Technically, Heroism forces the player to pay 2R for each attacking creature. Red aggro is unlikely to have that much mana to spare to get all of their creatures through, so at least in one specific and decently common matchup, Heroism does do something. Of course, you could just run Ghostly Prison, which has no color restriction and doesn't require you to sacrifice a creature. But if this card wasn't limited to only red matchups and was just "sacrifice a creature: for each attacking creature, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by that creature this turn unless its controller pays 3" it wouldn't have been half bad. I'm kinda surprised we don't see more of these sacrifice outlets in white, considering that "dying for the greater good" should be very on brand for the color

Is it the classic 1/1 green elf? White human? Perhaps it's those devil tokens from various newer sets? Is it Marit Lage? Or a 2/2 goblin that creates a treasure on the attack just because of one broken saga?! I think it's a cool idea if you're digging it.

My favorite thing about the landwalk hate cycle is that the white one is so much worse than the others that it probably deserves the spot by itself. After all, it makes up 10% of all black-bordered cards that say "plainswalk" on it.
@GreenLuthor Жыл бұрын
Although I can't argue with the #1 choice, I feel like Great Wall deserves its own special mention separate from the other four. At least islandwalk, forestwalk, swampwalk, and mountainwalk appeared on cards printed before Legends. Plainswalk didn't appear on ANY cards prior to Legends (the same set as Great Wall), and it only was given to a single card even there. (I think there's... what, maybe six cards IN TOTAL with plainswalk by this point?) (It almost feels like they came up with the cycle, then realized Great Wall did nothing at all, so threw together a plainswalk card just to say there was one in the game.) Yeah, all five are pretty useless, but the one that could only affect a single card that no one ever played anyway was far and away the worst of the worst there. Great Wall had basically zero use without a Magical Hack, and you could probably find a MUCH better use for the Hack. (Like, using it on ANYTHING else.)
@franzise3605 Жыл бұрын
Four creatures with natural plainswalk actually; Righteous Avengers from Legends (a 3/1 for 5), Graceful Antelope from Odyssey (1/4 for 4 that could make your opponents' lands Plains when it dealt combat damage), Boggart Arsonists from Shadowmoor (2/1 for 3 that could sac to destroy a Plains or Scarecrow), and Zodiac Rooster from Three Kingdoms (2/1 for 2, the closest I'd consider to being 'playable') There's also Old Fogey from Unhinged that had snow-covered plainswalk and Aysen Highway, an enchantment from Homelands that could give all white creatures plainswalk... but it costs 6 mana, so. Yeah Great Wall is pretty wretched.

Just imagine. You're playing a red beatdown deck with dragons and large lads and whatnot, and your opponent, playing Mardu aristocrats, just pops out this thing. What are you going to do? Attack with your team? lmao you idiot figure out who you are paying for, and whether or not they'll just do it again after you're done paying lol. Just one large idiot you can pay for? Congrats, they just prevented you from attacking them with some to most of your team with a janky, 25 cent ghostly prison. While yeah, it probably isn't as scary as a goblin bombardment (...most of the time), comparing heroism to goblin bombardment is more favorable than a 1/2 merfolk that's unusually "good" at not dying to blockers to goblin bombardment (or merfolk of the pearl trident tbh), so it has that going for it. +Hey, even if you aren't playing red, if there is someone else other than the heroism player playing red, only one of you two between you and the heroism player will likely have an enchantment that taxes them, if you ignore potential spite from said red player from the equation. tldr. Yeah it's bad, but in a token deck against red decks, the red player will soon figure out who is not worth attacking. A 3 mana 1/2 isn't coming close to that niche value (just play pearl trident, you'll be fine without that 2nd toughness)
@eqqaia3856 Жыл бұрын
Idk, it only affects attacking red crearures. Even with the 2R tax, its pretty bad if your opponent doesnt play any red creatures. Also, i hate if my opponent gets the choice, but i MUST sac a creature to activate heroism.
@therealHLY Жыл бұрын
not really. your still sacking a creature for a fog effect, in a colour that has next to no sacrifice payoffs, and a lot of better, cheaper fogs. the 'best' case scenario is you go down a creature to stop damage... which you can also do without the enchantment. its called blocking. and it only fogs red creatures, so it only protects you from mono-red aggro. it's also telegraped, unlike most fogs, so your opponent can see it and know how to play around it, and it's trying to hose *red*, the colour that's best at pinging your smaller creatures, meaning the card your gonna have to sacrifice to use it is probably going to be more than a 1/1... and then, after all those downsides, they can just pay to ignore it anyway fog, on the other hand, is a 1 mana spell that prevents all combat damage. from everything. with no way out. and costs 1/3 the cost of heroism before the sacrifice. be real, how many times have you fogged in one game? the 'repeatable' side doesn't help much when its still damaging your board and only buying time. a fogs good when you need just one more turn. paying an excessive amount for a bad fog just because it can be used more than once does not make the cards functionality better the worst case scenario is you play heroism and your opponent says 'I'm playing , dingbat'. or they're playing red/black, or red/blue. or red/white, and just hit you with the other half... and still pay for their red card to hit you. the medium fail case scenario is they just pay some mana and their scary creature still smacks into you, meaning you need to block again, meaning you 2 for 1'd yourself or just sacrificed for nothing if it was a black/red mana card and thus gonna be played in decks with sacrifice payoff, then maybe you can make the argument. it's still a terrible sacrifice engine, but it at least might have synergy there. but it costs white mana, and demands white sacrifices. to do an awful imitation of a 1 mana bulk instant
@rajamicitrenti1374 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that does make it a lot better, and according to the Oracle text, that is correct. Still not good, but I do feel it makes it too good to warrant being on this list. Sac 1 creature in White (which frequently does go-wide strategies) for a lopsided Fog that your opponent can negate for 2R for each creature? If they don't pay, you can get favorable blocks on all their creatures and likely kill multiple of theirs without them killing any of your creatures, or they get 1 creature that can damage and you just let that one through and kill multiple others for free but then they don't have much if any mana to improve their board. Only useful in some decks, and only useful against Mono Red Aggro, so who is going to actually run it? But it has its niche that its actively pretty decent in.

You slightly misunderstood heroism. The opponent must pay 2R for EACH attacking red creature they want to deal damage. Meaning if they were attacking with ten 1/1 goblins, they'd need to pay 20RRRRRRRRRR. Paying just 2R would allow only one goblin to deal damage and the other 9 would deal none. But wait, any individual white creature you sac reapplies that effect to ALL attacking red creatures, so if you sac two white creatures they now need to pay a total of 40RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Also I think any free sac outlet under 4 mana should be barred from any worst lists regardless of color. If nothing else they're good budget options and can provide redundancy

The other place it might be useful if against those cards that would let you search up all of the other copies of that card top put into your hand such as Squadron Hawk; you can even see them add the three cards with the same name to their hand to know this will hit but the problem of course is just how many such effects are there to hate on. Should add that most of the Shrines in fact do not help your opponent, because they're meant to punish people for casting their second-on copies. Their problem is not being symmetrical, it's being meaninglessly narrow.

Before finishing, my prediction is Ignoble Soldier is somewhere high in the list... maybe #2 - #1 Edit: It didn't even make it??? Damn... these cards are horrid! I guess having a beefy ATK and can STILL trade (albeit you have to go through hoops to do it) helped keep it out... Edit 2: I also thought Indentured Djinn would make this list. It is a UU1 4/4 Flying creature that gave Ancestral Recall to all other players. It's good for multiplayer, sure, but in single player? Your opponent probably got something much better than that 4/4 flier with the 3 cards he got from you... AND he gets to be able to use some or all of it before the Djinn could even attack Also, to give Common Cause some credit, the deck I ran it in before was a mono-white aggro. I would play it on turn 4 - 5 ... and by that time I have at least 2 - 3 creatures more than my opponent. All my creatures have some sort of ability that makes my opponent's life harder, like 1st strike, protection from a color etc. which makes it disadvantageous for him to block... but he has to or he takes +2 damage for each creature he lets through. Also, i would usually have other Anthem effects in the field like Glorious Anthem Obviously, I;m not saying it's good... and I ended up dropping it for a set of Anthems in my deck... but its got SOME use compared to many of the other cards in the list

I don't know about Common Cause being number 4. With any post board wipes in a white or combo'd white colored deck where you have the sole creatures and can make sure they're mono colored after the wipe could use it. It's mana intensive and niche to combo with, but far more useful than any other card on the list at least. Edit: removed brainfart mite idea. Thanks ANBU.
@xxANBUxx Жыл бұрын
Mites are artifact creatures lol.
@danhostetler1423 Жыл бұрын
@@xxANBUxx you're right, I forgot that it's non-artifact creatures and all mite tokens are artifact creatures. But a player can still board wipe with a teferi's protection and keep their board or command the dreadhorde up a mono colored army or foretell a doomskar and drop nevinyrral urborg tyrant and the zombies would all share black with him so they'd get +2/+2. Your board just has to have 1 common color not all the exact same color and something like painter's servant forces the entire board globally to have a common color. So while I was mistaken on the mites, the point is that Common Cause is far less useless than the rest of the cards on the list and have some combo'd effects to give it a mildly niche but viable life in a few decks. So being on the list and even up at number 4 seems out of place.

These worst card lists have been getting better lately. Only thing I'd say is about Trip Wire - if you replace horsemanship with flying which is significantly better then you're left paying Vindicate mana for much, much worse targeting and I think that's enough to make the list anyway, it being horsemanship instead is enough to make the high end of the list.
@magicalgirlanime Жыл бұрын
I think depending on the standard that Trip Wire-but-flying might actually see niche play in mono green.

Flowstone Armor is pretty terrible, but it’s a really cool historical footnote as a precursor to Equipment. I’m kinda surprised they didn’t just keep that design. It works.

Common Cause doesn't deserve to be on this list. It's bad, but it COULD be useful in a control deck that's good at keeping your opponent's cards off the board. Again, absolutely a bad card, but not "worst 10" territory.

I don't think that common cause deserved it's spot. There area lot of decks out there that play zero or very few non-artifact creatures. against some decks, it's twice as powerful and easier to cast, compared to glorious anthem... which is bad, but not the worst :)
@NizzahonMagic Жыл бұрын
I don't think you are reading it right. It checks your opponent's creatures too and you have no control over them. So it usually does nothing.
@elkraft1046 Жыл бұрын
@@NizzahonMagic I understand :) but if your opponent is playing few or no creatures, like some decks do, it is a powerful effect for three mana. It could be considered for a mono-white deck that like to go wide. Like white weenies. I'm not saying the card belongs in a world-class deck, but at least this can be powerful under some circumstances, unlike some of the other cards ;) Zero control over your opponents creatures is a bit much, removal is always an option :D

Feels like those shrines should be typed as shrines and the old template equipment templates as equipment. Having relevant types would at least make them a bit more interesting as casual pet cards and matches the retrospective updates we see for creature types.

Much like your most expensive card series, this list should have been restricted to one representative per set as power creep assured all of the cards mentioned were from the distant passed, when commander didn't exist and the only format close to it was highlander and that was a fringe play style even then.
