This takes me back to when Maynard and Manfeld were in the finals of the Ixalan pro tour. Manfeld had a sultai energy deck with winding constrictor, longtusk cub, etc. it was a sweet midrange list (attune was still standard legal too). Maynard had a grindy, relatively control oriented list with ipnu rivulet, countervailing winds, refurbish, GPG, angel of invention and champion of wits. Good stuff.

I think the version with black that plays the Naga that can tutor a card into your graveyard might be interesting with 1 card wonders like Platinum Angel. It's a solid body to reanimate by itself due to lifelink, and will put the best card in your deck into your graveyard to reanimate next turn.

Definitely the battle between exponential amounts of life gain and exponential amounts of army building for me :) Most of the time someone has already won by that point, so it was great to see both decks actually functioning yet still having to fight each other - something that doesn't often happen in lategame play outside of boring trading of counterspells.

At 22:15: Wow, I wouldn't have come up with the idea of milling the haste creature of the Neoform opponent. However, if that's the plan, I think your best bet was to wait for them to flood the board with Neoform creatures, wait until they barely don't have lethal on board, and *then* try to mill their 1-of Rubblefort from their now smaller library. You might be able to still win from that position with Refurbish -> GPG -> Deputy (which you'd already milled), assuming they don't have an Abrade for your GPG. Another interesting question is whether you should've used the Minister's first mill charge on them, too, since you're both combo decks, they threatened to be faster than you, and they're quite fragile to mill effects.
@LegenVD3 жыл бұрын
I thought about it some more while I was editing this video and came to roughly the same conclusion. Although there is a chance we can prevent them from getting any creatures in play by milling all Dualcasters. So we have to weigh the instant-win (no Dualcasters left) vs the likelihood of winning after they have an army of 3/3 creatures, even if they can't attack right away if we happened to mill every Rubblefort. Either way the odds are not in our favor.
@MondSemmel3 жыл бұрын
@@LegenVD Fair point. Though if you'd survived the turn, as I mentioned you did have Refurbish -> GPG -> Deputy of Detention. Assuming they'd completed their combo but had milled Rubblefort, they'd have a board of roughly 4x Dualcaster Mage, 4x Glasspool Mimic, and a Combat Celebrant, all with +1/+1 counters. Maybe slightly less, since they might have at least one of those 9 cards in hand. Then you untap, Deputy their Dualcaster Mage (which exiles all 4x Mages and 4x Mimics since they have the same name), and leave them with a Combat Celebrant. Then they untap, and need removal for both your Deputy and potentially your GPG - so something like Sea Gate Stormcaller plus Abrade would probably be unbeatable, but if they didn't have both, I suppose they'd kill Deputy, get back 4x Dualcaster Mage (2/2s now) and turn 4x Mimic into 4x Combat Celebrant, and then every turn the game would come down to whether you could draw or mill more Deputies than they could draw removal. ... Though now that I think about it, them using a single piece of instant-speed interaction in your end step during the next two turns would likely still be lethal, since your removal is all sorcery speed.

Gpg didn't get it's keyword eternalize added, while some other cards got mill keyword, i wonder why?
@jerodast3 жыл бұрын
Eternalize is an activated ability on the card that "gets eternalized". GPGift has a triggered ability that affects a card _separate_ from itself. So, they're just not the same ability and therefore couldn't use the word Eternalize - although obviously the effect _was_ designed to be just like Eternalize in its results! On the other hand "mill" is defined as the EXACT same thing as previous mill effects. It's simply a change of phrasing. Also note that GPG was in the _same set_ as Eternalize cards, so they definitely would've used that word if it was the ability they wanted. That mean's it's really an entirely different situation from how "mill" was _retroactively_ applied to a ton of old cards.
@jerodast3 жыл бұрын
I do think a lot about this stuff a lot though :) I guess GPG could've said: *"At the beginning of combat on your turn, all creatures in your graveyard gain Eternalize {0}, then you may activate one of those abilities, then all those creatures lose the ability. Any token created as a result of that ability being activated gains haste until end of turn."* Obviously it is not very elegant to phrase the temporary and limited use of an activated ability! The other option might've been to define lowercase "eternalize" to be a lowercase keyword action in addition to the keyword ability, and GPG would've said: *"At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may eternalize one creature in your graveyard, and the resulting token gains haste until end of turn."* They probably thought this wasn't worth it just to make one card work, and might've been afraid that people would get confused about whether the GPG use of "eternalize" was an activated ability or not, or only applied to cards that already had Eternalize.
