There are so many pushed cards in this set and I really like the power level. With Mama Norn (and to some extent Mediocre Misstep) drowning out the discussions about how good the other cards are, many of them are undervalued. It'll be interesting to see how the set develops.

This actually looks like it has Legacy levels of tempo without being incredibly oppressive. It's actually surprising you designed a deck that is as close to "fair" as can be in modern while still being playable. I think the new 2 drop SEEMS good, especially in a control mirror.

The 1 toughness makes spelldancer weak vs a lot of the removal in the format that Ledger Shredder dodges (easier for Fury, Wren & Six pings), but I agree that when it sticks around it's strong. I think the kicker is going to be deciding what kind of deck wants card draw via connive and what deck wants to double up their big hits (pump spells in prowess or maybe even infect).

I added mercurial spelldancer to my edric deck. Being able to copy extra turn spells is ungodly good let alone just how easy it is to attack.

This video taught me that I need to put Misstep in my Murktide deck. Card looked really really good. I think Shredder is way better than Spelldancer, but the latter is already seeing play in Legacy Delver and looks strong there.

The question for this card replacing ledger shredder is: Does Card Advantage outweigh a Thick Boy? From what I see in Modern's removal heavy meta, then yes. In other formats where removal is less heavy, then no.

Misstep looks like the extras should go in the board for games you go first. Kinda like Gemstone is sometimes in your builds for when you are on the draw. They are okay against an unknown opponent, but against fast decks, cascade decks you can bring them in for both 2 and 3. But on the play they are exceptionally strong against most decks.

What about some of the new proliferate spells as well? Experimental Augury with this card would be pretty amazing. Put it in a Shell with Voidwing Hybrid, maybe rot priest, copy, proliferate, poison win? Maybe the new oil counter land as well, double trigger the rot priest with a singular spell and proliferate already accumulated poison?

I'd thought the Spelldancer basically forcing you to main phase the copied spell would be too big of a downside, but it looks really good here. Shredder is a little harder to kill since it can connive out of bolt range, but this feels like it applies more pressure.

People have compared it to Arcanist in Legacy and i can see why: Arcanist didn't really see success in Modern because there is too much removal, but it did in Legacy thanks to Daze and Force of Will, and Mercurial seems going in the same direction. Without protection it probably won't stick because it has similar weaknesses as Arcanist (it doesn't lose to GY have but it's much easier to kill with things like W6) but Shredder proved that sometimes underdogs can make it.

Hmm idk, the way I look at it is everything dies to removal nowadays which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And in a deck that runs at least 8-12 cheap, value centric creatures the opponent won’t always have an answer for all of them. Whatever they use removal on, means 1 less removal spell for your other creatures so more of a chance for them to do their thing. The spelldancer seemed really solid, especially being able to copy Iteration twice is pretty gross among other things.

@@MekanikKommandoh88 Yes, Rag’s dash ability does help get around wrenn since it’s sorcery speed so really but it still dies to dart like Spelldancer. Wrenn is still played heavily yes and it can deal with it. However if the thing discouraging players from playing a creature is “it dies to removal” considering how good removal is across the board currently, then why even play creatures at all at this point? The opponent isn’t always guaranteed to have removal and even if they do, there are other creatures the opponent may have to prioritize killing over others. What I’m saying is yes the 1 toughness is a weakness for Spelldancer but removal is abundant now that it being killed by lava dart or wrenn doesn’t affect much in the larger scheme of things. At least imo.

@@riotron1026 I don’t completely disagree. I just think that in Modern justifying a creature with Spelldancer’s stats requires more value than it can give. It’s a cool card, no doubt, but its real home is probably Legacy where you’ve got less removal, Force to protect it, stealing Initiative due to being unblockable, and powerful cantrips to copy.

I think the real kicker will be how much x/1 removal there is kicking around in formats. Didn’t see w6 that league which is fortunate, but I could imagine spelldancer gets its ass blasted pretty good by w6 compared to Shredder.

I don't see Spelldancer being nearly as strong as you made it out to be in the first few minutes, but I can see it finding a place in some decks. It's definitely not a terrible card, but to be Monke levels of broken, it'd need to cost only 1 mana.
