This was another excellent deck tech. My wife and I watched it just now. I really like how you first introduced the Legacy format and also dispelled some rumors and misconceptions about it. Also briefly breaking down the difference between Legacy & Vintage.

Thank you for this list and the advices. I just started Legacy a month ago and i'm still saving money for the goblin guides but you gave me motivation to go to the shop and say "Yes, I'll be part of the Legacy tournament". Thank you very much. It's been a lot of fun, and I claerly feel like I am improving my abilities as a Magic Player by playing Legacy ! You rock Prof !

I haven't played MTG since the middle off college back in 2004. Came across a local card shop to look for Yugioh for my son and found out that they're running weekly Legacy tournaments. I want to play again without spending a dime and came across my good old goblin/burn deck still intact. Going to test it out! Great videos btw Tolarian dude...been watching your videos as I reintegrate myself back to the Magic scene. You've also inspired me to put my journey on KZbin. Maybe...hah!

As a person who is recently getting back into magic again, I do love these videos that have budget decks to get your toes wet in these formats. I'm not going to lie, I do love me some burn decks, so that helps too. This deck is really great to try both modern and legacy, so that's a BIG bonus. Thank you Professor.

Thank you Professor! I am planning to attend GP SeaTac and was planning on playing Burn. You gave me some great ideas and things to consider to get me ready for my first ever Legacy event. I go into it with an open mind and to simply learn through however many rounds I am fortunate enough to play in. Thank you for your insight! Strangely enough Your Mono U Pauper Delver list got me into Pauper which led me to buy Chain lightnings for my pauper burn list. So all I was missing was a playset of Price of progress and I was all set!. Talk about a deck that hits all formats. With modest changes you have a Legacy, Modern, and Pauper deck!

To get into Legacy, I'm taking my already built Modern decks, and picking up Legacy cards when possible. I've got R/W Burn, G/U Infect, Merfolk, and Affinity. Another good idea that someone mentioned, is to print out proxies to test decks. That's what I did with Merfolk and Soul Sisters. Your buddies, or someone you're familiar with shouldn't mind if you test that way.

Great video. Legacy is the only format I'll play. Its great when new sets come out and you don't feel like you have to figure out the new meta or obtain the soon to be expensive standard cards soon, you just look for the gifts R&D gives to legacy/vintage, and scoop them up quick. I got my playset of chain lightnings for $0.20. (from the 5 cent common box at a LGS) Would love to hear your takes on why those creatures instead of the typical ball lightning etc,

For those who would rather play a deck that does contain blue at budget cost, then there are also quite a few options for you. Mono blue is a simple deck that uses delver of secrets and invisible stalker, equipment such as runechanter's pike (an uncommon worth 50 cent) with lots of cheap blue spells such as brainstorm, ponder, thought scour, preordain (these are all good cantrips in legacy that are no more than a dollar or two each). You can also run counterspell, which is great at only a few dollars too, and competitive in legacy. A simple deck like this is actually fairly strong and you'll be able to have fun games with it each time. You can further extend this if you have some nonbasic lands spare to make U/R or U/B delver too. U/R adds in monastery swiftspear and lightning bolts, which are not too expensive,. U/r also opens up a options such as izzet charm, and the huge array of other burn spells out there. U/B is my personal favourite, I've outfitted mine with force of wills, fetches and soon I'll have dual lands, but none of these are actually required for U/B delver! You can instead run duress, gurmag angler (yes it's VERY good powerhouse in competitive legacy), budget removal such as doom blade, smother, maybe even dismember if you have a bit more spare cash. If you're coming from standard and you have spare tasigurs, dig through times or thoughtseizes, just put them straight in! Luckily brainstorm, delver of secrets and ponder are not too pricey, and they're the some of the most played cards in legacy, all these delver decks run 4 of them, and that's a large portion of the deck already made for you. As for nonbasic lands, the 'check' lands (that enter untapped if you control relevant basic land, such as clifftop retreat) are fairly good. They're cheap and will do the job. If you have fetches spare from standard, or shocks left over from the recent Ravnica set, you can fit them in to play too. Another great card in budget legacy builds is Mana leak. It's a very common sight in modern, but not seen in legacy. It's not seen because that slot is taken up by force of will, counterspell or spell pierce, which are usually better, but not 'strictly' better. It's still good in legacy though as manabases are extremely tight and paying 3 mana to stop it's effect is usually difficult. I hope this helps, as I know mono red isn't everyone's cup of tea, and legacy truly is one of the most fun and skill-intensive formats. For those interested in my U/B delver currently: 17 land 4x watery grave (replacement for duals) 4x polluted delta 2x flooded strand 1x drowned catacomb 5x island 1x swamp 9 creatures 4x delver of secrets 1x tasigur, the golden fang 2x gurmag angler 1x true-name nemesis 2x baleful strix 34 noncreature spells 1x liliana of the veil 3x thoughtseize 4x hymn to tourach 4x brainstorm 4x ponder 2x spell pierce 3x force of will 2x dismember 2x spell snare 1x dig through time 2x stifle 4x daze 2x thought scour

I can back up the Professor on the power of Burn, even a budget version in Legacy. I own multiple decks in Legacy, the most powerful one being OmniTell, a way to cheat out Emrakul while playing a bunch of blue cards which usually wins turn 3. Whenever my mate plays a game with me I'm always sacred as burn can easily do 11 damage in a single turn. Heck the games are usually in his favour since the deck is always consistent and always fast. For this very reason I also built a Legacy Burn deck. It's just that much fun and that much power for so little money.

Legacy is expensive, but I think is also what a lot of people who play Magic START by playing. When I started magic we had no idea there was a banned list, or restrictions on which sets. We just grabbed cards we liked, tried to make lists we saw online and played against each other. My friends newest Sliver deck would go up against my Suicide Black Hatred deck and a friend was playing Auratog. Whatever we had we played, and I liked that about it. It can be CHEAP if you're not having to buy new decks all the time. It's open to whatever you have without saying "can't play that card"

I just built a legacy red burn. The price of fetch lands has gone crazy, you would probably spend 3-500 dollars on those for this deck now. I also traded goblin guide for vexing devil. Both are excellent cards, the Devil is like 1/3 the price of guide though. I spent about 120 bucks without a sideboard(yet). It's a great entry on a budget. It's lost a little consistency without the fetch thinning my land draw but I'm not going to spend another 300 dollars right now for that gain.

A solid build! As a personal preference I'd up the creature count and possibly make the creatures all/primarily Goblins and run goblin grenade. Tons of budget Goblins in this format. Goblin flunkies being one of my favorite. If you wanted to keep this build and make it more budget friendly you could replace the Guides for Jackal Pups. So many options with legacy!

Thank you professor for this great guide, mono red now seem an incredibly cheap deck cause you can build it for pauper, upgrade it for modern with just the goblin guides and few more, and at last add price of progress and other small cards for 50-70 bucks and switch to legacy!
@mightyone3737

Legacy has a surprising number of decks that can be built on the cheap that are actually semi-competitive. Things like pox can be run for pretty cheap if you can get around Liliana, while Burn as noted is extremely cheap to be a turn 3 threat, and probably under $100 to do it. Burn isn't exactly stable, but it is fun and can be run for dirt cheap. I run a slightly slower deck, since I find I run into too much control/life gain to win as quickly as a fully traditional burn deck requires, so I run lots of choice draw cards, though these aren't exactly optimal they end up working out okay, since either outcome is always good for 3 mana. I also avoid most of those expensive cards, because I find Flame Rift is a fine alternative to the Eidolon, because I'm bad at magic I assume, since nobody else still runs that.

Even though it’s looked down on and considered “too easy” or “cheap” but I adore burn decks and always have and I realized legacy burn was a cheap option and immediately got my deck. Unfortunately for me, my LGS only runs a modern FNM just once a month, so for me it's difficult to get into modern seeing as it's hardly played. I'd love to build an expensive modern deck, but I cant see it being worth it for just 4 hours per month...

Professor (and whoever is interested), I found this list on the internet for a legacy deck and I actually really liked it. It's not exactly budget (the price of this deck as of today is 373.85 dollars on TCG player, sideboard included) But for a deck you in theory will never have to spend money again on it? I think it's a reasonable value, and it's cheaper than even most modern or even standard decks. However, I was disappointed that you didn't address (and even brushed over) the few issues I find particularly relevant to players looking to get into legacy: 1) Support for the format - There are very few (comparative) tournaments and other WotC supported functions where players can play Legacy. This means there is very little return on investment (in terms of prizes; fun is unquantifiable and subjective) for players and it can be difficult to even find places to play consistently. 2) Cost - While many decks in Standard cost 1/4 the price of a budget Legacy or top/mid tier Modern deck, it is much easier to mitigate costs. FNMs and other tournaments make it much easier to recover some of the investment in a Standard deck than a Legacy deck. (I once went an entire standard season making over $100 dollars off of a single investment in a Standard deck, enough to upgrade to the next Standard season for essentially free.) Also, for many players it is usually a lot easier to invest $50-100 dollars once every 6-7 months (and get to play every week) than save up for a year or more (and get to play less regularly). 3) Player attitudes - While not indicative of all Legacy players, many of them have a "superior" attitude. The idea that, as you said, they are playing a "more skill intensive" version of the game (a claim I do not dispute, but take issue with) leads some players to act in a less than respectful manner to other players. (this may be just a local issue, but I have heard horror stories from all over, so I doubt it.) Otherwise, a great deck suggestion.

***** "3) Player attitudes - While not indicative of all Legacy players, many of them have a "superior" attitude. "I think even generalizing some demographic of people's personalities in this way is kind of a toxic attitude.

+Shakes Simons 1) Yes this might be true depending where you live. One should definitely make sure there are tournament support in Legacy in his or her area (if you want to play in those) before buying into Legacy. 2) FNMs and other tournaments do not make money or profit for you if you are an average (50 % win) or worse player. This is a hobby and as such you should enjoy it and accept that it costs money. Playing Standard and not trading very smart and actively will _cost_ you money for 100 % sure. Buying into Legacy, playing for as long as you want (say in this case for 3 years for example) then sell your collection will _make_ you money 90 % certainly. Yes the buy in is a lot more for Legacy but only format that actually costs money to play is Standard (and limited). 3) That is just completely false at least in my experience, Legacy players are some of the nicest and "noob" friendly players you will find in Magic. Legacy as a format is the hardest to get into though so you might confuse that with player elitism. It is also by far the most skill intensive, take it from a 15 year veteran of the game that plays pretty much all the bigger formats competitively.

***** The legacy community is the most welcoming format community I've ever encountered in Magic, probably because they so want to promote their format. The last Legacy tournament I went to had a little kid show up with a Standard deck, and the kid managed to win some games against some serious grinders. Now I'm not saying they intentionally played down to his level to give him an edge ... (pause) ... but I'm saying they don't strike me as elitist at all, they strike me as enthusiasts.

Joe Leekhead This might just be a local problem then. A majority of the players in my area (which does not have a large Legacy player base) are very elitist. They think just because they have a more expensive deck with older cards that automatically makes them better players. But only 1 of them can actually explain Chains of Mephistopheles...

I am going to be buying into legacy soon but I was hoping not to do it through burn but it is super tempting since I already have 80% of this deck. Also Havoc is a great sideboard card against White in Legacy if they aren't running enchantment removal main board.

mono red burn is one of the greatest legacy decks. is extreamly powerful and there are effectively no changes of the deck for years! this clip is 4 years old and the deck is still the same.

Very sweet mono red burn deck, which you can just transform a little bit to be playable in Modern, or even if you want to add some cards for Vintage. I'll try it with proxies first, I've always wanted a mono red burn deck. I just modified it a bit. If it's really good stuff and that I have pleasure to play with it, I will eventually buy the cards. Thanks for this video, but also for all other so diverse and excellent videos you make about Magic, it reinforces my love for this game (best game ever, way better than Pokemon or Yu Gi Oh ^^ :-P)

I hope goblin guide does get a reprint, he is a huge staple in all mono red decks. I like most players I know come and go into playing magic over the years. I used to have a similar mono red burn deck ( didn't have the creature base do to the fact there where not ever printed yet.) I do have a question what are your thoughts on running fewer land? the mana curve is usually really small. Also what about a one of wheel of fortune just to get more gas? ( can't remember if it is legacy legal.... just a thought)

march 2017, this deck has actually gotten cheaper to build, with the exception of the eidolons, but the price drop as a whole deck. is still more significant than the price increase of eidolon even the costs of the fetchlands have gone down significantly now

Thank you for this wonderful describing video! Well, I don't care about any format, we play kitchen table magic and it would be nice if Wizards would stop printing bulk.

while they are pretty expensive still, a delver build in legacy is actually almost the same amount as some of the high tier modern decks. still looking around an 800+ price tag is relatively cheap considering most of the top tier legacy decks being 1.5k+ isn't that bad!

I bought an 800 card box of random mtg cards from the 90s to 2021 for $15 and built with that. Very cheap, had some good cards in it. Not Good enough for competitive but for casual play, pretty good.

I'm not that into legacy, but for burn sideboard I think we can also have some Mindbreak Trap for combos ,maybe detention sphere or ashen rider against show and tell and maybe some graveyard hate with relic of progenitus or something of the like. And the good think too is that the sideboard is not expensive too :)

Sideboard for burn is usually Ensnaring Bridge, Smash to Smithereens, Searing Blood/Searing Blaze, Tormod's Crypt, Red Elemental Blast, etc.

I don’t know if this is a great place to post this but thought it would be met w open minds and at least not snarky. First; I haven’t played competing mtg since I had to make a last minute change to my extended deck because I ran 4 hypnotic specters and 4 Juggernaut (they were banned 😂) But I’ve been trying to break Zurs weirding for, 🤔🤔🤔, 15 years?? What about Zurs W + experimental frenzy?? What do we think?
