It’s double edged. She needs to rest her knee. Not compression straps or astrological advice, but rest. Like countless other people who feels the need to hike with a group, she’s going to aggravate her injure just to keep up instead of listening to her body which shouting for her to stop. It’s not a medical mystery. Her keeping up with them is putting her at risk of permanent knee damage.

Wow! Summiting Mt. Washington (not by vehicle of course) is quite an impressive feat. Summiting in the context of a thru-hike at mile 1865.3 in the 101st day of hiking is nothing short of miraculous! So happy for the clear views at the summit, a cathartic moment for sure given what you’ve been through the previous couple of days in the Whites. Hoping for similar views at the top of Katahdin🎉!

Stella, I'm so proud of you! You hiked so fast you hiked right back into winter! J/k! Seriously, the terrain on Mt. Washington looks way different than anything else I've seen on the AT -- that far north you are well above the tree line. I don't think I've ever seen you look this exhilarated - and you have every reason to be. Good job!

What makes me happy is to be in the whites through her videos. Selfie videos bore me but when a hiker is into the hike and what’s in their field of vision it draws me into the experience. Regardless of who travels with who.. it’s the trail that intrigues.

That shot of her walking along the ridge 10:45 was pretty nice for a couple of reasons, just seeing the action of her hiking the ridge, the luxury of watching a longer cut, and seeing it done wordlessly. I'm giving the guy credit here. She has a moment where she says "What beautiful views" then immediately get a discussion and view of her compression sock.

@@lois6705 She must be close - air quality is fine in Maine…and it is unseasonably cool which means fewer bugs….looks like she timed this one perfectly.
@TheJhtlag Жыл бұрын
Just looking at the wind patterns it's quite possible that the winds in Maine are blowing west along with the smoke in Canada so that the Maine may never get that smoke. the smoke will go on a circular pattern down into the US and back out east in the middle Atlantic states, basically a big circle due to a cyclonic pattern. We had a pretty hazy day in Maryland today. There's a cool website but can't post it because YT will delete my post. Windy of course is in the name, figure out the rest! ;^)
@lois6705 Жыл бұрын
@@TheJhtlag The videos are two weeks behind.

@@lois6705I'm suggesting Maine may not get the smoke at all regardless of timing, 'course winds change. I can't post the website, YT seems to delete my post but pretty enteresting site that show wind flows. US looks like it has a mass of stagnant air over it right now, Also shows air quality in places.

Oh, I dunno. There was another through-hiker who suggested tourists shouldn't be allowed up there presumably because they worked for it and the tourists did not. And I'm thinking about some guy who got out of the service carrying a pack he wasn't crazy about, worked at the plant his whole life, has some infirmities and would like to stand on top of a mountain just once. So yeah, there's one mountain that's set aside for that, Mt Washington which already has other concrete stuff going on, eg weather observatory etc. Through-hikers have Katahdin, Franconia Ridge etc. etc. etc. Most of the AT isn't really that wild and oh yeah, AT hikers are "tourists" too, just a very specialized experience tourist.

Such great memories are stirring in my psyche: The USGS marker at the summit of Mt. Washington reads, 6,288.176' above sea level. Thunderstorm Junction, Madison Hut, the seemingly unending and unrelenting downhill slog from the summit of Mt. Madison(the Osgood Trail). Soon after the Osgood Tent Site there is the Auto Road and Pinkham Notch Visitor Center(AMC), then up and over the Wildcats, the Carters and Mt. Moriah, before entering Maine and the Mahoosucs. How I wish I could still do those things, once again. Be well, stay safe. Many are with you...

The path and mountains before and after Washington were more memorable to me. Too many people up there on Washington staring at you like a freak with all your dirty gear on with the same question.. “where did you hike from?..” ”Georgia” “WHAT?!..” “yeah 1700ish miles so far” “SO FAR?!.. where are you trying to get to?” “Middle of Maine” “what possessed you to want to do that?” “I needed a change” “that’s just crazy..good luck..I can’t even walk up the steps here without getting winded..”
