Great video. I like the more accurate “retro” looking new trailers also. FYI you had it right the first time . The fifth wheel is what connects the trailer to the truck. Those little front “legs” on the trailer are called landing gear.

OK. Now that you say that, I was right because the “fifth wheel” is what the trailer hooks up to on the back of the truck. Thanks for pointing that out.

I like both of them! Each is probably more specific to a railroad and trailer owner. Newer flat cars would have been the steel diamond plate or grating. Many railroads updated older flatcars for trailer service. You did a nice job reviewing the differences in the flatcars and trailers. Thanks and enjoy!

You were correct on the fifth wheel, thats what its called! The wheels on the trailer are called landng gear, Old trailers had wheels on the landing gear because when the were uncoupled , the brakes would run out of air and when hooked up they would roll, so therefore had wheels so the the supports would not get damaaged!

Thanks for that info! I didn't know that! That's interesting!

@@jrsoscaletrains I have been a truck driver for30 years, so I got to see and operate the last of those old trailers in the early 90’s. Big fan of your channel!

I actually liked the old style better. I like the new ones too but the older ones were easier to use

Yes, it’s hard to get the trailers into the chocks on the new ones.

well this is when a 3d printer comes into play the old box trailors you could make an add of a wind deflector to the trailors no one else would have them be in first and make them or get some made i am allways in for something that one else has

Hey JR these cars are nice but I found mine to have fitment issues getting into the wheel chocks it was very tight. Did you have this issue as well?
@jrsoscaletrains2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do have the same issues. When I try to place the trailer in the wheel chocks, the mud flaps get in the way and I have to pull them back so they hang outside the chock. Also, like you said, the wheels are tight to fit in the chocks and I have to push the trailer down with a little force to get them in the chocks.

@@jrsoscaletrains that’s what I had to do as well I like the hassle free fitment of the old cars better

You have to squeeze the tires together from both sides, a production oversite.

They always have been both types of flats and trailers, nothing new here. MTH flats still sit way too high compared to Lionel's PS-4's.
