The only things certain in life are Death, taxes, and white weenie at Magic the Gathering Tournaments. The following deck is no exception and at times can be just as painful as the first two. If slow grindy gameplay is your thing, look no further! For the main goal of this deck is to make your opponent’s spells impossible to cast as it beats down with 2/2 bears.
The main function is to tax your opponent to death, ideally by dropping a turn 1 aethervial off a basic plains, then turn 2 dropping either a thalia or a rishadan port to slow down your opponent significantly. Turn three let’s us vial in a mother of runes to ensure your Thalia sticks around around, as well as any of our many other hateful bears. Vial activations mean that your creatures won’t get countered, Mother means creatures get protection from the color of your choice, and Thalia and port mean most of our opponent’s spells cost more than they should.

Great. I like this channel but we dont usually get too much on legacy. This is nice. Professor, how about a top 5 "budget" legacy decks (burn merfolk enchantress etc)? Or some individual vids on the most typical legacy archetypes so we know how to face them better when those legacy tournaments come?

Ok, so basically you need: 1. to attack the main threats of the format with creature effects 2. Protect said creatures, while they lock the opponent out and beat your opponent senseless 3. Have a plan B for longer games 4. Use spells and lands to your advantage I'm tinkering a D&T frontier/standard deck and, so far, it has been really challenging....

I'm in the process of building death and taxes now. I've been testing with it for some time now and it's great. I think that the flexibility is what makes it so resilient to any meta. 1 recent addition that I consider a 100% must have 4 of is Recruiter of the Guard from conspiracy 2. It tutors up any creature in the deck with exception of Serra Avenger and Brimaz if you're playing him and can loop for an almost endless stream with Flickerwisp. Cast recruiter, get Flickerwisp, vial in wisp to blink recruiter get another Flickerwisp, repeat, on your last wisp get another recruiter for something else. It's totally bananas if you're ahead it shuts door quickly if you're behind it can turn your deck into a tool box of sorts with containment priest, Thalia, mom, revoker, spirit of the labyrinth, the new Sanctum Prelate aka chalice of the hatebear. I also have found that Gideon Ally of Zendikar in the sideboard is a great and unexpected. Man I love this deck! Great video Prof!

I'm doing a werewolf naya tokens and taxes deck that only needs to lock down your opponent to one spell each turn (canonist)to pump out a bunch of werewolves(with mayor of avabruk) it also runs trinisphere and sphere of resistance but also mana ramping(and creature/token ramping)to get around that blanket hate. Idk if you'll ever do a serious werewolves deck but I think this is how it should be done.

Well done, I have to commend you on your ability to identify Death&Taxes as a control/prison deck. Many people identify Death&Taxes as an aggro deck but they are very wrong. Yes the deck can end games quickly but that is the nature of Legacy for you, control decks closing games FAST. I would however like to correct you on some of the matchups. Death&Taxes has a pretty abysmal matchup against Shardless BUG. It is very hard for Death&Taxes to maintain a board presence at all against Toxic Deluge, Hymn to Tourach, Abrupt Decay and many more fun things. Since most of the creatures in Death&Taxes are pretty insignificant alone they have a hard time competing with all the card advantage and card quality Shardless is able to produce. I would also say that with the addition of Prelate and Recruiter of the Guard the Omni-Tell matchup becomes much more even. Prelate on 3 pretty much says "Do you have Dream Halls in your deck?" Overall I found this video very insightful into what Death&Taxes as a deck really is. Well done professor!

T1GlistenerElf Never say that Legacy players don't like trying out new cards! I know "Imperial Taxes", but it's important to recognize that the decks are widely different. Imperial Taxes doesn't rely on grinding out the game in the manner Death and Taxes does. It's too feeble for that. They play lots of different catch-somes mainboard, but they have the added disadvantage of easily losing the edge to a well timed removal spell. Also, the "Imperial Taxes" version is ironically terrible against the traditional one.

Veikko Elo www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=13410&d=278682&f=LE www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=13462&d=279100&f=LE It's still Death and Taxes, and it still plays the same disruption-based aggro plan.

T1GlistenerElf I was talking about the version that basically ran everything else as a two-of with 4 Recruiters. Playing the two as one-ofs does not really contribute as a "must-have" card. Certainly not necessary enough to find their lack disturbing.

I do disagree with some of this because Taxes is probably the most meta dependent deck with these results. Recruiter is being tested in the main, and so is Sanctum Prelate. There are splashes of the deck that ran the old recruiter. This one is miles better for our x/2 and under ( Most of our creatures) Grixis and Miracles with Prelate on 1 is too good not to have in game one. Of course this means that rearranging needs to be done with the creature sets.

Any dech tech is outdated after some time, time prooved that (as now) mirran crusaders and prelate are still mainboard while recruiter of the guard has been an addition. Legacy is an eternal fornat but surely is not stagnant.

I started playing this deck a couple months ago, and it's been a lot of fun! Just got my recruiters, and I'm excited to test them out and see where the creature-base goes from here. D&T definitely rewards you for knowing the metagame more than anything else. Choosing the right card to name with a Revoker or Pithing Needle (especially if it's not on the field yet) or choosing the right number with Sanctum Prelate can be the turning point of the game. Professor, a minor critique: I know it might be your inner Californian talking, but why do you refer to the creatures in the deck as dudes and Spirit of the Labyrinth as a bad boy, when the majority of them (Spirit included) are women?

Great video and overview! I've got a few corrections/suggestions. This might sound like a downer but I really do appreciate your channel and your hard work, and these are just minor nit picks! 1) Mangara is definitely male. mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Mangara 2) Fewer Flickerwisps than Revokers is likely incorrect for most metagames. 3) Not sure when the video was recorded, but the recent Recruiter of the Guard definitely belongs in a toolbox build such as this. The problem with singletons is you often draw the wrong one at the wrong time. Recruiter helps this immensely! -2 Revoker, +2 Recruiter would be a path forward, especially because you can fetch the former with the latter. 4) Elves has plenty of ways to nullify an equipped Mirran Crusader, including bouncing Dryad Arbors and bouncing Birchlore Rangers. This is why going to the air is so important against them (see #2). 5) Speaking of which, Elves is one of our harder matchups. Weird that didn't come up in the matchup analysis though you mention the deck several times in the video. Elves is likely to get slightly easier with Thalia 2.0, Recruiter, and Sanctum Prelate (on 4 for NO), but it will still be an uphill climb. Speaking of Thalia 2, Recruiter, and Prelate, maybe a D&T 201 advanced class video? The new printings are still being tested so it will be some time until optimized lists prove themselves in competitive play, but the new printings make this is a GREAT time to try out this ever-evolving deck and see what works for you! Shout out to Thraben University, which has a lot more info about the deck. Thanks again, Prof!

I've never met a D+T player who has ever ran less then 4 Flickerwisp or even considered it. I'd be interested to know whose list you used for the video and maybe get an explanation why. The card just does everything, kills Marit Lage, resets Batterskull, prevents blocks, through a vial its applications sky rocket to mana denial, screwing with attackers, saving your own creatures, untaping one of your lands for swords, it just does everything the deck needs it to do why cut one for something else?

Hey professor, I have a question. Recently I began double-sleeving my cards, but there's a problem. Air gets trapped inside and increases the overall mass of the deck, which can be a pain to deal with. How to you prevent or remove the air trapped inside permanently?
@curbynet
@curbynet 8 жыл бұрын
Air is trapped and stays trapped because you're forcing the plastic into new shapes (from perfectly flat to curving around your cards' edges). Over time, or with constant pressure, the plastic will "learn" to fit your cards. The answer is to play more and store the newly-sleeved cards under pressure.

+Mike Lee Alright, awesome. I haven't been able to play much recently so I'm keeping them stored in tight fitting boxes for now. And lol is it a waste of time to like weigh down these cards with heavy books?
@TheStephenation
@TheStephenation 8 жыл бұрын
Nah, storing double-sleeved cards under heavy books for a while should do a fine job of compressing them. It's not really necessary to go so far, but it should work.

Professor, How about a super budget $20 commander challenge? The goal would be to build a cheap and affordable deck on a super tight budget using a commander of your choice (it can be proxied). I've seen a couple of decks that have already done this and they are super fun to play with once you get a couple of friends in on it. So far I have a Mikaeus, the Unhallowed deck that's super fun to play with and I'm working on building another for fun (though, I still don't know what I want to make yet). I think it would be fun to see what you come up with.

$1271 that will be worth $1400+ a year from now. While a $ 350 standard deck will plummet in value four months from now.
@paulrogers8725
@paulrogers8725 8 жыл бұрын
DreamVikings I don't think you should buy either... even if you can theoritically resell for a higher price (meaning no reprints of the cards you buy) $1271 is a huge initial investment. Why wouldn't you just but stocks instead of playing cards? It's supposed to be a game. P.S. Im supporting the idea that they should reprint the cards to make them cheaper, not advocting they make it more like stocks.

professor, I have a problem. I don't have a local game store but there is one called play the game read the story. I started going there last week and I was invited to a North country Facebook group for MTG players in nny, I have a gut feeling that they don't accept me and it's coming to the point where I want to sell my cards and quit the game. Do you think you can help me with a solution so that I can feel more accepted to the players who go to this store?
