Honestly, one of the big reasons I've stepped away from even playing Commander with people at the local game store is the constant influx of "must have" cards. With sets dropping what feels like every other month with special Commander decks, masters sets, etc. I just can't be bothered to keep up. Not to mention the idiotic prices on some of the products.

It's ironically hilarious that wizards goes "we refuse to acknowledge the secondary market" and then push out a $1,000 product when the previous msrp of cards was .05 cents. Amazing that they just pulled the numbers out of thin air. But back to your comment, the proxy market in china must be seriously crushing all those Rudy's and LGS's out there with everything becoming so expensive naturally, that even WIZARDS themselves is trying to dip into the proxy market. Well....I say "naturally" but there are no natural market forces with the secondary market. It's just nonstop insider trading like Sheldon and his crybaby committee mysteriously buying up mountains of Worldfire at .30 cents and reselling them at $30 each after the unforseen unban. It's just like that that just makes the game super unapproachable to new players and highly encourages proxying now.

It's a common (and dirty) tactic to force an increase in perceived value. You see it all the time in collector circles that are being manipulated by the people buying a product who work with the people grading a product. I've seen it in coin collecting, I've seen it in video game collecting, and it's the beginnings of it happening here. They're hoping to drive up the perception of value so they can leave the last guy in the chain holding the bag.

I knew I could always count on this channel to keep it real. This is the 30th anniversary and instead of doing some crazy celebration of all things Magic we get a diamond crested back handed cash grab. I dropped out of magic for about 5 years and I would still buy the random pack here or there but I had stopped playing in general. I started playing again around the middle of 2017 and I remembered why I enjoyed the game. Started playing modern and commander and was buying a draft booster for every set because I like gambling(haha). I stayed with this consumerist trend until the last 2 sets, after the failure that was the d&d commander block and the overly expensive 2nd double masters I skipped Unfinity and Dominaria United and having had this time to look at things I don't know if I'm willing to keep buying anymore especially after they announced this gold encrusted turd. Only time will tell I guess, keep up the great videos cause your stuff is probably one of the few things I still find fun about this game.

I've been printing proxies w/color on normal paper and gluing onto commons so I can play casual commander/edh since 2012. Never did anyone care. I only ever got asked, sometimes, if I played in tournaments, which is a completely fair question to someone who doesn't know me. I've since slowed down a lot in playing the game in person, but have only ever spent money on ink, paper, and sleeves my entire time playing saving thousands while in college and afterwards. I'm so happy WOTC shot themselves in the foot with this, because now they've opened the gates to EVERYONE with their message that: "Proxies are ENCOURAGED for casual play". Their only mistake was assuming players would use THEIR proxies... Support your local proxy maker and buy a few of those expensive cards you've always wanted to play with but could never bit the bullet on a stupid pricetag. Enjoy your proxies, and have fun playing with any card at the kitchen table. I promise, it's more guilt-free playing casually with proxies and saving money than playing casually with real cards and spending too much.

The thing people don't realize is that these are proxies that people buy in the same marketplace they buy normal copies. That's important because that means they retain value. That's important because it means when you're done playing with them you can get some money back. Wizards is a company that doesn't sell their product to consumers, they sell to investors (distributors and secondary market store owners) who sell to consumers. They know their primary concern is to make investors happy, which includes the LGS, online marketplaces, and players who buy smart. Some players don't understand that, and assume that unless wizards is targeting them with every product that means there's something fishy going on. Please continue to do this with proxies and continue to promote their use. The only people who should be buying cards worth more than $5 each are people planning on getting money back out of them later. If you're not doing that you might as well throw your cards in the trash when you're done with them.

My last MTG purchase was a set of proxies from China. I highly recommend it. Great quality with a huge selection of art (You could even use your own art). If the cards I got were real I would have had to spend over AUD$3000 but I got them for like AUD$70 (roughly 70c per card).

Now for real, people been saying that magic's dying for a while but now I seriously think that their bubble it's about to burst. As you mentioned they just couldn't hold their greed and went full gas with the stupidest shit you can even imagine, sets and cards are pumped in the game so quickly that you don't even have time to digest them and in the process they damaged the quality and value of their game, their player base and the value of their own cards that now are rendered totally useless after a couple months due to the power creep, losing all their monetary value. All good things come to an end, an even if wizards keeps on the business I know this will be the end for many players that will get tired of not being listened in the era where making your voice heard is (in theory) easier than ever.

Also the saddest part is that you could see some good ideas under all the garbage ones, at least I personally like alternative art for different cards like what you used to see with zendikar basic lands and reprints and the idea of guest artists with adequate styles for some sets (like Kamigawa for example) it's also very good and seems to appeal to that anime loving niche that might be inside the same player base of the game but of course wizards wouldn't stop there .

Unfortunately I think 30th edition will 'sell out' because WOTC is the only people who know how many are sold. So they're going to have it open for a brief period of time. @@profanemagic5671 I'm aware of those prints. How much did those cost? Wotc is testing the response to breaking their promise. The reserved list is an open question and while they might get sued for violating it, it is equally likely that they will win or lose that lawsuit. So the question to ask yourself isn't about whether or not they'll get sued or if they'll win, but rather, how much money will they get in the short term for violating the reserved list promise. Also, those cards are actually used in proxy legal vintage tournaments. I've seen them in tournaments that I've played in. Though my proxies were not as nice as those. WoTC says standard is dying, I say standard has been dead and they've been doing weekend at bernies since 2012 or maybe before. Standard has always been a bad idea for the long term success of the game. So if standard is dying, and eternal formats are the obvious and solid answer, then Wotc is going to want to be able to print whatever the fuck they want.

There are like 3 dual lands and a Timetwister that I would like to 100% complete my commander deck that I have been working on for about 8 years. The total price of these FOUR cards is over 5000 dollars. Needless to say, unless something drastically changes in the way they do things, my deck will never be complete. I could afford it too, but I just won't do that. No cardboard on Earth is worth that in my eyes.
