@@caseywellington4761 I think they know pretty damn well in most cases, but banning a chase rare/mythic in a new set wouldn't keep people buying packs. People bitch about standard but (COVID aside) they kept playing it, so the financial incentive on WOTC is to ignore complaining and then ban cards shortly before rotation so they can pretend they listen.

Not to be confused with "Top 10 Plainswalkers", the far superior mechanic. It's great that we've seen this list thrice now. Especially since certain Planeswalkers see a tonne of play in Vintage. Speaking of, you should do "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)", although I would also accept "Top 10 Plainswalkers".

Pleasant kenobi did a video on Oko where actually a lot of the early impressions were that he was bonkers. He went looking to show nobody saw it coming but it turned out tons and tons of people did.

I was very high variance. I remember specifically one guy on reddit who got highly upvoted, claiming that Oko being played in an urza list was a mistake and a fluke. Those lists were the ones who went on to dominate the format with the help of Oko. I thought Oko was stronger than most people thought he was back then, and I still underestimated him.

Jace the Mind Sculptor is my favorite not only because he is by far the coolest and most iconic of all the planeswalkers imo but because my brother gave me his foil version of worldwake when i was very young. Since then i play Mtg.

You should also mention like Teferi, Jace's Standard banning got panned for coming way too late as well. He'd already been a $100+ Standard card & dominating the format for a a year and a half & only had several months before rotation.

I think that if we just look at the power level of cards, Oko is stronger then boogie man, which is why he was banned out of 4 formats

Oko is easily the strongest. There are even calls for him to be banned from Legacy. He just takes over the game against any deck that cares about the board, and is always the best thing you can be doing on the board.

W6 is an absolutely busted card, but it being rather new, coupled with the fact that it’s banned in the format it saw the most play, shows it can’t make this list. Which is crazy to think, because it’s definitely one of the best planeswalkers of all time

Also there have been a ton more Standard events than Modern/Legacy in the last couple of years (even ignoring the effect of the pandemic). If you look at the cards that are on the list, a strong Standard showing is basically mandatory to get on it, which rules out cards that aren't legal there.

During all these years watching and enjoying your videos I always thought of something that I never expressed before. It's about your ranking and points. Imo, legacy and vintage points should worth way more than standard and more than modern too. After all, those formats are way more powerful.

He says in every video "based on their historical performance at Magic's highest level of competition". Not based on their power. You could maybe even argue that Legacy and Vintage shouldn't be considered part of Magic's highest level of competition because they aren't Pro Tour formats.

As mentioned, it's about their performance in competitive Magic, not necessarily how "powerful" they are. Plus, cards played in Vintage and Legacy aren't necessarily powerful, but rather efficient. The cards that see play are often just the best cards with similar effects; i.e. Delver of Secrets is the most efficient one-drop; Bob (Dark Confidant) is the most efficient Bob; etc. Not to mention that how powerful a card is depends on the meta.

According to WotC sources, Oko's story is similar to Skullclamp. Original Oko could only elk your own stuff, and he only got the ability to elk other people's stuff later during development, and people just kept using him like they had for the past year or so of testing. So surprisingly, yeah, you're actually kind of right.

They also thought that putting 2 creatures rom your top 7 cards directly onto the battlefield at instant speed for 4 mana would only be used in gimmick decks if they limit the creatures to cmc 3 or less.

Yeah, T3feri and Hero were nasty. Oko being printed in between the two and Narset being thrown into the mix was all just poor release design... Not to mention Uro and then a land based set following up several land based ramp centric meta shifts... I LOVE ZNR, but I think it would've been better for the cards to see play further away from Nissa, Azusa, Lotus Cobra, Uro, Cultivate, and friends. Not that I don't like ramp lists, just that it was too much for one standard to deal with.

Have you ever thought about some commander top ten lists? It just feels like the top 10 would be completely different if you included commander. I get the scale you use, missing the commander format is the only flaw. Thanks for the content, always fun to watch!

I think measuring commander and competitive Magic are two very, very different things. You are right that the list would be different, but I don't think the two things should be combined in my analysis. It is apples and oranges.

Hi Nizzahon, I love this series and I wanted to ask a question... Are the lists influenced by the number of high-level tournaments that are held nowadays vs. in the past? I mean if there are more tournaments per year now doesn't allow cards to rack much highers counts now than cards from sets way back?

I brewed and played a BUG midrange deck in modern and had Liliana, the Last Hope as the planeswalker in the deck. Only creatures were Uro, Snappy, Goyf, and Confidant. No zombies. The ultimate still won the game every time I got it.

Every time he gets to Liliana, The Last Hope, he comments on how "mediocre" her ultimate is, when not in a zombie deck. I'm not sure if he has just never played with her in a superfriends/control deck setting, or what, but he is certainly undervaluing how quickly those free zombies every turn starts adding up, even without any initial zombies. I usually agree with what he has to say, but this is one card I feel like his take has been wrong all three times he has mentioned it on his lists.

I really feel like if they swapped Time Ravler's passive and +1 he would've been alot more fair still strong but at least you would be able to respond to someone dropping a teferi on the turn they play it

Still weirded out that people didn't realise how strong Oko was going to be. I remember scolding one of my students for thinking it wont perform well in limited (that was before the set got released) I remember telling him that they made a typo or something and that the Oko will not be released as it was spoiled. Guess we were both wrong..

Pretty crazy how T3feri was panned as "having been banned too late" despite Gideon having 40% more standard points. Just goes to show that the playerbase has changed, they simply demand more bans nowadays. Which makes perfect sense, considering with MTGA there's more standard magic being played then ever before, which means the standard meta needs to shift at a quicker pace to keep up.

Nah, Jace is only the second strongest Walker ever. The issue is that the actual number one has had virtually no opportunity to accrue points due to very quick bans in most formats. I was actually surprised to see that one even make the list, because sure, he made a lot of wind while he was legal, but i hadn't expected that to be enough points for the top ten.

i think that since the purpose of these lists is to rank cards based on their impact on competitive magic, cards should get a fairly large amount of points for getting banned. a card must have an astronomically huge impact on a format to get banned out of it, as evident with Oko sweeping 18 of 24 decks in one weekend.

I really wish you were actually the MTG version of Duel Logs, and explain why these cards are the best or broken or even just quickly read their effects (especially number 12 where you obscured the texts of the 2 cards) and what combos they help facilitate Consider the possibility that not all who watch you are MTG veterans

I have no idea what "Duel Logs" is. I do generally explain why the cards are the best or broken, and many people who aren't MTG veterans watch my videos and tell me they help. Now, in this particular video, I was intentionally very brief about the cards that didn't make the top 10, as spending an equal amount of time on those isn't really necessary. I don't read the card text because more people complain about the pace of these videos already, and given the medium, I don't think I need to read them all the time.

@@NizzahonMagic Yeah when I switched to another video I noticed that you do explain them cards a bit more in other videos...so my comment isn't fully accurate As for Duel Logs, well I found your channel after someone dropped your name as the "MTG version" of him... he's a Yugituber who does top 10 lists on Yu-Gi-Oh He's known for always explaining every card he mentions because he always takes into consideration noobs and other card game players...and sometimes he gets criticism because of that, and me being a veteran Yu-Gi-Oh player I can see why, but jumping into MTG i can see why he needed to explain in detail why some cards are broken Though obviously some cards don't need explanation like "Draw 3 cards" for 2 mana, or take an extra turn for 2 mana....but for example the first planewalker you mentioned here, I didn't know whether his good effects are offset by his 8 mana or not...cause being an amateur I don't know how fast some decks can get to 8 or can have him in their hands

I still do worst videos -- not sure why the playlist is saying the last video is more than three years old. Some of the videos are much newer (Like BAD Cards in Great Cycles, which is from a few weeks ago).

I still go back and rewatch MtGAids's video on Sultai Oko before it hit standard just to watch it completely crush 5 out of 5 of the top meta standard decks in the format weeks before the card was actually released. I made so much money on selling Okos prior to the ban...

I actually think Oko is techinically stronger than Jayce, but he got banned out of every single format he was legal in thankfully besides like Legacy. Had he gone the same path as Jayce, I think he would have probably reached the top of the list. Anyone remember when even mono-red burn in Modern was playing Oko? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
