While I have Planeswalker deck cards on the mind, my favorite fun fact about the specific tutor cards that they come with is that exactly one of them, Niambi, Faithful Healer, is a legendary creature, which means that you can run her as your commander in order to get her dad, Teferi, Timebender, whose ultimate is a Time Warp, and you basically get him in the command zone which means it's actually somewhat easy to set up an infinite turn combo with the card

Wizards: We made the Planeswalker deck Planeswalkers fun and flavorful but not pushed for tournament play. They're meant to be expensive to cast. Konami: Screw it! Let's give the kids an amazing card that has more words than they can understand. Slap that as the face of a starter/structure deck and sell it out to beginners. Even if I replace Endymion, the Mighty Master of Magic with Topologic Zeroboros (which has a closer release date to Mu Yanling, Celestial Wind), the latter is still a rather powerful and wordy card.

Yu-Gi-Oh starter/structure decks are often very good. Domain monarchs won us nationals and it was basically just 3 structure decks. Salamangreat structure deck was also really good

I've actually been wanting to put Nissa, Genesis Mage in my Marwyn, the Nurturer deck for a long while now. (That deck already has Who Shakes the World, Vital Force, and Worldwaker, btw.) But Genesis Mage is hard to come by in shops around my area. In a Marwyn deck, high mana spells like Genesis Mage are no problem to cast at all and Genesis Mage could also contribute to the untapping shenanigans that Marwyn decks tend to do. But after seeing this video, I see now how underpowered Genesis Mage actually is. I might still add it to my deck someday if I ever find one just for the feeling of trying to make the underdog Nissa actually prove herself to be good enough to stand together with the other more popular Nissas.

I feel like Marwyn is the only deck she really works in, especially if you have a Marwyn semi storm type build with lots of untaps, buffs and draw equal to power cards since she can both buff by a lot or untap depending on what you need

I think another thing to point out about the deck walkers is that they all (at least that I am aware of) had cards in the deck that could tutor them up. They were typically over costed creatures, but they could also get the walkers from your graveyard too. This doesn't exactly make the walkers good, but it is something they have going for them that other walkers don't which imo makes it a smart thing that they aren't very pushed.

That's the reason I bought every planeswalker deck: They contained cards, including a foil walker, that weren't available in boosters. Even though those cards were terrible, the completionist in me made me get them all. Also, I figured that eventually Wizards would screw up and print one that was completely broken. I was wrong about that.

Tibalt is really good.... Really good when used in a Super Friends Sarkhan the Masterless deck that floods the board with cheap low cost Planeswalkers and then uses them to swing in as 4/4 Dragons. 2 mana Tibalt / 3 Mana Tibalt / both 3 Mana Chandra's / 3 Mana Sarkhan and loads of board wipes.. =)

This gives me flashbacks to the summer where I deliberately tried to make a Tibalt Deck work - knowing that he was terrible. After months of work, I built a deck with a Casual win rate of 31%! LOL! I was impressed I managed to get it that high!

I put Rowan, Fearless Sparkmage into an Ashling deck that leans heavily on red walkers to hold a board presence after repeatedly burning everything to the ground. Turns out she's not bad with Heart of Kiran.

Also, you need to think about when you cast a 6 mana planeswalker. As someone who mainly plays 60 card kitchen table magic, and owns every planeswalker on the list, I am never casting one of these without a board presence. It is always about context in what deck you put them in and the synergy they add to your deck. My son and I have over 835 decks from Edh, 60 card and pauper that include most of the planeswalker's ever made. Have fun with each of their powers and build around them accordingly. Each of these planeswalker's in their own right can be powerful. Thanks for the video. Always great content.

These are all terrible but the list feels totally out of order. Specifically how is Jace so much better than Teferi? Same cost same +1 but Teferi has a removal option. Other items feel out of place but that was the one that was bugging me. Separate note: I think the reason Liliana is over represented in EDH is because of Doubling Season Decks.

I think that the idea of strong cards in a 10 worst list is very interesting like if you were to do a top 10 worst cards to get ban you will probably get cards like "Divide by zero" which is not a bad card but he only really saw success in a specific format

I know you don't go by straight EDHREC, but Domri, City Smasher definitely deserves its low score of under 300 decks. The plus ability is "what if you wanted to pay 2 more for Sarkhan Vol", the -3 leaves you 1 loyalty away from having cast a six-mana Lightning Bolt, and the ultimate is essentially Overrun with a twist that you hope never comes up. I have to assume he just missed the cut somehow.

Nissa while not good by any means isn't terrible either in my opinion: 7 mana aren't so much to ask for a green deck, and her +2 basically reduce her cost to 5 by untapping two lands the turn you cast her (and if you used some mana dorks she can untap, the cost reduction is even greater), and it is value she can generate each turn. Liliana is really expensive in terms of CMC, I can only see her being somewhat effective in a Yawgmoth or Atraxa deck, but even then there's so much more it could be cast instead for that mana (like her great 6 CMC version as Dreadhorde General, if ones really wants to play a Lily).

As someone who has tried her in a Scorpion God EDH deck I can agree oh how terrible Death Wielder is. Even if she has a tutor card that puts minus one counters on all your opponent's creatures there are many better cards to play instead of those two. Seven mana is just way too high for what she does even if you have a proliferate engine.

Just came across this and all the Planeswalker deck planeswalkers really reminds me of how bad they are. That most of them also have two very underwhelming "rares" to find that planeswalker certainly doesn't help them especially if/when you could find a different planeswalker with the same name for a lower mana value. If you take a look at the deck Mu Yanling was in it wasn't as bad but if you took out the given walker and its tutors and put in three copies of the "regular" version of her it becomes a bit scary. A funny thing about some of those cards is just how much they cost in part because the only way to get them was from the Planeswalker decks. It might be interesting to see the BEST walkers that have come out of those decks.

Nissa genesis mage is obviously not a good card, but it does have a home in Ashaya, the +2 untaps 4 creatures that you will always have a use for. Still, Garruk Wildspeaker and Nissa world speaker are far better at it

I would say Teferi, Timeless Voyager is almost strictly better than Garruk, and they should swap places. Strictly better +1, debatably better -3 removal, and the ult does essentially the same thing (getting ur creatures through to damage) but with more versatility.

There are some decent PW Deck walkers out there. I like my Ajani and Elspeth. They're not super strong but they do a decent bit on their own and a lot when you have a board, which white almost always does.

I think you need to get into what makes a planeswalker deck planeswalker playable in EDH. Planeswalker deck planeswalkers often have awful 1st and 2nd abilities but their Ult is still often powerful. This means that they are viable if their starting loyalty is equal to half or more the loyalty needed to ult. This is because these walkers can ult straight away with doubling season or deepglow skate. If that isn't true, the ult is pointless even if it said "win the game". Without outlining this framework, I think you can misunderstand what makes a planeswalker playable in EDH and as a result I think your ordering is slightly wrong.

Keep in mind, planeswalkers are the main card type that scales poorly to commander. "Value" planeswalkers that are good in 1x1 are often pretty bad in commander as there are more players to attack into them and they are mostly destroyed immediately. Pillowfort cards like propaganda often fail to protect them.

For example, Nissa is clearly better than Sorin. A Vampire deck probably isn't running the doublers I mentioned above, whereas a green deck running Nissa might well be and might be heavy on creatures with counters too that the ability can hit. I would also say the Liliana on the list is definitely also better than Sorin and both of these cards are better than Tibalt.

She's not good, definitely, but the deck she came with was completely bursting with dinosaurs, and they were one of the four tribes that were heavily pushed in Ixalan block. Also, if your dinosaur deck doesn't have a dinosaur in play by the time you get to six mana, you're going to lose anyway.

Said that, if I really had to play one of them, I'd still prefer any of them over the 2 mana tibalt that is pure downside; His only use could be delirium/tarmogoyf stuff, And even for that there are more efficient planeswalkers.

Top 10 worst and best Planeswalker from structure decks

While it's cool you're taking inspiration from Commander in your Worst or other subjective lists, I just want to finally say I would prefer if you keep edhrec data out of mixing with tournament data to determine Best or other objective lists. Anecdotal information about a card's usage outside tournament could be entertaining, but don't let it skew results. EDHrec is a super great source of information, but the data it compiles is only out of theorycrafted decks, with no way to determine if a deck actually gets played or not, or way to see brewed decks if their masters don't create a decklist somewhere. On top of that, the data it has only shows what's included, not necessarily what's good. There are a lot of objectively great cards that are mechanically powerful but many people or groups don't play them for one reason or another. Also, cards that don't actually combo with a strategy are sometimes included because enough people mistakenly think it does (coin flipping cards for example, some care about landing heads or tails, others care about winning a flip, and they don't actually synergize as well as some people think). Commander is just an entirely different beast than tournament play, and they're worth separating and not getting badly intermingled. Commander is the only game type I play apart from drafts 2-3 times a year, and your look at tournament data is interesting and I try never to miss a video. I think you're my only source of non-Commander content I regularly enjoy. I get plenty of peanut butter elsewhere, please give me some plain chocolate. :)

Would you consider Teyo, Aegis Adept or Kiora, Tide's Fury as competitive for this list? I'd argue they see the LEAST play of any planeswalkers, because they have never been legal anywhere but Historic and Historic Brawl, and are unplayably bad in both.

I think you should consider cost in your analysis. E.g. Sorin is $11. That is not a bulk price so he is used enough. There is an $8 and a couple of $5 cards too. It's not like they are alpha's where there is collector impact. I have bought $1 Lilly cards too so even if they are popular characters that doesn't explain the price. And price = popularity.

They have their price precisely because of collectors. They only appeared in one product - Planeswalker decks. So they are kind of rare.

@@kennethmurray9003 No. People just like to have every card. Wood Elemental is one of the worst cards ever and it isn't cheap. How good a card is does impact it's price, but rarity does too.

Not sure garruk belongs on this list. Card draw, even if it’s situational, isn’t the worst +1 and the removal is actually pretty consistent in a stompy deck. I don’t think it’s good, I just think its relatively okay removal and not actively detrimental to you +1 should put it at least in a higher spot

In a blue-green ramp, you can play Mu on turn 3. On turn 6, you can have a couple of 6/6 or 7/7 flying creatures. Is this bad?

For a ramp deck, yes. It is pretty bad. You can have her and those 2-3 flyers, or you can have upwards of 12 bodies that are 8/8 or better. Especially in UG ramp decks.

Jace(Guildpact) is good in certain decks, just for his +1. Tibalt(og), is fantastic fun in a chaos/madness or reanimator deck, though he is trash elsewhere. Sorin is trash, and I have no defense for him. Like, outside of his deck, he is so underpowered its embarrassing. Even in his deck he isn't good. I guess in superfriends he can be fun, for the control, but that requires a critical mass of vampires in an archetype that doesn't run many creatures at all. Nissa's +2 can easily refund her cost in edh, though only if you build around her, so she isn't really good. Jace(strategist) is trash and should've never been printed. Garruk has utility in a decent creature deck, but nothing great. Rowan is just a worse version of her other card. Liliana is great cause she's a Liliana. I'm biased towards my favorite Planeswalker. Teferi is...kinda okay, but not good. Theoretically he could be good, but his cost makes him prohibitive. Mu isn't great, however, she is bloody brilliant in my partner flying deck. In any other situation she is absolute trash.

Idk, I still think Tibalt deserves its shitty spot. It has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and even the bad PW deck walkers had some usable abilities sometimes. Tibalt is so unlikely to even gain the use of it's own second ability, you're really paying RR to discard a card at random and hope it wasn't useless. People play it as a meme, not because it has any legitimate utility or function.

I wouldn't have out Rowan that high (low?). Like the rest she costs too much but all her abilities are decent. If she was one mana less I would happily play her in few different Meta-games I've seen. But I wouldn't say that about any of the others.
