Hi looking to buy one for my off grid 4wd trip. Just wondering if need to use in emergency situation is it just the red button you push to send signal?

to activate in an emergency you just push and hold the red button for 2 seconds/the strobe light and red LED starts flashing. Plus there is instructions on the back of the beacon too!

After the GPS self test, neither the red nor green light flashed rapidly. The red light just stopped flashing. What does that mean?

In real life emergency (using red button), does it: a) confirm a message has been received? and/or b) confirm transmission working properly (like in the test) If not . . . is it a good idea to do a test immediately prior to sending a distress message, so you have peace of mind that it is working?

So you can't change the battery? Once the battery dies it's just useless?

Unfortunately customers can't replace the battery themselves. However once the battery passes its expiry date (after 7 years) it can be sent in for a battery replacement and refurbishment.

@@GMEaus when rechargeable batteries become a thing in these I'll deff get one. Hell I'll probably pick one up before my next trip. But rechargeable would add so much value it can sit in people's gear stash always ready to go. Or even a little pull tab that activates the battery so it can sit unactivated in its packaging ready and waiting.

I thinking of buying a beacon pre owned where is the expiration battery date printed on the beacon? Cheers Matt

@@mattbright8635 Not normally printed on the beacon but the beacon should have been registered and the registration will tell you when it expires. If you cannot find any of this information I wouldn't but it.

I still think a sat phone is a better option in a emergency ,as i my 4wd broke down 2 years ago and a tow was organised with in a few hours.

Hi Andrew, a sat phone is a great option for an incident like that. A PLB is dedicated emergency beacon that is suited to situations where making a call may not be an option.

Depends entirely on the emergency. A 4WD breaking down isn't really an emergency. If someone in your party falls and breaks their head open, or your boat sinks in the Atlantic, a PLB will be handy.
