but I guess I have room to store wind shield in car. The site didn't mention BTU for msr though

I tried using the JetBoil Zip with an aluminium frying pan in only 1 degree centigrade last night. Got to admit that I did not warm the gas canister first of all but even so I was a bit surprised at how poorly it performed at that temperature with little wind. Doing that again, I will warm the gas canister and also try to create a bit of a windbreak to keep the warmer air circulating around around the unit. I am thinking about getting the MSR instead too.

I saw your video and one other one testing backpack stoves in wind conditions. Yes, the MSR Windburner is by far a great stove in windy or non-windy conditions. However, for someone on a budget the MSR stove is quite pricey at $167 + tax USD. The Jetboil Flash is $100+/- USD depending where you buy it. The JB Zip is even cheaper. By using an aluminum windscreen for $10 or less with/without other objects it is a less expensive alternative. I agree that if you are going to be in strong or gale force winds everyday of your trek the MSR is the way to go.

BTW, I used my little SOTO Amicus stove in my backyard with 5-10 mph winds that we get every afternoon (Redlands, CA). With the attached wind screen I borrowed from my Optimus stove it performed adequately and boiled water in 3 minutes. I've also tried it at 7000ft elevation in the San Bernardino mountains without a glitch. If the Windburner was available back when I climbed the Mexican volcanoes I would have purchased it as the winds are ferocious at the huts.

If you have another thermometer, you can try exchanging the probes (they tend to be mostly universal). A replacement probe is only around $6. But, these thermometers are cheap too and you'd have a backup. Take care down there, Ernie.

Somebody mentioned in here , there were operating nuisance with the MSR??? And spillage? The error here , is with the operator. I have found 0 issue's with MSR. As with all MSR products, they are second to none. They are the standard. They are well worth $$$ I have MSR stoves that are 35 years old, and still outperforming current to date other brands. No I don't work, nor am I affiliated with MSR. But I will be a lifelong MSR user.

I think your jetboil is a bit weak, should try with a new one indtead because i have got boiling water with jetboil in less time! Good video though! I was looking into the windbreaker, but tested my cheap "back up" burner first, an optimus crux lite. I got boiling water in 2 min and 40 sec indoors with a regular coffee-kettle. So then it's just a matter of trying to shelter the burner from wind but that's a much cheaper alternative for less rough trips..

Your thermometer at least seems consistent in it's measurement of water at boil (seems to be around 206 F). What altitude are you at? I don't think anywhere in Louisiana is above much above 500ft.. If you are at or near sea level then 212 F should be the boiling point of water, but if you are at a higher level it could be bang on. (see chart and calc. links). I'm guessing however, that you know your gear, haven't taken your RV to the mountains but have noticed a recent change in how your thermometer is behaving . ;-) You may also need to ensure that the probe is not actually touching the bottom of the pot. Unfortunately, I don't think you can calibrate that particular thermometer....but you could do a cold / boil test, record the offset and use that as your reference point. Funny thing is I just ordered the same Taylor thermometer. I was inspired by Hiram Cook - and you to choose that model and wanted to pay homage to that gear in my own tests.... I am no authority on the topic but I am a homebrewer who does his research. Water will boil at different temperatures at different elevations. That may be why your thermometer was not working. Also, the temperature will rise and lower quicker when the delta between is larger. So water at 30⁰F will boil faster then water at 120⁰F. I'm not saying this is for sure happening but it could be a reason for your issues.

Those are great if you like to do things in a hurry and want to boil some water. I'm old and slow and take life easy so there is no hurry in what I do when camping. I like the option of having flame control enabling a variety of different food preparation methods. A good hot meal at the end of the day is a reward I enjoy. Second most important item is the size and weight of what I'm using , less weight the bigger my smile.

The biggest con I have heard w MSR Windburners is dpill recovery or wetting out of the burner like snow, rain, submergence. It does not recover well to reignite. Stellar is wind and fast for sure but it also “fails” and needs a reset. Was just on a trip with a mate and he had to reset his MSR with a tebt peg twice. My JB Zip was just as fast or close to it and never failed. Ideal calm conditions mind you

I have both the Windburner and Flash and although I agree that there's no question that the Windburner is superior in the wind, you should probably get your Flash looked at. My Flash is able to boil 2 cups of water in well under 2 minutes. Even a stove without a heat exchanger like a pocket rocket can probably boil faster than your Flash!

Id buy the firemaple mars over the MSR its half the price and performs just as well. Everything gets compared to the jetboil flash and with good reason it wont let you down, ive hammered mine for 4 years and hasnt skipped a beat even the piezo still works fine 👍

Wind, altitude and ambient temp are important, but I've never really been in a rush to boil my water. [Melting snow can be a different story. That can take an age]. I was recently using my first gen. JB Flash at 700m, -7 C. I was surprised how well it performed. the 'trick' was simply to use a (near) full canister [and of quality iso-butane mix]. I'm looking at getting a regulated stove for when the canisters get empty. I like the look of the JB ceramic 1.5l pot for van camping - easy to clean, oh yeah! Anyone tried this pot with a MSR PR deluxe?

I have taken cold water right from a mountain creek in my jet boil and had boiling water in less than two minutes. I have timed it just for info. My biggest issue with MSR is the durability. My buddy has gone through three MSR stoves and I’m on my original jet boil from five or six years ago.

Your Jetboil Flash boil time is completely incorrect. Mine boils on average of 130 seconds. You did not fully turn the valve on the jetboil. This is misleading people to believe that the MSR is over twice as fast which is false and several other videos prove this.

I have seen you say that the flash does not have flame control before, the flash has very good flame control, i dont understand why you say this? I have had a flash for like 12 years and it still has an adjustable feature for the flame control. Maybe something is wrong with yours?

Jetboil themselves will tell you the Flash and Zip have crappy flame control. Just because you can turn the flame low doesnt mean you have flame control. Its basically, on, low/suffocating, and then off. At its low flame a mouse fart could blow it out so its not really even usable. A MicroMo or MiniMo, by comparison, has a smooth flame control that ramps up and down. There is a HUGE difference between the two burners.

I'm not sure counting seconds means that much to me. If a category of stoves (in this case "self contained cooking systems") boil the same volume of water within one or two minutes of one another then that performance metric seems essentially all the same to me. (If seconds count and you're running a stopwatch on your backcountry trips you might consider the possibility you're doing it wrong :-) Within a given performance ballpark my eyes start to glaze over when I start hearing details like "10.78 ounces of water at 65 degrees in 2min25 seconds vs. 2min 42seconds. That's just basically "the same" to me on that measure... Wind resistance is interesting but any stove can be sheltered from the wind in order to optimize performance. For stoves that need a separate wind screen to achieve peak performance in windy conditions, that fact, and required accessory should be factored into the overall equation. MSR Windburner just happens to have an integrated windscreen that's all. A wind test that pits the built in windscreen on the MSR against a Jetboil without one just feels like an unfair comparison. Put a screen around the Jetboil and include it on other measures like packability and weight. That said, I own a Jetboil Flash and absolutely LOVE it......but I'm a "fan" of all things MSR and have made genuine efforts to find a way to justify buying a Windburner and just can't...even with comparisons like this one.

Wow sounds like a lot of cons for both products especially zero flame control for the MSR windburner! Yes it boils water fast, but so too just about every quality gas canister stove like the Soto Amicus,Wind Master, Etc. I noticed that you mentioned they make a frying pan but what would be the point if you have no flame control? Are you cooking at full blast in a frying pan? Who cooks like that? I say just stick with a high-quality gas canister stove that weighs almost nothing, and use titanium pots and pans as you need.

You're confusing the stoves. The MSR Windburner has flame control and will simmer. MSR makes a number of pots and pans but they actually dont recommend using the personal system with them as its top heavy so they suggest the Windburner Duo. The Jetboil Flash and Zip are the models that cant simmer as they lack a regulator and are only made to boil. The Jetboil MicroMo and MiniMo are the models that retain a regulator, and will simmer well, with a slightly slower boil time. As far as the Soto stoves go, or any light "wind resistant" stove like the Pocket Rocket Deluxe, they dont work nearly as well in constant wind as fully shielded systems like the Windburner or Reactor. They'll stay lit but the flame is still displaced and you lose a ton of heat where the Windburner really doesnt care. It can easily take 15-18 minutes to boil with the Soto in alpine conditions. You'll never have a simmer flame with a Windmaster with any sort of wind either. It will just blow out.

@@natea1042 Thanks for the clarification. Still a little on the heavy and bulky side, maybe good for car camping. Never had much in the the way of wind problems with my Soto Amicus. It will support a small cast iron pan, and will boil water quickly. I carry a couple of titanium pots, and my stove, plus a gas canister, and the weight is negligible. A few seconds difference in boiling times is not that important. I could probably purchase a Windmaster, and one Amicus, plus a Soto cookset for the price of one MSR Windburner.

​@@msilverhammer Its a bit small for car camping unless your solo. With car camping you can afford the convenience of a 2 burner setup. Its ideal for larger parties though with its 4.5L stock pot, 2.5L sauce pot, and 1.5L skillet, that all nests into eachother so the single system will easily cook for the group. But like I said their primary design goal was a burner system that is impervious to wind and they did that. Most people dont do alpine camping and high elevation camping but the Reactor and Windburner stoves have become incredibly popular in these cold harsh environments where ultra light stoves wont work well, or at all, because you lose tons of efficiency. One other neat feature of the Windburner and Jetboil systems is the option to purchase an integrated coffee press so you can make your own brew instead of drinking instant coffee all the time. It works really well at frothing rehydrated milk too if you want a trail cappuccino. As with any type of backpacking there is always give and take with regards to what people bring with them to make themselves as comfortable as possible.

@@natea1042 I watched the video again, and I am trying to justify the weight, and the expense in my mind, and unless I know that I am going to be in extremely cold, and windy weather, I just can't think of a good reason to purchase the MSR WIndburner. Like I stated before, my Soto Amicus with it's four legged pot stand, and Piezo Electric Stealth Igniter weighs almost nothing, has great wind resistance, will simmer great, and boil water fast, and will support an 8" cast iron pan, that I use to cook some meals when I am out in a camping area of a park, but not actually way out on a trail, or in the wilderness. I would not carry a heavy cast iron pan on a trail, unless I had an extremely good reason, or was traveling via Kayak, Canoe, Boat, or some other type of vehicle, or on horseback, as I have lightweight titanium, and stainless pots that I use when on foot. When I worked in the wilderness of Alaska, and traveled via Kayak, I used the MSR Whisperlite Stove which worked very good, and sometimes I used a wind screen to help block the wind. IMHO...Gear like this is made for "Glampers," who like to purchase and collect expensive gear!

I have no doubt that the msr is a good kit. My jetboil flash has never taken that long. I really dont know what went wrong, my results are more like 2 to 2 and a half minutes. never 8

Looking to upgrade my Jetboil Flash…but man…can’t MSR make a system with a built in igniter? But I can tell, your jetboil is not turned up all the way. It should sound a lot louder…kind of deceiving tbh…
