You should do a list where you take the top 10 most expensive commons but only looking at the least expensive version of each card, so it reflects what people would actually go for when buying singles. It could be an interesting video idea. You could also make it not only for commons, but for all cards too.

Lotus Petal is why Pauper Cycle Storm is one of the most expensive decks in the format, as it runs 4 of them for >$100. Also, Oubliette sees a lot of player in EDH not for efficiency but because it can remove an opponent's commander without allowing them to put it back in their command zone.

Lotus Petal is still amazing. I have a playset and there's nothing it doesn't make better. It shows, as Nizzahon says, how powerful Black Lotus really is.

Black Lotus is so bonkers it's hard to understand how it was ever printed. Some of the power nine are less obvious but, even in the early days, it was pretty obviously broken to anyone that played the game.

So a long while back when I was first getting into Magic back around the first Kamigawa block I went to one of the comic book stores and bought some of the lowest priced packs they had. It was from a set that wasn't so popular and people considered it one of the worst set ever: Prophecy. I ended up getting about 7 packs and in 5 of them I got Rhystic Study.

EDH has always been a thing it just wasn't as popular back in the day. It started back 96 and was originally based of the five elder dragons hence the name Elder Dragon Highlander.

would love to see a version of this list where it's the highest priced commons if you just wanted a copy of that card. For example, if i want a lightning bolt it will cost me $3. If i want a Llanowar Elves, it's fifty cents. I'm sure Lotus Petal will end up being number one, but it would be a more fair list instead of seemingly "finding" commons that are going for alot of money.

This list brings back memories. It is fun to see old cards that were bad back then but are better now. Oubliette was bad back then as it only temporarily got rid of a creature until your opponent played Disenchant (which was in almost every main or sideboard and Tranquility). "Um Actually....."😅 (Just like the game show) Army of Allah was played a bunch in the first "white weenie" deck that started appearing after Fallen Empires was released. And I vividly remember it taking down slow controlling decks (albeit on the play) before they could wrath. With Swords to Plowshares and only playing 15 to 17 lands the deck had Crusade, White Knight, Order of Leitbur, Icatian Infantry, Icatian Javelineers, Benalish Hero, Land Tax, Tundra Wolves, Clergy of the Holy's Hand, Osai Vultures, Mesa Pegasus, Pikeman, & yes Army of Allah which was essential for the turn 4 kill and it was considered good. True Army kinda got replaced after Ice Age when Adakar Wastes was printed and we could have 12 duals in the deck (Tundra, Adakar Wastes, and city of brass). After that we put in Time Walk, Time Twister, & Unstable Mutation. White Weenie fell out of favor for a while when Tempest was released and the (non-goblins) mono red deck became viable.

The demand for Forest Bear is definitely from EDH, with Ayula and Ruxa being printed there's a lot of interest in Bear Tribal decks and a lot of people like having all the "traditional" 2/2 for 2 Bears in those decks.

Cost of these are hilarious, I remember when the lotus petal came out and people thought it was junk. My friends threw them into trades to help the value and now I have two pages of them in my trade binder.

I recently got a backpayment of some money I was owed and have been blowing it mostly on trading cards. I spent $300 for a PSA 10 Grandopolis Japanese replica, and I spent another $500 on two match winner replicas with the aim of selling them later. So yeah, I have been having some expensive cardboard. But my true desire beyond expensive cardboard is definitely "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

I'd personally count the cheapest version of each card for lists like this. Otherwise, like you say, it'll mostly be old cards that are simply hard to find. I really like the new top 10 idea though!

Got my 2 petal when I open tempest way back it's first released, I remembered it's already top 10 best card of tempest. The 2 other petal I bought when edh is becoming popular and mtg recognized it. Now lotus petal is very expensive

Point your Chain Lightning at your Rukh Egg then bounce it at your opponent. 7 mana for a 4/4 flyer and 3 damage was great in 1994.

I cracked so much Prophecy back in the day. A LGS basically gave the packs to us for free since no one bought them. This is the summer of 2000. As a result I had not joking 30-40 Rhystic Studies. Lost the cards when I went in the military 4-5 years later. Sadness.

I think it would be interesting to mention the lowest price of the cards shown if you don't care about the printing. This would indicate clearly whether a card is only valuable because of the set it's from (ex : llanowar elves) or because it's powerful

Death's Shadow gets -x/-x where the x is your life total. Meaning that it will never be a 13/13 without some power boosts and reduced life. Snuff Out helps reduce your life total to boost Death's Shadow's P/T, and removes a blocker/threat. Win-win. When you are at 12 life, it will finally be a 1/1, because 13 - 12 = 1. The lower your life is, the higher Death's Shadow's P/T becomes. At 1 life, for example, it will be a 12/12. Pump spells further push its power and/or give it evasion, like Rancor.

In general, it is interesting to notice that today's "rares" are far more common than "commons" from older set with far smaller print-run.

Those Alpha cards are excellent examples of why the Reserve List is bullshit. Those are all commons that have had many reprints, yet they're still demanding several hundred dollars a piece. Collector value will be preserved, even if cards get reprinted.

An Alpha Dark Ritual that is for 100x it's revised version's value is everything stupid about playing and collecting magic. And not just because I have a bunch of revised dark rituals. I thought I sold off all my extra old cards that hand any value so I could buy new cards that if I wanted to sell for actual cash are worth pennies on the dollar. I miss magic in a playable form that was accessible to non-Millionaires. Anyway, pretty sure I have a Cabal Ritual I never sold off in the great cull but it's like digging in a giant haystack for a $10' straw' in completely non-negotiable form of worthless. Instead, I found a freakin' mystic remora I never even knew I had! Rhat is also worth $10 to someone somewhere that it will cost postage plus to sent it to and I don't even know where a mail box is anymore. For $10. Man...old Magic cards make me sad I have a big box of worthless.
