It took ages, millions of years of a very chaotic and slow process, continents and tectonic plates collided, to push massive portions of land up towards the sky. When you climb a mountain, you're paying tribute, not only to your health, but also, to those millions and millions of years of unfathomable transformation. I love it when at 56:30 he talks about life challenges in a form of a mountain, or lose of a job or breakup; I have had those challenges; could not summit Whitney, still wants to do it after since past December I got injured at work, lost my dad, lost my job, then my mother in that order..there are always challenges; only good thing about then is they make you better and stronger. I think if I get to the next time at Whitney I will get up there and probably will remember this!

Andrew! I also have a heart condition. Aortic Valve Stenosis. I’m missing a heart valve. You are an inspiration. I do hiking and some backpacking. But constantly have to be checking my heart man. I’m taking my 13 year old boy on his first backpacking trip. So excited and somewhat nervous. 😆. Living LIFE despite my condition. We can’t let fear hold us back! Keep walking till we can’t no more.

This Mount Whitney video ranks as one of my favorite AA videos. It seemed like a never ending hike up to the summit. The views area amazing and the mountain snow made this video even better. I have 5 older brothers so of course my dad was the scout master. The first year we camped at Whitney portals my dad just looked at the mountain. The next year dad and my uncle climbed it. 2 days up and 1 down. The year after that , dad and uncle Bruce each brought their boy scout troops. The first picture we have from the summit is dad and the two oldest boys. Then the younger of that pair with the next brother. And so on skipping me and the last with my younger brother. Dads grin got bigger each year. I never got to climb Whitney with my dad. I did help scatter his ashes from mt Coness.

@@AdventureArchives As someone who's climbed more than 1,000 mountain ascents (while aging rapidly now )-: ), to me it seemed you underestimated the value of the summit -- the achievement and the experience. Because you don't fully appreciate that experience until some time passes. I look at the 10,000s of mountain photos and can't help recall how special each of those experiences were ... the people I was with, the way the sky, the forest, the horizon and views, memories of wonderful experiences and relationships long gone now ... all of that are truly unforgettable. Your carefully made video says that perfectly ... while preserving an innocence of the feeling of being relatively new mountain hikers. So again ... nice work. Can't wait to watch more of your work!

On 10/23/2019 I Day hiked Mt. Whitney via Mountaineers Route unprepared with no training and no acclimation. I did summit but this mountain broke me down piece by piece in every way possible. It humbled me down and made me appreciate life even more. Whtney is no joke.

Wow, that's quite an accomplishment! Yeah, we were very prepared ahead of time (or at least I was) after how strenuous the Japan hike was. It's definitely no joke, especially towards the top, but definitely gives you that much needed perspective :) Thanks for watching!

Oh boy at 12:15 when he says lets make it to mile one, reminds me my ascend to just Outpost camp took me around 7 hours; GPS registered I had hiked 7 miles but Outpost camp is only 3.8 miles away from Portal; I could never understand the difference in readings; my ascend was slow as I stopped every 20-50 paces to catch my breath because I am out of shape; averaging 1 mile every 2 hours that is insanely slow! then used to stop more times too for video and pictures; I was really taking my time in no rush to get there but when I finally did and found out I had expended 7 hours to cover 3.8 miles I was really amazed! I saw people going really fast and heavy loaded and was wondering how could they; I was definetely the slower climber that day; even an elderly woman passed me on the way up! but then again the experience and the fun of it it is worth it. This video brings up my itch to go do it again; this time I will plan better to be able to summit!

I have watched several hours of your videos... and have enjoyed very much... My son has similar heart condition and this is first time I have heard you mention this even thought I have seen the scare in previous videos... I am just in awe in what you have been able to accomplish. He is very active in scuba divining now.. I remember when he had to get and ok to go and the doctors said well. we have never had someone with a valve replacement request that before. They gave him the ok to go and it has been very rewarding to see him to be able to do what he loves to do.... Just like your videos.. It is amazing what medical science can do. I have enjoyed your videos and hope you can continue to do what you love to do also.

This. This is what Yosemite was like years ago, just with less people. I grew up camping in Yosemite every year. There were always a lot of people, but you still felt the majesty of everything around you. In the face of all that was there, you feel so insignificant, as if nothing matters anymore. I hadn't been to Yosemite for years, but I remembered your Yosemite video. I finally went back after over a decade and my heart was broken. It wasn't the same Yosemite. It was so crowded, filled with traffic, almost commercialized. I understood what you meant about it being like an amusement park. I no longer felt the same connection to the power of nature I once felt. But seeing this video, seeing mt. Whitney, when you pulled up to the meadow and just looked at the almost photoshopped looking backdrop, I felt that same inspiration, even through a video screen. I just want to thank you guys for sharing your experiences and allowing those of us who can't embark on these journeys to experience them vicariously through you.

Yosemite National Park is still majestic even today. You just have to hike past all the typical tourist trails and you will be fine. We prefer Sequoia National Park as well as Kings Canyon National Park, less people there and just as grand. Have fun on the trails. --JY

i'm the 30% disabled from birth guy who was lucky for UCLA friends who helped him into the low Sierras in the early 1960s. 1 or 2 of them "summited" Whitney including one guy who my bride of 46 years called my brother from another mother. He's still around at age 84 and even a better human being for being a UCLA and JPL physics guy on the Galileo/Jupiter mission. Whitney left it's mark on Bob M. - who's still way too modest ever to admit that he partly "saved the entire mission" after the main photo antenna froze midway in space. He solved the problem and 35-years later, no one's the wiser :) I like to think that too was Mt. Whitney's gift to everyone in humility. Your videos speak for themselves. Thanks so much! Best,

This is by far the best video that I have seen of the climb to Mt. Whitney from Whitney Portal. I myself have been to the summit, but I hiked to the top from the west side while hiking the PCT way back in 2011. The mountains in the west are epic, but my heart is and always will be with the Whites of New Hampshire, my backyard playground back in earlier times. Kudos to all of you for making it to the top. 👍

happened to come across your channel when researching Yosemite trips, i love it! All your thoughts on the trail and after the trip really hook me up with your channel. i think it takes a lot effort to make the video including the editting and background music, they all seems well-planned. Really enjoyed, guys. Thanks. Hiked it with one other friend in 1976. Spent the night in the Smithsonian shelter, woke up at 2AM w/altitude headache and headed down in the moonlight. We were wildland fire fighters acclimating and working at 7000 elev on the El Dorado NF (Iron Mtn. Rd). Loved seeing "sky pilot" (the purple flower) again. Loves growing around 11,000 ft. Thanks again.
