In 1975 when Rhoda was shown on television, I found that Valerie Harper's character of Rhoda to be the example of the single woman making it on her own during the 1970's women's liberation movement era. The show gave us self-esteem. The clothes Valerie Harper and Mary Tyler Moore wore on their shows were sold in stores everywhere. I wore everything that was like Rhoda's character because, for one the clothes suited me well and for two even the makeup and scarfs looked awesome on me too. I was sixteen and felt great. Forever, I will remember Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper who paved the way for young women like me who was living on my own and was working that I too could do it and accomplish a lot more without having to be married or even be tied to a man if I did not want too. That I could do anything I really wanted to do in this generation and I have and still do thanks to these wonderful women. Even Oprah Winfrey says the same thing I am saying to you now! Thank you Mary and Valerie. Bless you both. RIP Nancy Walker and many others. :} Cheers and God bless all. xoxo

@@Iwtchutube What part of Lorraine Tauson's post was "feminazi/man-hating"? Jesus, take it down a notch. Being an independent woman has nothing to do with hating men, nor choosing to share your life with a man. Nobody said there was anything wrong with traditional man/woman roles. (Or did you mean "rolls" as in bread?) But there are different options for different people. Clearly, if so many women have chosen careers over traditional marriage and children, the feminine role needed to be updated. Otherwise, we'd all be Beaver Cleaver's mother, now wouldn't we? I wouldn't give up my son or my career for anything, especially the traditional married-with-children lifestyle my mother hated so much. But to each his or her own. BTW, my son didn't need a traditional mother, nor traditional mother/father co-habitation. He turned out very well - I'm thinking better than a child someone as close-minded as you could produce. And I didn't need a man to give me financial stability, either. I've managed a life, a mortgage, car, retirement plan all on my own, thanks.

Am I the only one who likes "Rhoda" better than its predecessor, MTM Show? I just find it so much more fresh and original. MTMShow was good - you can't help but love Lou, Murray, and Mair...and Phyllis and RHODA and Sue Ann. But Valerie was just such a virtuosa comedienne, PERFECT comedic timing. She was just beyond incredible. And with Julie Kavner and the continuation of Nancy Walker as Ma...all so perfect. Valerie was far funnier than anyone else on MTMShow - when she was on camera, it was magic. Such a natural, she was.

@@marinazagrai1623 Mary's show also launched the groundbreaking "Lou Grant", which was on for 5 years. Ron Silver really was a doll. I sort of feel that he was under-utilized as the male neighbor who became just a friend to both Rhoda and Brenda. Initially he was interested in Rhoda but then she was still so hung up on Joe she couldn't see him or any other guy as a romantic possibility. At some point I guess the writers just decided that the character of Gary Levy worked best as a sexually neutral pal, but he was cute and funny and I think there could have been a believable love story line between either of the Morgenstern sisters eventually. Hey, but then the series itself was grinding to an obvious close already by Season Four.

So many times she just seems overly needy, overly dramatic that in most ways men dont find long term attractive. In fact, unlike the millennials, most of us were told just the opposite. In particular we were told things like "we don't know anything because we are still "wet behind the ears."" You are nothing special, etc., etc. Why do you think baby boomers lavished praise on their children and sponsored giving everyone a trophy just because they were participants? It is because baby boomers were trying to overcompensate for not having that praise from their parents. We were NEVER, and I mean NEVER congratulated for any accomplishment, even if that accomplishment was major. We were NEVER told that someone is proud of us. And this is EXACTLY why so many of us were and may still be insecure. And then to top it all off, we are now told by millennials that it is our generation that is to be blamed for everything wrong in the world now!!! I swear that we were abused and belittled as youth and now that we are older and had some hope that we would be respected by the newer generations just as we had respected our elders, instead we are further belittled and demeaned by the millennials. Sometimes I think we baby boomers should be called "the generation that was screwed coming and going!" But I will tell you one thing! We are FED UP and I will say it again we are FED UP with the abuse. We had no child protective services or any other agency to protect us as children. We had to take the abuse because we had absolutely no other alternative than to live with our parents or end up in juvenile hall. No one EVER thought that the child was abused when we baby boomers were children!!! So if you wonder why so many of us our insecure, that is the reason!

@annasarris70984 жыл бұрын
I AGREE it IS Rhoda's fault. She gets all possessive and angry too quick. She wanted to marry Joe before they dated, literally. She wants this guy for a steady boyfriend after the 2nd date. It's true Rhoda is indeed nuts! Remember when she took time off from work so she could see Joe? Then when Joe he said he had to work she burst into flames? She didn't even check with him to see if he could take the time off! She just assumed he'd be free! Sounds to me that Rhoda is full of herself.

It's that age old problem; you attract your insecurities. Rhoda always struggled with self esteem and feelings of not being good enough. She then attracts men that fed that emotional need. At the same time she's strong, opinionated and independent and has a tendency to push her ideals on others. So here she is yet again falling in love with a man she knows doesn't want to get in a monogamist relationship but still tries to change him.

Agreed. The Writers should have lightened up on Rhoda being exasperated and angrier... after the first three seasons. Something about it lacked energy. I never liked the character of Joe, because he was always exasperated and angry about some thing.
@shaharazon24494 жыл бұрын
She didnt force him. she just decided not to continue with him after she found out how he was. She rushed into the situation outa being on the rebound..Besides. theres a difference between being soneones plaything.on their terms plus not being upfront about it..or seeing someone and seeing how it goes down the road. ..This guy wants to degrade Rhoda and that will never happen The writers will not do that to her charactor..Im surprised they illuded thar she slept with the user. Then make her seem uncool not to just say ok. ill just fool around whenever..taking advantage of her since she has no children.

She's allowed to set her own boundaries on what she's comfortable with. She did push Joe, in a way, but he also agreed to her terms. It just wasn't gonna work, though, if either one of them had to compromise as much as he did. There wasn't enough communication about this.

This is pathetic. Why would she agree to this selfish, one-sided arrangement just to have this man in her life? They obviously have no future with him asking why she’d “like to jump back into air-tight security?” as if that were bad. Such a stupid question.
@Tanji202515 жыл бұрын
Because she knows that the world is not filled with someone you click with all the time. They have chemistry, sparks fly. She likes this guy. Should she tell him to bite it? Of course. And I think she will. But she's newly divorced, maybe lonely, and still insecure from it. I understand why she's agreeing to this at first, though. Make no mistake, she knows she's wrong. Also, P.S., this is just fiction. It is a sitcom, a made up story.

I have been watching all of these seasons, quite a few times actually ( I don't have a tv), and really enjoy them, one comment, Rhodas make up( on her face): it appears to be grey based, there is definitely something dark or odd about her face, what do other people think?
@eduardo_corrochio5 жыл бұрын
Funny, I was about to comment and say that the makeup person has used way too much gray in Valerie's makeup this season. I didn't even know that there was gray in TV face makeup, but here it is. It's off-putting and unnatural. All the other actors featured here look fine. Weird.

It looks as though they were trying to make her tan paler by powdering over it. If she suddenly looked really tanned then they’d have to explain it in the show. But they didn’t do a good job.

What destroyed this show was allowing the characters of Rhoda and Joe to divorce and then the fact the show ran its course; meaning the scripts were not fresh and the program should have ended a few years earlier.

More likely, they never should have married in the first place, as being single was part of her definition. But dating an endless parade of men wouldn't have worked, either. If Mary had married, then how merry would Mary have been?

The producers of the show thought a single woman would give them more story lines.

Mike sounds like another joe. She should take the hint. Joe didn’t really want to be married and she more or less forced him into a corner and look what happened. Mike really does not want to commit. Don’t force him, because he won’t stick with it.

Value yourselves ladies! If commitment is what you want, DON'T compromise to an occasional booty call...stop making it EZ for men to hit and quit it...you'll look desperate, thirsty. Smh ...and still, you DON'T get what you want.

I like gary but who she dates is not his business. Rhoda acts like an idiot when mike arrives. Rhoda needs to chill out. Even 5 dates does not mean it will lead to anything...she acts like a teenager going steady.

It’s not really about dates but intention. Women should be treated with respect regardless of whether they are having sex or not. This character saw women as playthings not people

+Michel Blanchard I respectfully disagree. I think Harper and Hirsch have a nice chemistry, a New York thing as it were, and certainly he can match her in terms of comedy timing. If Hirsch had played Joe Girard maybe the marriage might have worked. It would certainly have been funnier.
