SPOILER: Obviously, I made this before Splinter Twin got unbanned earlier this week - now Kiki-Jiki has even more potential to gain more points!

So 5 mana 2/2s are SO much better than 9 mana 5/5s huh? None of these even had Rampage 4.

Only Cloudblazer and the Phoenix are OG 5mana 2/2 from the list, but yeah. Essentially the card needs to generate major card advantage in some form or not really be 2/2 worth of stats or have an alternative cost.

Acidic Slime Shard Phoenix Karmic Guide Cloudblazer are all played straight cost 5 are 2/2 Mulldrifter costs less, Siege Gang is bigger, Kiki Jiki is Kiki Jiki.
@gakk8658

Worth noting on Shard Phoenix, it existed and was played at a time where damage was on the stack. This meant that you could block with it, put it's two damage on the creature it was blocking, and then sacrifice it to do 4 total damage to the creature, making it a lot easier to turn into a recurring boardwipe. From the timespan in the entry it was still played after the rules were changed, but during that time it was a very, very powerful creature given the state of the game.

Yup. Counter Phoenix (control deck that had burn as win con) was thing back in day because of that.

Small additional insight on the Reveillark deck: The deck was only in Azorius colors and didn't run Makeshift Mannequin; instead it used Body Double to copy Reveillark from the graveyard. The deck also used cards such as Aven Riftwatcher to get out of range of the common Bogardan Hellkite OTK aka, "Dragonstorm" which was very popular at the time, while also stalling decks like Narcodredge with cards like Wrath of God and Cryptic Command. The original deck also ran Ponder before it was banned. It also ran 2 copies of Venser, Shaper Savant as an optional replacement for Riftwing Cloudskate and as a free counterspell mid-combo since Venser could target Spells in addition to permanents. The main concept of the deck was to get 2 Body Doubles and either Riftwing Cloudskate or Venser in the graveyard, with Mirror Entity on the field, then cast Reveillark, and then pay 0 for Mirror Entity's effect infinite times. Reveillark would then grab 2 Body Doubles, for the first resolution, which would both become Reveillark. Thereafter, you'd grab Cloudskate/Venser, 2 Body Doubles as Reveillark clones, and 1 other card of your choice except Reveillark. Usually Mulldrifter or Aven Riftwatcher. Cloudskate/Venser would return your opponent's entire board (including lands) to their hand, then you'd slowly whittle them down with raw combat damage. There was a single infinite life-gain deck running around at the time so the deck also sideboarded 1 copy of Mudbutton Torchrunner for an infinite damage backup plan as long as you could discard it somehow. At the end of the combo, you'd grab Mirror Entity and Body Double just in case they wanted to try anything sneaky. Once all the pieces are in place, there is exactly 1 card that can stop this combo. I won't say what it is so don't bother asking. Also, as a hidden tech; the deck ran 1 copy of Tideshaper Mystic which functioned as both a 1-drop, and a way to prevent opponents from casting their 2-drop on curve, which helped against aggro and combo decks. Dread Return and Golgari Grave Troll were also both legal around this time. Also Supreme Verdict didn't exist yet or the deck would probably have ran it.

There 100% were Reveillark decks that ran Makeshift Mannequin in Block, Standard, and Extended. It may not have been the norm, but the existed and did well at some major events.

1-10: Island
@darthparallax5207
@darthparallax5207 Ай бұрын
1. Mountain was good because it was the first viable mono colored deck. 2. Swamp could play Dark Ritual which made a poor man's Black Lotus. 3. Island has a lot of uses. 4. Snow Covered Swamp is just really flavorful with Lim Dul. 5. Wastes can be used to summon Eldrazi which is sometimes all you need. 6. Forests can be used for any mana dork but so can City of Brass. 7. Plains is good in Old School. 8. Snow Covered Island has the best art. 9. Full art Zendikar or Unhinged Island is probably the most common bling. 10. Snow Covered Mountain is the best to alter the art to the Beacons of Gondor.

Maybe the reason that Design sometimes releases ridiculously pushed cards in newer sets is precisely to buff the usability of earlier sets' coolest coasters. It's just that this also pushes newer cards over the edge right away but they weren't looking at those too closely. One day they will print a new card whose only purpose is to make the Leviathan template completely upside and I hope the community will not call for it to be banned regardless of its meta effect.
