RG Tron is more Ramp than Aggro, the difference being that a aggro deck focuses on playing cost-effective threats as soon as possible and in general attacks your life points as a primary objective before you have enough board state to control them while a ramp deck spends the early game growing his mana pool by various means and then proceeds to play something almost impossible to answer like Emrakul or some other giant thing. This kind of ramp usually predates on control decks because they have enough time to execute their strategy, but they are weak to aggro which can race them in the early game, when they have few ways to interact.

Possibly your best video yet good sir. Very enjoyable to watch with plenty of technical advice thrown in. I would like to see a Red Deck Wins/Mono Red Aggro video. I have a decent one built, but I'm short on finances for major cards like the Goblin Rabblemaster. The topic of upgrading a budget deck would be awesome. Should I run the maximum of 8 fetchlands to thin my draws out? Or is it more important to invest in 3 more Stoke The Flames and a few Rabblemasters?
@TheFeatureFinder9 жыл бұрын
Should have included this: I play Standard.
@techmage45679 жыл бұрын
Mono red aggro doesn't need fetches since your mana curve centers at 1 or 2 making the excess land redundant
@TheFeatureFinder9 жыл бұрын
Techmage 45 My reasoning for the fetches is thus: if I eliminate eight basic land cards and replace them with fetches, I can really thin out my deck. It essentially lets me run a 52 card deck and increases my chances of pulling a spell versus another mountain that I don't need. Is this logic flawed? Sounded really good when the fella I met the other day at my LGS explained it. (No he wasn't just trying to sell me fetches lol.)
@techmage45679 жыл бұрын
the logic is flawed since if you think about it you are replacing mountains with cards that let you get a mountain the point is that you are still drawing a land but I suppose that you have to have 1/3 of your deck land (about) but it doesnt increase your chance of drawing a spell since you have the same number of land in your deck
@alexandercastleberry4809 жыл бұрын
Rock Star Vapes Even running 8 fetches, if you play a game to turn 8, which is hella late, you would only see two fetches in those 15 cards. That means you are thinning a 53 card deck to 52 at the worst and a 45 card deck to 43 at the best. This increases your odds of drawing a non land card by approx 1.9% - 2.3%. That basically translates to: Over the course of 100 games where it came down to wire and one card was the difference between winning and losing, running an additional $120 - $160 [at the moment] worth of cards will win you about 2 games if deck thinning is the factor. They have a few more solid functions, deck thinning is a very minor bonus attribute. If a card you don't want is on top of your library, it happens in blue often, you can use the fetch for a shuffle. Or, if a card you want was put on the bottom of your library, the shuffle will move it up. Also handy if you really just feel like you need a good shuffle. Mana fixing in an awesome way. They don't just grab basic lands, they grab lands that have that have plains, swamp, island, forest, mountain in the land type so shocks and other useful lands can be sought out with them. It does hurt to pay 3 turn one but it can be worth it get the shock you need out and running. Basically, if you are a Pro-Tour ultra competitive player who does this to pay your bills, you want fetches. you want anything that could possibly give you that slight advantage over your opponent. If you just play at your LGS or with friends and family then fetches are nice but not necessary. If you are looking for a way to inflate the cost of a deck so yours is more expensive than a buddies then fetches are the perfect choice.

When I played tron, I played a super agressive, shaved down version in mono green. I tried running karns and ugins, but found they didn't have nearly as immediate an effect as just a simple large creature. After the release of battle for zendikar, I dropped emrakul, ugin, and karn in favor of ulamog and later adding reality smasher and eldrazi temples. The deck was also a whole lot easier to pilot than your (equally awesome) r/g variant.
@ethanlewis22187 жыл бұрын
would love to see an update of this video since the deck dropped emrakul, eye of ugin was banned, ugin became an undisputed mainstay, and the deck switched to green white for the superior sideboard. this is one modern deck in serious need of an updated video. Tom Ross's first place at SCG Columbus as well as other recent surges in tron tournament results proves the deck has just as much tier 1 cred as ever and makes it a perfect time for an update. just a suggestion, keep making great videos!

GW was mostly a kneejerk reaction to Dredge which just got banned into tier 2 or below, Sudden Shock is infinitely better vs UR Fiend, Affinity and Infect than Path or Blessed Alliance and Pyroclasm is just better vs everything from fish to burn to hatebears. Tiers represent meta shares, not power level. Otherwise yeah could use an update.

Very good video. You said "RG doesn't want to run karn" at about 2 mins, I think you meant "mono U doesn't want to run karn" other than that it was fantastic. I'd love to see a followup rebuttal with Johnny coming back with a UG tron list with karn ugin emrakul and fat daddy stacks of mana to show that tier 2 brewing of decks is absolutely viable, and sometimes you just want to have fun 75% of the games you do get to do fun things in, and it's ok if it is way worse and loses 25% of the time. Fun fact, turn 2 explore means turn 3 ugin!
@eila20889 жыл бұрын
If you can go off in 75% of the games that should be a Tier 1 deck; the ratio is much lower and I rather play a deck that actually can win if you are spending almost a thousand dollars.

This seemed like a good spot to leave a comment. Real simple question, when karn restarts the game does everything on the board go back into the deck except for what was exiled with karns effects? I've seen instances where everything is shuffled back in the library and other instances where everything but what is on the board is. I'm not sure which is right. The way I read a restart is that everything would but aforementioned effects.

While I'm running Karn in my u tron deck, I think there is a strong argument I should just replace him with another Ugin. While Karn is perfect for turn 3 tron, Ugin is perfect for u tron as turn 5 tron with the 3 tron lands and an island is not uncommon, and panic board wipe button is quite nice is a deck that has to claw for survival until tron is online. I think the strongest argument to why not Karn is "why not Ugin instead?"

I've also got a tech for a 4-color Burn, and it's pretty sweet. it can hypothetically win by turn 3, which is terrifying. - Creatures- x4 Goblin guide x4 Monastery Swiftspear x4 Eidilon of the Great Revel - Burn- x4 Lightning Bolt x4 Lava Spike x4 Bump in the Night x4 Rift Bolt x4 Collateral Damage (i find this to be more useful than Shard Volley. the way i see it, creatures are expendable. Lands are not.) x4 Boros Charm x3 Lightning Helix x2 Skullcrack x2 Shard Volley - Land- x8 Mountain x4 Bloodstained Mire x2 Wooded Foothills x1 Sacred Foundry x1 Stomping Ground x1 Blood Crypt - Sideboard- x4 Destructive Revelry (a naturalize with a shock stapled on.) x1 Grim Lavamancer x1 Anger of the Gods x2 Skullcrack x2 pyroclasm x1 Browbeat (i personally think this card is hilarious. nobody uses it so nobody knows how to react to seeing it.) x1 Slaughter Games x3 Dragon Claw
@CrimsonFox369 жыл бұрын
yes, but Destructive revelry targets enchantments. it's a naturalize with a shock stapled to it. what would you do if an opponent played Leyline of sanctity on turn 0?

JakesFavorites I see what you are saying, and i understand where you are coming from. but i have yet to thoroughly test this deck. the main reason i dont use Sexing Devil is because he is never what i need him to be. he's not fast enough, and more often than not he dies before i can get any use out of him. i can run some experiments, but i doubt he will be very useful. as for the Blood Moon, i have enough red spells to push me through and i'll just side out my off colors.
@CrimsonFox369 жыл бұрын
JakesFavorites I got back from FNM last night, and let me tell you, Sexing Devil was the worst card in my deck. Burn is making a comeback (at least at my store) so everyone knows how to deal with him. Let him live, then bolt/path him. the only thing i could do was sack him for collateral. the best plays i made were volleying my stomping ground targeted with spreading seas, and my signature 3-turn-kill. My deck isnt necessarily four colours, it's more "Mardu splash green".

JakesFavorites I'm not saying that he has to right out copy them or try to be a pro-player, but he clearly has no idea and asked for advice, his deck has way too few creatures, too many 2x and cards that do nothing for him like Ordeal of Nylea or jeskai elder. There is no fun in playing with a deck that doesn't work and, in a game as big as magic, seeing what others are doing and understanding why is an excellent way to get an idea of what you can do. That also helps in knowing what cards are considered good so he doesn't get ripped off in trades! (and believe me, you will always find at least one person who predates on new players, even in the best communities)
@nebulousone9 жыл бұрын
Wow. Way to be friendly and helpful to a new player, guys. jenaro mendoza It completely depends on what you want to do with the deck. If you're playing with friends at home with some intro-pack level decks, then this is perfectly fine. Play games, see what works and what doesn't, try out new things and have fun! (In all likelihood, you'll want to remove the counterspells, because they don't fit your game plan well, and add in some more creature threats.) If your goal is to play at Friday Night Magic or a local gameshop, then just be aware that the deck is probably not going to be competitive and be ready to lose some games. If you're okay with that, go ahead and play it anyway. You'll meet new people, see new decks, get better at the game, and learn what you like to play. If you want to stand a better chance, I would visit Tappedout.com and look at some of the budget standard brews. Tinker with one of those and bring it to start off. There's no need to sink 100s of dollars into a top level competitive deck right away, so don't bother looking at pro decks unless you want to. Tappedout is a pretty friendly, creative community, and I think it's a great place to start. Lastly, don't be put off by people like JakesFavorites who clearly had a not so great experience playing standard at the their LGS. Standard is a good place to start if your local gameshop is friendly (although JakesFavorites makes a valid point about being careful with trades -- I'd avoid trading at first, since some people are asses). Standard has all the disadvantages Jake mentions, but if the community is fun and you're not too concerned about having the top deck and cards, then it can still be a lot of fun. (Thanks Tolarian Community College for a great video!)

JakesFavorites Frankly, tournament Magic at any level is about competition and having the most money to spend, though obviously with Modern, Legacy, etc. at least the cards don't rotate. I'm not a big fan of the Standard format, but unfortunately, due to the cycle of WoTC and most local game stores pushing Standard and players feeling that they have to play Standard to get much tournament experience, it's much more prevalent than the other formats. That said, it's still fun to play, and anyone who sees Magic cards as more of a monetary investment than a resource to be competitive and have fun has lost sight of what the game is about already. I don't enjoy dropping tons of money on cards any more than anybody else does, but most hobbies are expensive now, and it seems like you have to plan on spending a lot of money if you want to be competitive at anything these days.

jenaro mendoza My recommendation for you is to watch more videos on magic. Your deck looks like it falls within the category of standard, so that should be the format you watch videos on. Watch the pro tour dragons of tarkir, learn the cards, and watch deck techs. You will understand how to make better decks, and soon you will maybe know enough to make your own competitive deck, provided of course that you are willing to spend money to do so.

Many magic the gathering players ask the question - Are there any B/W tier 1 decks in modern? Is tokens the best us Orzhov players can do?

Cypho Black White tokens.

B/W tokens is extremely good in my opinion. It can crush Delver decks and if you're lucky you can beat infect, which is a hard match up in my opinion.

Also the viability of a white green tron with everything in the deck being pretty standard except for elesh Norns and batterskulls

It would be nice to have one of these classes going in modern mono green elves that doesnt run craterhoof behemoth. Ive dont it because im a very tribal centric gamer in that a card must provide something to the deck that the tribe cant do normally on its own. Craterhoof is faster damage but ive been able to be tougher than the elves been thrown at me with it.
