Wonderful tribute to your father.. I enjoyed your video. It reminded me of my climb in the early 90's. Your father's words ring true, smell the pines. Life is short........ smell the pines!

Beautiful video. I've been lucky enough to summit Whitney three times, all from the west side and twice sleeping in the hut. Would go back again in a heartbeat.

Awesome hike. I only got as far as 13,700' before turning back due to clouds and thunder. I was so beat by then that I didn't mind...at the time. Would still love to get to the top. Quite an accomplishment.

Well done!! My Dad is gone now too so I felt everything you had to say about your Dad. My name is also up there from 1971. I don't remember breathing so hard at the top but I was only 22. Again loved the personal video you shared. All the best..

Great video. Great message. Thank you. Did the climb 7 yrs ago, and planning to do it again, possibly this year. Maybe your dad wouldn't have made the trek; but, he would have been proud of you for your effort and success.

No, he is not an unsafe hiker. He hiked at night to avoid the very real risk of lightning strikes, He was on an established non-technical trail with a lot of traffic. This is standard operating procedure in Colorado as well.

Nature is the great escape. Good work, although I don't think you needed to start so early. You miss so much in the dark. I soloed 3 3/4 times. Its not so bad, but I suppose more fun with a friend. Another recommended hike similar to Whitney is Kearsarge Pass in the Onion Valley just farther up the highway from Lone Pine. Lower altitude but equal views.

Were you afraid of bears or any issue with it? I am going to do it solo this June 24th. A little afraid of bears and animal danger. I should be ok with training for hike, but a little concern of animals
@Peakbagging10 жыл бұрын
Nah. You can get a bear canister to hike with, although I didn't feel it was necessary. If you camp anywhere around Portal there are bear lockers to keep you food in. Don't keep anything in cars. Good luck. We are heading back up this Sept. :)

Not unsafe at all if you should prepare and know the trail ahead of time.
@richardblackdog39668 жыл бұрын
Why do you need a permit to walk up a frickin' mountain?? OK, Everest et al is understandable because they're the highest mountains in the world and in a foreign country. I'm from the UK so I don't know if this is the same for other US mountains or not but I've never heard of it.
@Peakbagging8 жыл бұрын
Because it's only a few hours from Los Angeles and there would be a ton of unprepared idiots who think they would like to attempt the challenge of the lower U.S. highest mountain, which would create massive crowds, trash and ruined trails. Not to mention the tax on medical first responders when so many people will be injured or killed.
