Definitely an underrated card, and often "slept" on. (Check out the art and artist for both Spinerock Knoll and Knollspime Dragon if you haven't seen it before, they are designed for one another and it's super awesome! Also, library of Alexandria isn't legendary despite it being a reall-ass place that actually exists. Magic is weird sometimes.
@kyoken86914 жыл бұрын
@@jackpabich763 they should be legendary, but aren't for gameplay reasons. Valakut on the other hand doesn't have that excuse. I mean you would think that recurring 3 damage landfall (mountainfall) trigger would be overpowered if you have multiple copies when we have tons of cards that can just ramp to oblivion and beyond.
@jackpabich7634 жыл бұрын
@@kyoken8691 It's the exact opposite, actually. Back when Valakut was printed, the legendary rule stated that only 1 legendary permanent of that name could be on the battlefield. Now it's each player can only have one. Meaning the castle cycle should 100% be legendary.
@09Dragonite3 жыл бұрын
@@jackpabich763 regardless of whether or not castles should be legendary, Valakut was a specific location in the game and simultaneously has an ability unique unto itself that has proved to be mechanically incredibly powerful. It was designed for a rotating format that wanted deck lists to be able to focus on lands in a land based set without them removing one another, but it was never tested for other possible formats because extended was still a growing format and it was retired about 4 years after the release of Zendikar in favor of a new growing format, modern. During the shift between formats and the primary focus on balancing standard (which had its own issues at the time) Valakut sort of slipped through the cracks for a long time. It makes much more sense now mechanically to have erratad the card to be legendary because of the Legendary Rule change, but hindsight is 20/20 and WotC doesn't like rewriting card abilities and interactions unless it is absolutely necessary (such as Companion). Truth be told, there are a TON of busted cards that slip through standard's "balancing" mechanically, and another land that fits this mold is Field of the Dead. There was no logical reason beneficial to gameplay mechanics to allow multiple copies of that card to see play simultaneously under one person's control, except for flavor purposes because FotD wasn't a named location. In totality, I agree that the castles ought to have been legendary in some respect, but they are in no way as harmful to any meta as Valakut or FotD have been in the past year(s). When creating a game, mechanical design should ALWAYS come first. When the mechanics suffer, the game suffers.

Will you do two-color lands too in this series? I'm really curious which dual lands are the best.
@1norwood14 жыл бұрын
One of the blue dual lands would win I'd guess Tundra, maybe Underground Sea. Those have been seeing play since Magic came out. I think the top 4 would be the 4 blue dual lands and next most popular land would be maybe Taiga (because of kird ape and all the zoo decks which have been around forever). Hard for more recent dual lands (which only see play in limited formats) to compete with that much history a lot of the dual lands only see play in one standard format and then they rotate. I think lands that tap for more than 2 colours would be way more interesting my guess is Reflecting Pool would be most common maybe Undiscovered Paradise (which used to see a lot of play in Dredge) Cavern of Souls might eke in. Edit forgot City of Brass - that would be no 1.
