So much has changed since doing Whitney in '79 - especially the permit/camping process. I ditched my hiking boots less than 2 miles up as they felt so heavy and did the rest of the trail in a pair of Nike Cortez gym shoes. We had planned an overnighter but we were all so excited that sleeping was tough with a full moon, ended up waking early around 2am and hit the trail from trail camp around 3am. While it is definitely a mental challenge, I wish I could physically do it now (as a 2 nighter) and take my time to really enjoy the different lakes scenery as it was such a great bucket-list adventure. The more diverse the hiking community becomes the better - well done and another great vid! Impresionante!

Do you think things have changed for the better or the worse? and wow I can't imagine hiking in nike Cortez but that's awesome! Im honestly glad we were able to make it a two day trip, I can't imagine enjoying a 1 day trip as much lol. Thank you for much for watching and supporting the channel.

@@questrunnerchannel - Hard to tell if it is for the worse without having seen it up close personally. But the trail is most definitely A LOT more worn into the mountain now from all of the vids I have seen. IIRC, there wasn't the first camp back then, only trail camp at the base of the switchbacks. There was no scale either (probably a good thing too) - when I got back to SoCal my Dad weighed my pack and it was 42lbs. I would have never attempted it had I known the actual weight, but I did ditch it for the final ascent to the summit at trail camp, and took only an old style steel military canteen up and back. Back then the official height was 14, 494' according to the tshirts we bought in Lone Pine after. Also Lone Pine has grown immensely. The gear back then was medieval compared to now. We only had those big/heavy leather boots with the waffle stomp soles, and the big metal frame backpacks packs weighed a ton empty. Probably why I have never been back - and why after almost 35 years I have the desire again to get back into backpacking again with all of the new tech and lightweight gear to be had. The tech has made it doable and relatively comfortable now compared to before. Now that I think about it, I'm not so sure that I would like to do it again afterall, but definitely love getting back into the life again. Look forward to hopefully seeing you on the trail on my next trip back to the 042. Stay safe!

Another great video! I was privileged to get a permit to Mt Whitney in 2016, for a 1 day treck. Half or our party made it to the summit, while 2 if us made it to the Trail Crest. Its a beautiful hike, treacherous but gorgeous! Ive always said I want to attempt it again, and your video has resparked that fire under my butt! Just might have to do a 2 day treck instead. Congrats on your summit!

Whitney is definitely a tough trail without a doubt. You gotta do it again for sure 🙌 but recommend doing what we did and doing it as an overnight trip, makes it a little more enjoyable 😁 and thank you 🙏 Really appreciate the support and thank you for watching 🙏

The permit has to be printed out? Is it okay just use screenshots from cellphone?
