I sat in the third row center for this production, and left the theatre in awe of what I'd just witnessed. "Timotheé Chalamet is a revelation," I wrote online that night. "I feel like I'll be telling my friends' grandchildren about him." I'm so grateful to have witnessed Timotheé so early in his career, and in such an exquisite play by John Patrick Shanley! Still not giving up hope the full play will be released on video at some point, but this event is certainly the next best thing!

When I came home from seeing this production (JPS is one of my favorite contemporary playwrights and I was a longtime subscriber to MTC) I couldn't stop talking about PRODIGAL SON and Chalamet's bravura, astonishing performance . I immediately got tickets to see it again, and took my grandson who was visiting from San Francisco. I wanted him to see such an extraordinary tour de force by a young man his own age. After Chalamet became film famous I periodically Tweeted to him to NOT FORGET THE STAGE! As wonderful as he is in celluloid, he is electrifying on the stage in the right role, of course. Thank you John Patrick Shanley for trusting your early life to the more than capable hands of Timotheé Chalamet. (BTW, Chalamet was to return to the stage - in London - in an intimate play that I'd seen in NYC a few years ago. Sadly, COVID hit and the play was canceled. A final aside, after seeing PRODIGAL SON, I did an Internet search and discovered he was "Finn" in the series "Homeland." He also can be quite the singer. Am hoping someone writes him a Broadway musical (check out SNL appearances, and his SWEET CHARITY clips on KZbin when he was at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts.)

Yes, you are right. And I don't say that lightly. My discovery and introduction to "Timmy" has been hit and miss and quite irregular. I initially just stumbled onto him surfing the internet and then went from from very recent production to another one. But had never seen his early work - like this play. From the more recent performances I knew he was excellent but had no idea he was THIS intelligent and talented. Boy was he a power-house even at this age. I must honestly concede that he really is the best of his generation. Dynamic and expressive to the hilt.

11:58 fav part because its not played as a girl but its just the choice and HOW he does it that brings comedy without minimizing others, just the character HIS character is trying to portray. He really does theatre acting BUT there's so much expression behind every little action that you can see he is NOT the character, the character is him. I can see how being someone, like a scout, in the audience can be hooked by the acting and into his capability for screen where those small gestures he still does, despite it being a play (where small you wont nessicarily see from afar) would be stand outs. 12:29 OMG I totally get that feeling: you're tired of being angry or yelling to make a point over someone yelling and angry who isnt and wont see your pain, so you cave into your real feeling: sadness. In speech alone, I've seen this clip, but without context, you don't get HOW powerful it is. His actions and choices are that he's (character) is saying he HAS good points but, just because he's not "an adult" or owns the school (like when your parents say " because I say so/pay for the roof over your head, that's why", ...he shouldn't be listened to??? Age is the reason to ignore or for lessons of ignorance when the lesson is staring you in the face?? You really side with the student; its a great point in the play to go from not sure of having an opinion of the character to totally siding with the character, all because he was vulnerable and not just speaking vulnerable words. THe choice to play is sad and annoyed and given up, not just goofy. In real life, the laugh moment would simply be a part that breaks your heart. Not that anyone cares but I once read a line that got laughs and I didn't understand why. Its important for actors to stay in character no matter how the auidence that night takes the line because the next audience can react differently. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL ENDING! My God! (or not, I'm not forcing beliefs) is the writing GREAT! SO grateful this experience lead to this writing in this writer! Performance of "thanks" was great as well but great writing makes great characters for people to pull from AND story to pull from. I just love the message he taught the teacher! I love plays. More should have powerful messages like this. Spectacle is great ( musicals and costume) but the power is in the walk away, when people discuss the story that stays with them forever, long after they saw the play, even just 1 time. OH! & that pencil! I always say how a failed writer I am when I realize I don't have a writing tool on my person, so that writing tool...is everything! Great job to the WHOLE team: director, actors, and of course the writer!!!
