If anyone has ever done stage / theater performances, understand how much more talent you have than say "being in the movies". There is no "retake" in theater. This was fantastic and he's quite good with projecting his voice. It has to be hard to keep your voice level when moving around. I'm so glad I stumbled on this video. Of course we are locked down...🙄
@danaliu3295
@danaliu3295 3 жыл бұрын
Acting on camera is significantly harder. Because the camera catches EVERYTHING . Every thought, every eye movement, every "eye talk" and every abnormality and there is also no rehearsal. On a stage play you practice with your costars for at least a month if not half a year. And it runs for several nights so you can improve it as you go along and if you weren't completely in character on one night you can tell yourself you'll do better the next night. Not to mention that if you haven't gotten the emotions perfect that day you can very easily fake it through your voice and gestures. Voice is especially important when conveying emotion on stage. Where as voice is very unimportant on camera. For on camera acting you do all the preparation at home by yourself and your coworkers interpretations and choices are all a surprise until the day on set. Script changes happen so frequently that actors are asked to memorize new scenes and monologues the day of! Plays are also tested and run over and over again before it is even put on stage so you know the script is good to go. On camera, if things don't work whether it's lines or directions you have to improvise in the moment. Everything is tested for the first time on set. Not to mention that there is no continuity of the story on set. Scenes are shot completely out of order and you're expected to jump in to the story of the scene right away. And shooting the same scene over and over again(sometimes 70 to a 100 times) it can be very taxing and mind numbing if you don't understand or have a good grasp of how to get into it. Plus often times you're not playing off of a partner but rather some tape on the side of the camera. All in all, film acting is definitely harder. There are simply more technicalities.
@AbcDef-ww2gy
@AbcDef-ww2gy 3 жыл бұрын
@@danaliu3295 Yes, good explanation, except it's not entirely true that "everything is tested for the first time on set". There are usually "table reads" before shooting.
@danaliu3295
@danaliu3295 3 жыл бұрын
@@AbcDef-ww2gy lol table reads doesn't actually say that much about whether a scene fits well into a movie. And actors interpretations will often change by the time you get on set especially if there are script changes. Film scripts are also generally more fluid with improv on set, directors often ask for multiple interpretations so they can get different shots. Before a play is put on officially they'll actually run it with other actors, small productions ect and then after actors are hired they'll reherse it over and over again before opening night. Movie scenes are kinda shot with more variety and the editing process finalizes it. What makes it in the final movie can be very different from the script.
@AbcDef-ww2gy
@AbcDef-ww2gy 3 жыл бұрын
@@danaliu3295 Some directors, e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, hate it when actors do improv or come up with their own script changes, but yes, most allow it. One such example is the proposal scene in Greta Gerwig's Little Women script, pp 96-98. variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/little-women-by-greta-gerwig.pdf Laurie says "I love you, Jo" twice while she is putting herself down and calling herself homely, but those lines aren't in the script.
@danaliu3295
@danaliu3295 3 жыл бұрын
@@AbcDef-ww2gy depends on the director but most allow it and many even ask for it. But I'm not really talking about improv alone but also the general changes that occur on set :)

You should actually go to a live stage production sometime.

I'm just in awe. Theatre stage acting is so stressful. You HAVE to memorize your lines. It's one take. You have to be animated and know how to project your voice so the back row can hear you. You feed off the audience and yet have to not respond to them. You don't get multiple takes. No one is going to edit your mistakes. There's no blooper reel. It's incredibly live. Some of the best movie actors started on stage. Very happy for Timothee, but wonder where the Charity character went?

Obvi no one is denying Timmy’s acting and comedic timing-fantastic. But you can see how much better-suited he is for film, while she shines in the theater. He talks in the back of his throat, fine for film but when you’re in an auditorium full of bodies that deaden sound, this makes it harder to understand what you’re saying, despite amplification and excellent diction. But this girl’s forward placement speaking is just fantastic. (It feels unnatural to do so kudos to her.) Her singing is phenom, great technique, forward placement but not nasally. I’m sure her dancing is spot-on, too. If her dream is Broadway, I so hope she gets there!! She def has the potential!
@sammysoppy3361
@sammysoppy3361 4 жыл бұрын
Heather Alfano I agree. Better for film, or regular plays. I mean he kills here imo, but musical theater is its own entity. Timmy is an incredibly naturalistic actor, and this is not a slight against theater actors, musical theater actors are mad talented, but they have to project so much. Perform to the back of the room. Everything is a bit exaggerated. Bigger. Not the best fit with an actor who thrives in naturalism and subtlety. But I think he did a kick ass job of being over the top funny here...i am really impressed with his comedic skills/timing, which is not easy. A lot of serious actors don’t excel at comedy and vice versa. He’s just sort of naturally funny. I hope he does more plays in the future, but I don’t need him to be the next song and dance man (unless it’s a super cool film musical lol)

I'm pretty surprised that people are saying that he's not a singer. I can agree that she has more talent for it, but you don't have to be an extremely talented vocalist to be considered a singer? What he did was more than carrying a tune, he can belt and emote while singing, wasn't off key at any point unless it was intentional, and he had a nice tone. He excels at acting and his comedic timing is wonderful, but that doesn't mean he's not a singer ;)

@@TheGleeksrock Hollywood has intensive training that has worked miracles. He has the focus to do it, but it depends on how his body responds to the training. Of course, I hope they don't give him steroids. The sequel to CMBYN takes place in NYC during the 80s. Developing your body in a gym was very popular then. Maybe he will bulk-up for the sequel, but I think the writers are aiming for him to be a music major, not a body builder. Maybe he'll do both.

@@linnaeusshecut3959 no it doesn't? lol the first book is set in the 80's. i believe "find me" is set like 25 years later and it's also set mostly in italy except for oliver's chapter which actually IS set in NY but its a very brief chapter that tells a story that happens in only one night. maybe if the sequel ends up getting made, part of oliver's story would be filmed in new hampshire since that's where he says his permanent home is.

It's a performing arts high school, so not terribly surprising to see two really good performers. And Caitlin seems to be doing all right as an actress. Great scene. Like to see him in a musical comedy, maybe on Broadway.
