couple of other notes on the deck - -Opponent fetching with leonin arbiter in play gives you the option to respond by blinking it with displacer after they pay the cost, as the payment is treated not as using the stack but as a state-based action. if opponent pays for arbiter, it has to be done before the fetch resolves and thus gives you response time. Blinked arbiter hasn’t been paid for, so they’ll have to pay a second time as it’s a new instance of the static ability -vial activations will retain memory of how many counters were on it before it leaves the battlefield (assuming it’s destroyed or removed somehow). I.E. if you activate vial with 2 counters on it and your opponent responds with kolaghan’s command you still get to play a 2-drop -strangling exiled permanents when Rest In Peace is in play will move the creature from exile to exile while still being able to kill a creature on board as RiP is a replacement effect and the conditions for processing have technically been met cool deck, cool video :) also Liliana isn’t necessary for the deck but is an option.

Hey Prof, just wanted to thank you. I'm a returning MTG player from the 90's. I've been very excited to get back into it, playing on mtgo. However, I've realized that I'm getting more enjoyment from watching your videos than actually playing the game! (Like you, I think the social element has always been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game and that mtgo misses this). In addition, thanks for teaching me the new way to think about playing and deck construction (my how it has evolved). Further, your video on why parents should be happy their kids are playing magic was very satisfying. I recall facing the same issues along with the paranoia that it was a form of satanism (lol). I prefer the mono-white version due to the mana consistency, access to Tectonic Edge, and for the heavier flash effect of Restoration angel. If anyone's interested in a list, here's the one I've been running to some success in Modern: Creatures: 27 4x Thraben Inspector 4x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben 4x Leonin Arbiter 2x Serra Avenger 4x Blade Splicer 4x Flickerwisp 2x Mirran Crusader 1x Thalia, Heretic Cathar 4x Restoration Angel Instants: 4 4x Path to Exile Artifacts: 4 4x Aether Vial Lands: 23 4x Ghost Quarter 4x Tectonic Edge 2x Mutavault 1x Eiganjo Castle 1x Shefet Dunes 11x Plains Sideboards typically include a smattering of cards - Selfless Spirit, Dusk//Dawn, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, Kitchen Finks, Relic of Progenitus, Sunlance, Disenchant, Ethersworn Canonist etc. Basically pick accordingly to the metagame is. Personally, I enjoy playing a more aggressive style of Death & Taxes, especially with Tron, Storm and Death's Shadow decks taking control of the format. The fliers are helpful to close out games quickly once you cause your opponent to stumble. The keywords in this deck are not to be underestimated either. The combination of first strikers on the ground and fliers in the air puts your opponent on tons of pressure to deal with one of your threats while you hinder their mana. Definitely my go-to in both Modern and it's more powerful counterpart, Legacy!

I've been playing and optimizing this deck for a year. If you want a way more optimal version of the deck do this changes: -1 Gonti -1 Liliana -1 Thalia Heretic Cathar +1 Blade Splicer/Aven Mindcensor/Mirran Crusader +1 Eldrazi displacer +1 Land (I guess prof went with 21 lands) Eldrazi displacer is too good not to go for a full 4-of, so put the fourth one in there. Depending on your meta Aven Mindcensor can be the 5th pseudo-arbiter, super annoying. If your meta consists on black and green decks go for the Crusader. I used it till recently. Blade Splicer if my choice tho, in some matches game 1 flickerwisp can be a pretty dead card, and the Splicer always gives you tons of value, while making use of the extra mana witj eldrazi displacer. Gonti is a spicy but super bad card in my opinion, and Liliana is a waste of money as pitching cards from your own hand is not cool in this deck as you want to save them to vial them in. Thalia can be good against a super aggro meta and can be included, but I prefer Blade Splicer. Oh, and always go 22 lands, the mana base is super clunky, only bad part of the deck IMO. My sideboard consists of 2 Fatal Push, 1 Burrenton Forge Tender (MUST have vs decks which board in anger of the gods/pyroclasm), 3 RIP, 1 Graffdigger's Cage (vs counters company, elves.. etc), 3 Stony Silence, 2 Mirran Crusader, 1 Aven Mindcensor and 2 Orzhov pontiffs (incredibly good in grindy creature matchups).

I have been using ratchet bomb again pesky token decks but Orzhov pontiff might be better. I will give it a shot . Ratchet bomb does double as solid removal for human decks with lots of 1/2 drops. And they can be 4/4's 5/5's I don't use Fatal Pushes, i don't see what value they bring, i think Anguished Unmaking is better at dealing with the random thorn in your side especially if it's Liliana. Any reason for these?

deathByStupid Fatal Push is super good for BG(X) decks, Burn, Aggro decks... Any deck that can outrace or grind you, you side them in, fatal push is just a card that's too good.

Calvin Anderson Protects you from Damnation and other "destroy" sweepers and can be useful to trade minions in combat if vialed in (but for this we have the pontiff). I prefer burrenton because it doubles as a infinite blocker in the burn matchup that can eat a burn spell late game. It is also really good vs Ad Nauseam to stop lightning storm (just keep your vial in 1 so they go for the storm and not the laboratory maniac). I don't see a lot of Damnations around but if your meta has them, it is worth considering a slot for it. Burrenton is also 1 CMC, so you can vial it earlier in response to anger of the gods, sweltering suns, or any red sweeper, and that may be relevant for your clock.

I think goblins is still the best budget deck. And i thought out side the box and love my goblin deck. It's consistent and can steal 1st at anytime. I wouldn't call it teir 1 more like 1.5.

Tier is based on representation and not necessarily viability. Mono-red is very capable of taking game one, especially if you main-board Blood Moon, but that's not exactly shocking. Red Deck Wins being the premiere example, mono-red is always a secret threat that players bring out now and again to make sure the game stays "honest".

You can thank not only Death and Taxes but also the new 5 Color Humans deck that is sweeping the meta right now. Ancient Ziggurat has jumped to 12 dollars and Meddling Mage has jumped all the way up to 20 dollars even higher then Thalia. Luckily I bought my playset of Meddling Mage for 5.50 each versus now around 20 at my LGS.

Ya I am almost done making it I just need 2 more Noble Hierarchs and 2 more Aether Vials. To save myself some money I decided to go with 2 Reflecting Pools instead of 2 Horizon Canopys. Even with the drop thanks to Iconic Masters reprint I would like to save some money so I spent 10 bucks a card versus 45 a card for Horizon Canopy. So over the next 3-4 months I will slowly buy or try to trade for the last 2 Hierarchs and the last 2 vials.

An avid D&T player in all formats possible, I’ve yet to try the Eldrazi “splash” in modern. I️ played the mono white Resto/blade splicer version a LOT and really love the deck. I’m definitely going to test something close to this list this week. I️ do think your list looks mostly good but the 2 things I️ noticed were, it looks about a land short, the mono white version runs 23 total and is trying to really leverage strip mining opponents, but the curve is really close to this version, bob also seems solid but there are a lot of 3&4 drops to hit in this deck and it doesn’t have the luxury of lightning bolt like jund does to finish off your opponent before you commit bob suicide. Also Gonti seems sweet but feels like a win more card. So here’s the changes I’m going to make and play this week: -2bob, -1 Gonti +1 Thalia GOT, +1 Lily, +1Vault of the Archangel. I️t feels blasphemous to not have 4 Thalia in any D&T build. I️ really like Lily and want to draw her more reliably. And Vault lets us up our land count and has great utility so it acts like half a spell as well as mana. Also, in a match against a deck like burn or against opposing Eldrazi lifelink and death touch seem super effective. I’m super excited about this deck now. Thanks Prof!

I love this deck, I personally believe Reality Smasher for a closer is fantastic cause it only dies to a small amount of removal in the format and even if its targetted it still taxes the opponent and with enough hand disruption just wrecks an unprepared board

I don't see it. You are often short of mana in this deck, reality smasher would be doing a whole bunch of nothing in your hand. Ticking your aether vial up to 5 mana isn't an option with only 1-2 5 mana creatures. (and really it has to stay at 3 for the deck to function).

I played this deck back when it was tier 3. I don't know why it wasn't more popular, it felt pretty strong. Though, it kinda was the meta choice for me, since the Gitaxian Probe decks were pretty popular then.

Sorry for the long post so here's the TLDR: Confidant and Lili aren't necessary for the strategy to work. Confidant is always good to have but Liliana seems less efficient then Splicer or Crusader. Gonti sounds like cheese. Professor, I've never seen a D&T shell play lili before (or gonti for that matter). I have been playing a mono white E&T for a little bit now. (It's weaker, but I didn't feel like buying the Bobs and I already owned mono white D&T and had been playing it for years). More recent versions I've seen are starting to mainboard smuggler's copters as well as big, and maybe even play a fiend hunter for spice. Where are you getting this list? And to all of those who are discouraged here's my advice: For a budget friendly version (about a 170 ish dollars cheaper.) -2 Confidants -1 Liliana of the veil -1 Gonti +2 Thraben inspector +2 Blade splicer/Mirran crusader. You can spice up your lists with Looter scooters to taste, Fiend hunter if you wanna troll people with more strangler synergies. Ethersworn Cannonist in the side is good in combo heavy metas. What you lose: Confidant's draw power is hard to match. Plain and simple. Blinking Thraben inspector with Eldrazi displacer/flickerwhisp can end up drawing you more cards on an empty hand, but it's either the use of a flickerwhisp (hard to justify) or 5 combined mana to draw a card. Not very efficient. As for lili and gonti: I must stress that I personally don't like Liliana in a taxes strategy- 4 mana lilis are not good lilis. Gonti to me seems like cheese. Both offer incremental value, but neither of them are necessary for your strategy to work. Blade splicer gives you more value if your not sure what kind of decks you'll be matched against. Repeatedly using eldrazi displacer to blink splicer is value city population you. Mirran crusader is the obvious choice in a green/black heavy meta. What they give you over Lili and Gonti is damage. Each of them can swing for 4 damage a turn if left unchecked. While Blade splicer is harder to protect, the blink value is hilarious. Its a personal choice. If you can afford it you may want to pick up a cavern of souls. Naming Eldrazi is the obvious choice, but you could also name human for a free thalia/confidant against storm or control.

He Prefaced that this was intended for competitive play and budget. Competitive deck implies that you are making a statement that your deck is the most worthy of being called the best. I will also add that surely, There are cheaper ways to build this deck, but at the same time, his version utilizes format staples that can be used to trade into different decks

Get yourself some Vials after they get reprinted my friend, because the deck truly doesn't work without them. Instant speed creatures is the reason the deck is so good, and not having vials puts you at a big disadvantage. I agree that you don't need Bob, but you cannot truly play this deck without the vials.

Been playing this deck for about a year now and I tried the Dark Confidants and I can honestly say that I think they are overrated in this list. As always the potential is high but hitting yourself for 4 off of thought-knot is terrible, especially since its a 4 of, and 3 off of Flickerwisp isn’t much fun either and you can count on hitting yourself with at least one of those two. Instead you can run the Mirran Crusaders, or my preference for a real beating, Reality Smasher. And while Liliana is obviously a very good card the deck functions well without it too.
