To finish the three base orders for the R211 cars from Kawasaki, Staten Island's R211S cars have officially debuted in revenue service as of October 8th. These cars are set to replace the entire remainder fleet of the St. Louis Car Company R44's, the last cars built by St. Louis and the last fleet from St. Louis still in revenue service under the MTA. The R211S cars are notable for being Staten Island's first order of new passenger cars since the R44 order, drastically upgrading the system's technology back up to modern standards in over 50 years. The R211S cars are nearly identical to the R211A subway cars, with the only very few notable differences being sensors underneath the couplers, which are for their in cab signaling systems, since R211S cars cannot utilize CBTC due to the different signaling system on the SIR. They also show a different logo on the FIND screens when a program is not shown, which shows the MTA logo followed by "Staten Island Railway", versus "New York City Transit" on the subway cars. The R211S railcars do not pass the regulations to be noted by the FRA as railroad-prepared EMU cars, whereas the R44 cars, despite having waivers for select missing features, were built to accommodate the FRA's guidelines, similar to that of an M1 or M3 EMU car. This change makes for the SIR to resemble more that of the subway, rather than a railroad. Despite this, however, due the SIR's specifications being so mixed, the proper designations even prior to the debut is "Railway". With the debut of the R211S, this officially marks the final fleet of an R211 variation to enter passenger service, completing all three introductions to the systems. #mtasubway #statenisland
