MSR XGK EX Military Multi Fuel Stove Review

My review of this MSR stove from eBay, the seller ironick29. I am prior US Army 23rd Infantry, we never had a stove as good as this one here to use!! It will operate on White Gas, Kerosene, Auto Gas, Jet A Fuel, Aviation 100LL Fuel, Diesel, Naphtha, Mineral Spirits. In this demonstration I used White Gas without having to change the fuel feed jet orifice. This stove comes with the "XJ" Jet installed for burning Jet "A". The same jet works with White Gas.

Around 1980 I bought a MSR GK (forerunner to the XGK) multi-fuel stove while serving with the US Army Special Forces in Europe. Best liquid fuel stove I've ever owned, and I've owned serveral and used many. I used it on +14,000' mountain tops, above the artic circle, every winter, and in the middle east and north African deserts for weeks and months at a time. I have burned white gas, unleaded and leaded gas (have to do a lot of cleaning to get the lead out of the fuel line), Naphtha, kerosene, aviation fuel, and diesel (don't recommend diesel unless you have no other choice) without any issues. I still have and use the stove. I highly recommend this stove for mountaineering and winter camping. The fuel bottle and stove is a lot heavier than canister stoves, but if you're going where cannisters are hard to find and need a liquid fuel stove, you cannot beat the MSR XGK-EX.

Owned one of these for 35 years. They are loud, no doubt, but fast and effective. A little hint, when turning stove off, blow out the flame when it turns yellow again. This helps prevent carbon buildup.

Awesome video, thanks! For anyone wondering or trying to duplicate the jetting chart: JP8, kerosene and diesel should all burn using the same jet. They are very similar products. White gas (shellite, lighter fluid) and automotive gas (petrol) should use the same jet. The last jet to round out the series is one for alcohol & denatured alcohol (aka methylated spirits). From largest hole to smallest you'll go diesel, gas then alcohol. The orifice size is based on the viscosity of the fuel as well as how easily it vaporises.

I bought one. When i was in the Army, we ate cold C-Rations because there was NOTHING for the private soldier, not even fire tabs. A hot drink can completely change an attitude.

yea it's noisy just like a jet afterburn and it may not be quite as fast as a jetboil but hell i've had this thing since the 80s and it's still blowin and goin. never burn anything but white gas, never had to clean anything. had a flint lighter gizmo that fell off, good riddance. and the legs and pot supports are pretty minimal compared to this deluxee model. but hey it works for me.

I have the non-military one. It came with a gas jet and a fuel oil jet. Combustible fuels use the big jet and flammable fuels use the small jet. I have used it with peanut oil, vegetable oil diesel, alcohol, white gas, gasoline, and mineral spirits. What I decided was still the best is mineral spirits. Mainly because you can get it at any home improvement store in a small plastic bottle or can that is just the right size to fill my fuel bottles. Burns real clean like white gas. Costs the same as camp fuel.

I have this exact kit. Very good snow melted. My go to stove for big groups when we have to melt large amounts of snow. I love my Optimus 199 and 111T

Notice the little gray protective cap on the pump plunger handle. That only exists on the XGK EX JP8 kit.

The fill line is actually that little line that's almost totally worn off right at the top before the bottle starts to taper down to the neck. You pointed to the line barely halfway up the bottle.

Sniperjdp - the reason the supplied MSR fuel bottle(s) were not designed to fit in the MSR supplied, Cascade Designs waterproof kitbag is due to the fact that if a fuel bottle leaked, it would eventually 'eat' its way through bag material. Even over a period of time and even with very minor fuel-fume leaks, the bag would eventually fail and fall apart.

Good video.Been using these stoves since the late 1970's. My first was the model G (gasoline only). I upgraded to the GK so I could burn diesel and never did. Gave it to my Green Beret brother when I upgraded to the X-GK. For absolutely no sane reason I recently purchased the model shown in this video., the XGK-EX. I've used these noisy beasts in a Wyoming winter, the Mojave Desert, on the summit of Long's Peak, and the dripping humidity of southern Louisiana summers. One and only one complaint. Actually, it's more of an observation than a complaint: simmering with this critter requires a lot of attention. I almost exclusively boil water (freeze dried, heating soft retort packages (MRE's), coffee/tea, etc., but I do fry fish and bread dough. Be prepared for a grease fire if you have your head up your ass. In closing, never underestimate the utility of a field maintainable stove. I chose my canister stove (Snow Peak Gigapower Titanium) strictly because a field repair kit is available.

this is made for high altitude snow melting in low temps..thats about it..most other stoves dont work at high elevation and cold temps like this one. its a rocket made to boil water for climbers..thats what it was originally designed for.

+matanuska high Exactly. It wasn't designed for the military. It's just another commercial off-the-shelf product that the .mil can spend twice as much money on to get it in the tactical color.

I'm gonna score one of these. I love the idea of it burning unleaded gas as I hike a lot of non traditional trails and resupply won't be a problem with this stove. I hope it doesn't weigh too much but will see. Good video

Greetings, Sir, As a long time user of MSR stove, and being particularly fond of the X-GK family, I was happy to find one of these in a local Surplus stove, yesterday! May I ask, where did you get that Jet Chart that you show us? I'd love to have a copy that's more clear and easy to read. I tried to take a screen shot of your chart, but it wasn't very sharp, and was a bit out of focus, mainly due to being hand held. I know this is an older post, but if you do read these, and if you can let me know more about the Jet Chart, I'd very much appreciate it! Thank you for your service, Brother. Hi from the UK. I own a 30 year old MSR XGK with the large fuel bottle and a service kit which I bought new in 1990. It came with a G jet for gasoline and a K jet for kerosene. I haven't burnt any other fuels in this stove. The only modification done was to shorten the four pot stand supports bringing the flame closer to my UK military mess tins. This is indeed a very powerful stove which boils water quickly. A truly amazing bit of kit. There are some good reviews on the classiccampstoves.com website. I definitely recommend readers to look them up. JD. PS. If in doubt, brew up.

great stove for melting snow and ice, or boiling large pots of water. not so good for actual cooking but if you are careful, you can run it at a low flame by using as little fuel pressure as possible. the trick is to start with a full fuel bottle (white gas filled to the full line on the outside of the bottle) and pump it up 5 pump strokes. open the valve to saturate the priming pad under the burner, close it, light the priming pad and allow all of the priming fuel to burn out before opening the valve. if you do it right, the stove should burn at a low flame, just above a typical simmering flame. as the pressure in the bottle drops the flame will get lower so you will have to give it a pump stroke or two every now and then. the biggest problem with this stove design is that if you run it at a high flame setting, there is no easy way to turn it down to a low flame.

MSR stopped using Sigg bottles a long time ago so you cannot use a Sigg bottle!

@@fernandogdelreal5707MSR uses one solid sheet of aluminum to make their bottle.If you look at a Sigg bottle where the threads are you will notice two types of metal.So there is more of a possibility of a leak developing when the bottle is pressurized...

yo ive run one of these on veggie oil before, i just had to build a little tiny twig wood fire around it to heat the unit first to flash the oil. ive run cheap rum and vodka as well with a little coaxing and tender... lamp fluid, acetone, rubbing alcohol, yo these will burn anything that can burn.

I have used this stove on my trip around Europe for 3 weeks. Used only unleaded petrol from petrol stations. After roughly 25 uses it clogged so bad that I am unable to remove the wetter wire from the generator tube to clean it. Not that reliable, unless you burn a fancy fuel. Also it is extremely loud (hard to keep a calm conversation), wind has same effect as to gas-powered stoves, and it is very maintenance-intensive. You have to clean the jet every second use, soot everywhere, dirty and smelly hands for each breakfast and lunch, etc. Proper gas bottles are not that hard to find and are actually worth the price.

if you've read the instructions that came with the stove you would have known about the additional maintenance required when burning automotive gasoline. the fact that you did not follow them is your fault, not a fault of the stove. and why did you choose a high-altitude mountaineering stove in the first place when you were out on a sightseeing vacation?
