You have Doubling Season and Calix with 2 counters. You make a token copy of Doubling Season. Instead you make 2 tokens. These enter play, triggering Calix twice. Calix adds 2^3 = 8 counters for each Doubling Season, so adds 16 counters (total 18 counters) You again make a token copy of Doubling Season. This makes 8 tokens that copy Doubling Season instead, putting you up to 11 total Doubling Seasons. This triggers Calix 8 times, each one adding 2^11 = 2,048 counters on Calix, for a total of 18 + 2,048x8 = 8,210 counters on Calix. In your madness and lust for power, you again make a token copy of Doubling Season. This makes 2,048 token copies of Doubling Season instead, putting you up to 2,059 total Doubling Seasons. This triggers Calix 2,048 times, each one adding 2^2,059 counters on Calix. The total number of counters added to Calix by these triggers amounts to 2^2,070, which is a 623-digit number (~1.35 x 10^623), which renders the initial 8,210 counters that were on it a rounding error at best. That is to say, Calix would have more than one hundred billion trillion googol googol googol googol googol googol counters on it, solely from Doubling Season tokens entering play. Each additional enchantment that enters the battlefield would add another 2^2,059 (or ~6.6 x 10^619) counters to Calix.

It makes somewhat less tokens thanks to Arena's token cap, but you still go into absurdity, there is just no other answer, the counters that will drop are enough to make Calix able to kill everything all at once Where was this when the Eldrazi and Phyrexians were causing disasters?

To put this in perspective, if you multiply the age of the universe in seconds times the number of atoms in the universe, you get ~5x10^97. So, if everyone second that passed in our universe resulted in the creation of another, identical universe, then the total number of atoms in all of those universes would only be -1/30th of the counters out onto Calix

250 DS in play which would means all tokens and all counters produced, assuming the counter or token generated is 1, would be whatever 2^250 is which is a number big enough that calculators only show it in scientific notation by default. There is a Wikipedia article that shows 2^n numbers and they already get insane well before n reaches 100. To give a taste, 2^258 is 115,792,089,237,316,195,423,570,985,008,687,907,853,269,984,665,640,564,039,457,584,007,913,129,639,936 This is also the number of unique keys for the AES-256 bit encryption standard.

Phil, I had to come here and say that I love this deck. Enough so in fact that I built it on Arena (after decided to re-install it more or less just to draft whenever an interesting set is available). It's been a blast, kind of hilarious, and I wanted to share with you a really sweet game I played with it (and really wish I'd recorded): I ended up matched up against a Shrine deck. I didn't see a Calix until late, and still haven't seen the Doubling Season, but just one copy of the Three Blind Mice from Mythos of Illuna got me there. The best part is the game was super close--they were one turn away from draining me to death when they finally conceded to the triggers of some 18 or so copies of Three Blind Mice.

WHAT? Sparky can concede? :O. Phil is always teaching us something new hahaha. That saga was meant to be broken and I love it. It's great that we're getting more unique/weird sagas like that, the princess takes flight and sorceror's apprentice ones (with a "bad" last chapter), read ahead, kamigawa saga->creatures, etc. I actually would love to see something like that for standard (a bit more serious of a deck, but still janky? Maybe that would encroach more on Seth's style of videos, but I'd watch both of you play it even if it's 100% the same deck tbh). Maybe BW Braids? UR with some bounce spell for the last chapter?

Scrollshift or otherwise destroy your Princess Takes Flight while it's in the first or second stage. It doesn't work like other jail cards, so the tucked creature is just exiled forever. It's extra funny when my opponent destroys it in response to the exile, and they watch their card sail past their battlefield into the exile zone, and there's just this moment of "whuh" before I play another one and two scrollshifts to exile their whole board

I have an EDH Myriim deck dedicated to Doubling Season/Parallel Lives. The schtick is the same: copy the doublers a few times, flood the board with dragons. I actually was able to come up with a formula for calculating how many tokens to make, I'm sure I'm not the first, but since it's on topic ... X * (2^n), where X is the number of tokens/counters you are making by effect, and n is the number of doublers you have.

I am just going to round some numbers here: 2 ^ 10 = 1024, let's estimate it as 1000 = 10 ^ 3. Now you got like 240 DS on the board, so 2 ^ 240 = (2 ^ 10) ^ 24 which, going by the estimate above, is (10 ^ 3) ^ 24 = 10 ^ 72. The real number is probably a couple of oders of magnitude higher, so we can say it's significantly more than a number with 72 digits. Just to give a ballpark: the number of atoms in our galaxy is estimated as 2.4 × 10 ^ 67 and the number of atoms in the known universe is estimated to be between 10 ^ 78 and 10 ^ 82. So we are looking at somewhere in the region of "the number of atoms in the universe" amount of counters on those mice. I am not surprised that Arena decided not to calculate that.

So, 2^10 is 1024. If we just round this to 1000, 2^242 is gonna be about 10^73, or 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000. Actually, going through with my calculator and being a little more careful, it says that it's actually 7.067e72, so our 10^73 estimate was only a little bit of an overestimate. I think Arena uses ints, maybe doubles, for everything, and that number is just too big for a double (which is a 64 bit integer, meaning it can't get bigger than 2^63 if it's signed, 2^64 if it's unsigned).
@dascandy
@dascandy 11 ай бұрын
That number would easily fit a double. It would lose a lot of accuracy though, so no online game uses it for these things. Look around for Blizzard's online game & people overflowing it there; they used 32-bit signed ints so as soon as you got your toughness over 2.147 billion, it'd be negative and it would die as a state-based effect. Or whatever their game calls it.

I know there's a long-standing issue where the timer is server-side but the lag from big stacks resolving is client-side, so you can get timed out even from the opponent's triggers if the stack is big enough. There's a workaround where you can close and reopen the client to clear the stack if you just need everything to resolve.

As always BK with the best arena videos! I saw Seth's comments on your videos and why they take so long, can't rush perfection!

Ah, Calix! My favorite commander currently on Arena. Game plan with him is just lockdown with stuff like Borrowed Time, or flooding the board with Cathar's Call and Doubling Season/Annointed Procession.

This kind of deck is why I run any version of “remove a card from your opponents hand” my color combo have access too. I’m not risking a turn 3/4 chain combo if I can avoid it.

Did this in wilds of eldraine two headed prerelease. We had three copies of yenna, two copied of three blind mice, a defense of the heart and a moonshaker cavalry.

I was hit by something like this. The catalyst for it was some half green legendary chick who could copy an enchantmet and make an exact token copy and the blind mice in the third stage would copy the blind mice token and start the mice from scratch
