Here is a quick video of the hours spent trying to remove the black coating from my MTech Trailmaster knife , ( MT-151 ),to make it look more like the Cold Steel Trailmaster.
My ultimate goal was to try and remove the coating on the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider ( but wanted to practice on a much cheaper blade ).’
I have not made up my mind on that just yet .
We shall see ,.....
Overall I know this could of been a little bit better , but I am still pretty proud of the outcome .
Was very therapeutic for me haha .
Stay safe as always Everyone 🤠

I see this is an old video, but I just finished my 151 and thought I'd share what I did different. I polished my guard, but only the blade side and edge. Under the coating the guard has those same ridges. So I wrapped 100 grit paper over a putty knife and sanded it until the ridges were gone. Then is worked my way down to 1500 grit. Then I used mag wheel polish to shine it up. I taped it off to start working the blade. I have a bench sander, so that helped alot. Once the lines were gone I sanded down to 325. At that point I went a different route than you. I used 325 grit mesh sanding disc on a 6 inch random orbital sander. The end result looks like a stone wash finish. I was suprised how smooth the finished product was. Thanks for showing us your process. Watching your video gave me the nertz to try it myself. Lol I love that cheap knife now

That sounds so awesome!!! Thanks for letting me ( us ) know . I know that mine would of been so much better had I used real tools …. But I just used my only God Given instruments ( my hands ) . I remember doing this . Every tine someone asks me about it my hands and right arm start to hurt again haha 😂 Hurts So Good though as I am still very proud of the turnout . ( I did other coating removals after this that when you get a chance check out ). Happy New Year 🎆

Thank you so much. Now still trying to decide if I want to do the same thing to the Ontario SP-10 . ( now that I know what it entails ). Maybe next year ???? I’d like to have a back up just in case . I know that there is a reason for the black coating . It serves a purpose . But I’m not too worried about my knife reflecting off the sun while hiding in a jungle . 1- that is what the sheath is for haha . And 2- I want my would be attackers to be aware that I’m carrying something long sharp and pointy haha . Anyway ...,,, haha haha I might try it again . We shall see . Thanks again for being here . Stay well 🤠

I heard it’s a hard knife to find now . I don’t get it : MTech has like 4 or 5 really awesome blades , and they are like impossible to locate . I say forget all the other MTech designs, and focus more on those particular 4 or 5 . Their sales would skyrocket!!! I’m going to do a video soon of the ones I’m talking about . Stay tuned ...... PS - I really don’t like doing videos on knives that are not really available. But they are good to have just in case someone finds one on eBay or something , they can come over to my Channel and click on a video for reference. Know what I mean ? Thanks for watching 🤠

It was an easy decision with the MTech ( they are rather cheap and ready available). But if I screw up the SP-10 , that’s a horse of a different color ( no pun intended) haha . Not so cheap and Not so available. Hmmmmmmmmm..... Stayyyyyyy Tuned ...... And Stayyyyyy Safe as Always 🤠

To toss something new into the mix I just bought and received the lowest end and cheapest at $ 9.99 Mora knife made. When I used to get wet a lot, if it wasn't a Mora, it was a Nimrod that I went under with. I don't know why I waited so long to get a new Mora, but it comes out of the box shave sharp, and if you only use it to open mail get one

I would want my attackers to be aware that I’m carrying haha haha . Seriously... For what I paid for ( MTech 151 ), it’s ok that I did this . I could always get another . ( even though the price did increase from Like $25 to $45 ). I knew that would happen sooner or later . And so did you !!! People don’t listen !!! Anyway -- Now I wanted to do this same thing with the Ontario SP-10 . Still undecided. THAT one isn’t cheap . And NOT Always ready available. ( I’d like a back up just in case ). Hmmmmmmmm..... I told Donnie about these ridiculously big Bowies on BudK , I know the site is hit or miss but look for the Giant Killer Bowie , Joe Doomsday said his was like 5lbs lol and almost 1/2" thick . Yeah that reflection is becaus 1 is stainless and 1 is high carbon , but my Spyderco Resilience in 8CR13MOV gave me a mirror polish with 3000 grit sandpaper but my 511 with S30VN didnt with the same paper , weird hey ? I started at 600 grit and went up 50 grit per round till 3000 grit, I also use Windex or any glass cleaner for lubricant and it dries quick so no streaking or rusting either .

The big question is : Do I want to try this on the Ontario SP-10 Marine Raider ???? Hmmmmmm...... would hate to screw that one up haha . But we shall see . Hope all is well on your end . I’m so glad we are finally in October! Sept was indeed a challenging month . Just recovering now ( still a few things that are working themselves out ). Like my dog Ralph . He was in sooooo much pain ! Close call ! The entire family got together and we opted for the surgery ( he had Prostatic Abscesses). He was in the ER for a few days . Got him home yesterday. He is coming around slowly but surely . Overall I think he is doing very well . Just so damn hard trying to give him his meds . Only one is liquid form . The others are pill form . Even when I put the pill inside a treat that he likes , you see him chewing , then swallows , and THEN spits out the pill ! I don’t know how the hell he does it ! “ Chew - Chew - Chew .,.... Lick 👅 Lick 👅- Swallow ...... them Boink !! Out goes the pill “!!! He is like the Criss Angel of dogs 🐶 haha . But other than that , he is just recovering and will have his stitches removed in 10 more days . Keep the little fella in your prayers . Thanks so much 🤠🙏❤️🐶

Cowboy C Bop yea idk if I’d want to try it in the Ontario personally but I know you’d do a good job! And poor guy is the the smaller dog or a bigger dog? Of course I’ll keep him in my prayers. They need affordable health care for our fur babies! My coworker had to pay over 5,000 for her dog. She had cancer in her left shoulder had to have her leg amputated. Worth it but not cheap by any means! I hope October is a better month for you. This shit show 2020 is almost over! Take care! ❤️🙏🤠

Becky Stiles It’s the smaller dog , Ralph . He is 12 . He seems so good now . Getting back to his comical self . Follows me everywhere. He loves going for rides but he is still in recovery . He was mad quite a few times yesterday when I left without him . Haha haha . It’s so expensive!! Thank God for the family all chipping in . The bill and procedure was over expensive . Fucking Vets ! It’s like if you can’t afford the surgery , they suggest putting them down . How humane is that ?!?!?! “ Oh you can’t afford it ????? Too bad .... We will just put him down then “. Or .... “ Ok .... It’s going to be 6 Grand . You got it ??? Awesome ! He will be as good as new “!!! It’s terrible . These vets only care ( really care ) about one thing . That evil $$ !! So we made sure the doctors beach home is taken care of for a few months . Basterds I tell ya ! And No ! They Do Not Except Payment Plans !! We were expecting something like this with Ralph , cause of his age . But I really felt so bad for those people with younger dogs , who were hit by cars . Yeah ! When I was outside of the hospital waiting , at least 3 dogs had come into to the ER because they were hit by cars . What is going on ???? And that was just one day , a few hours , while I was there ! They probably see 50 cases per week . I couldn’t do that job . If I had the tools to fix someone’s pet , I’m going to fix them . Not wait until they pay ! We can always work something out . And if they don’t pay ???? Well let’s just say they could never return to my vet hospital . That’s a gamble no one should take . ( I’m venting ...... sorry )

You can see your reflection because its cheaper steel , san mai is a process an has the hard steel hagane forming the blade's edge, and the iron/stainless forming a jacket on both sides. , so no, you wont see your reflection in the san mai. San Mai is obviously a much better steel than 440 on the MTech, however it is not guaranteed to be exactly the AISI 440 series steels.

Do you see any difference in ability as far as- strength- cutting- weight ,sharpness or feel that the more expensive trailmaster provides over the mtech ? or are they match equal in effectiveness ? Can you do a VS match ?
@jonathandiamond6801

Mtech is Chinese GARBAGE. The quality between that and cold steel is dramatic. Sure mtech can take edge. But it won't keep it under hard use like the cold steel. If you have san mai trailmaster it's a beast. It's nearly razor sharp and will hold up to most nearly anything. It does have a tendency to chip at the edge if you abuse it. If you stick with wood and flesh the edge holds up fine. I'd say stop being cheap and just buy the cold steel. No one ever regrets buying a trailmaster. Heck I own 2 going on 3. I also have a laredo bowie in cpm3v. Forget the cheap knives and just buy knives of quality. Cold steel lasts a lifetime of hard use if taken care of properly.

Hardly worth it. At $300+ Not for a blade with the same cheap rubber handle that's found on their $40 SRK. The San Mai blade is high quality but the handle material doesn't match it and the price point.

Really enjoyed this video! The knives just have really nice shape and size to them very appealing. Shame the CS is £300 plus over here, and the Mtech isn’t for sale over here. I was wondering, we have spoken a lot about Rambo and Crocodile Dundee Knives. But what about other movie knives, like one Arnold had? I’m really wanting one that Clint Eastwood used and John Wayne too. Not much info is out there though (from what I have seen?)

kylethedalek Hi ... I’m a little busy at the moment so I can’t really answer your questions . But if you want , check out my video of “ Stallone and Schwarzenegger Final Predator “ show . Haha . It was a joke conversation if they were to make a final Predator movie . ( did about a year ago ). Enjoy and I’ll get back to you when things calm here on the home front .

Cowboy C Bop no worries man, I’ve been watching a few of your older videos, I searched for the one you were taking about and ended watching others haha. And I’ve tried looking for info on knives used in westerns, but not much on Eastwood and Wayne’s. And I’m from the U.K. or Scotland to be a bit more specific, unfortunately.

kylethedalek I have Always wanted to visit all of them ! Since childhood!!! My US Navy enlistment took me everywhere else ( Australia, Hong Kong , Japan , Philippines, Bali , Guam , Diego Garcia .....) , but never The UK or Scotland . Now when I departed the Navy , during the Gulf war crisis back in 91 , I flew to Ireland . Our plane was having problems . After spending 6 long hours at the airport, they decided to put us all up in a hotel . As soon as we checked in , I went to my room , the phone rings . They said “ report to the lobby with your bags . The plane is ready “. Are you kidding me ??????????’ Hey ! I was in a rush to get home but I always wanted to see Ireland 🇮🇪. So I was pretty happy about being stranded there for a night . Nope ! Off we went haha . Anyway.... just thought I’d share that . I’m on my 3 rd cup of coffee haha . Nice! Is the Mtech full tang?
@tubes5150
@tubes5150 3 жыл бұрын
So sorry for the delay. Yes !! The tang is full . The handle wraps around the tang . I’m the lanyard hole , you can peek in and see the tang . Very Cool Blade !! About a year ago I paid like $25 total . Now ( On Amazon ) the price almost doubled . I predicted that a year ago . Still a pretty awesome price for this blade . Some say it is just as good as the CS . ( I would not go that far but it’s nice to know that some folks feel that way ). Stay safe as always my friend 🤠

Why did you remove the coating? Isnt it better with it?
@tubes5150
@tubes5150 3 жыл бұрын
Well ?? The coating does serve a purpose. But I’m not too worried about an attacker seeing my knife reflecting off the sun haha . ( that’s another reason for a sheath - to conceal ). But I would want any possible attacker to see the long shiny blade . I know I would think twice haha . But this was just an experiment. A lot of folks out there prefer shiny over dark coated blades . So if they want to remove the coating , here it is . Me personally?? I like my blades to shine . Hope this helps . Stay safe as always and Thanks for watching 🤠

CLASSIFIED AGENT I didn’t try that using the MTech . I know some work rather well ( for striking ), while others do not . I just make sure I always have my striker with me .

Well hey there young man. This is Lou again. I was just wondering if you have been able to do a work order, maybe a bill of material and cost of labor on this project for this knife. I'm just needing to see what the damage is so I can get it together and get it out to you. Thanks buddy.

@@tubes5150 Hello young man. My most sincere apologies to you. I feel bad about pestering you then dropping off the scene like I did but there has been a lot of people sick around here. Its almost embarrassing to tell you this but somehow my daughter n law and my wife found out about the knife. I get blood thinners from the VA and they seem to think I'm gonna cut my arm or leg off and bleed out. I mean I fought in a war, field dressed more deer than I can count. Owned and maintained numerous weapons in my lifetime and now I have to get permission from two women before I can get a knife. What is this world coming to? If I owe you anything for your troubles, let me know how much and I will get it to you somehow. But I guess the project is a no-go right now. If I'm gonna remain a resident inside the house instead of the dogs house anyway. Thank you young man and I'm just now learning how to use these digital computers so look over my bad spelling. I did tell them I might not be able to own that knife but they can't stop me from watching your videos about knives though. Unless they turn the digital computer off. Because I don't think I know how to cut it back on. But I'm learning quick. Good day young man and thanks again for your time.

@@artislouallen1625 My Brother !!! Boy do WE have a Lot in Common!! Back in May , I was in a ton of pain for 4 days straight . I thought I had tore a muscle in my chest by lifting a package to be put in the back of my pickup truck .( it was a bit on the heavy side ). Anyway - that pain left me to the point of zero sleep . Every time I took a breath , especially at night , it was like someone was stabbing me with a burning 🔥 sword !! It hurt ! My wife rushed me to the ER around 4:30 am . ( she normally works night shift until 7:39 am , but she had a bad feeling and decided to leave at 4 am -- she found me outside the house , in the back yard , collapsed in a chair . She thought I was dead ! I was conscious though . All I wanted was sleep but could not get vertical . It was terrible !!! So I get to the ER and they ran tests . Turns out I have 2 Blood Clots on my lungs , and one in my right leg . I’m officially on blood thinners !!!! ELIQUIS. Scary times !! They still don’t know what caused them . Could be the vaccine but not sure . So as you know , one of the rules is “ don’t cut yourself “!!!! My wife told the doctor that I have a knife channel and I do reviews . The doctors face was priceless!!! So no more demonstrations for now . I’m taking it slow . I might do a little chopping here and there and cut some paper - but that’s it . I know what you mean by everyone being sick too - I am also sick right now and the timing really sucks!! I have a constant runny nose and sore throat . I’m dealing with it but it also breaks my heart ! My daughter gave birth yesterday to our 2nd grandchild, and I can’t be there to see or hold him . ( don’t want anyone else catching my cold ). It’s a bittersweet day that’s for sure . I gotta be very careful !!! I’m also a veteran ( served USN during Gulf War from 87 to 91 on the USS San Jose AFS-7 - home port GUAM ). I’m service connected and normally go thru the VA for most of my health issues . But not the blood clot !! I’m letting the local specialists take care of that situation. They say my levels look good and they “ think “ I should be off the blood thinners by Christmas 2021 . ( now at first I was excited to hear that news , now I’m going to be paranoid without them ). Does that make any sense to you ??? Cause now , at least I know that the medication is working . I’m afraid of another clot forming and I won’t be on the blood thinners . Every new pain I find I will be at the ER again !!! Hahaha Crazy but true !! No worries on the coating removal . Im thinking about removing the coating on my BKR 9 ……. Just got to make sure I tape up the edge !!! Very Important!!! I do a lot of sanding and get carried away …… we shall see .’. Reach out anytime brother and I hope you feel better ( as I ). I can’t wait to meet my grandson 🤠🙏❤️
