The MTM is great but dated. Rhoda seemed a bit more realistic. I think keeping Joe and having Ida and her husband involved in their lives would have made it pragmatic, maybe lasting more than five seasons.

Even though this was a great show and well written, the one flaw they had was that they couldn't seem to make up their mind whether to have her married or separated or divorced. The whole premise of the show was to have her married, but then they apparently didn't seem to know how to properly write for a married couple. They did at first. It was very believable. But then by season 2, they suddenly wanted to get rid of Joe, but instead of just getting rid of him, they dragged it out by making him into a selfish jerk who only wants to see Rhoda whenever he feels like it... but doesn't seem to want to break up altogether. But I think they could have kept his character and continued to make the show about a newly married couple. So they just seemed to handle that whole situation in a wishy-washy way. By not getting rid of Joe's character for a while, it made you think that they weren't sure if they might want to have them get back together at some point. I know David Groh did not like how they went with his character, and he certainly didn't want to leave the show. But anyhow, despite all of that, it was still a great show in many ways. But I think it could have gone on longer, if they had handled that situation better. There have been plenty of sitcoms with married couples that were funny, so I don't buy the idea that you couldn't have Rhoda continue to be married and still be funny.

Kind of weird and silly that everything was fine in the last episode of the last season, and the new season starts with him wanting out of the marriage? Not to mention how he was suddenly so hostile and cold.

What were they thinking with Rhoda's hair, with the bun and full head bang, lol. It looks like a bag on her head.

Best video accompaniment bird in a tree to bird in newspaper-lined cage. It told a story from tree to timber to paper to a published newspaper. Another great theme song, "Lou's Blues" from Patrick Williams. Williams also composed the great '70s themes from "The Streets of San Francisco" and "The Bob Newhart Show" aka, "Home to Emily." May Bob Newhart RIP.

The young woman who played Joe's neighbor was Valerie's step-daughter at the time, Wendy Schaal, daughter of her then husband Richard Schaal.

This shiw could've been more successful and surpassed many many seasons if Rhoda's parents, especially her mom would have had more of a presence...and of course, no divorce

Some of my work is in the mental health field, I am often curious how the various issues were addressed in the past. Ideas have come a long way, but building the budgets and educating individuals and community is still an enormous challenge.
