No matter what the official reason for the show being canceled, Joe & Rhoda splitting up is the real reason. What a bummer!!

Tempus Fugit. Seeing Gary and Rhoda (Ron Silver and Valerie Harper) so young and vibrant in this show; it is hard to believe that they have now both passed away. What also is hard to believe is that it has been so many years since the television show "Rhoda" was on the air. It seems like yesterday and it has been over 40 years ago. Live your life people because it goes very, very quickly.

Guys dressed like that in the 80s too. Not the punks but rockers and c&w. Just boot cut jeans instead of bells after 82 or so. I love it. I hate the styles guys have worn since the 90s. Especially straight leg and those jeans that look like they have on a 2 day old diaper and showing their boxers. It took me forever to get with it and wear straight legs myself. Thank goodness the styles are coming back. Now if they just wouldn't bring back polyester !

Their apartment always reminded me of my sister’s first house, ie the colours, the spider plants, and just general Nic-naks etc. All clearly of that era no matter what side of the pond you lived. Theirs was a big old 3 storey English terrace house, but yet every time I watch this supposed NY apartment it is so similar style wise interiorly and colours etc to my sister’s house.

Clearly you haven't watched the show. Joe never wanted to get married. He told Rhoda that. Joe was perfectly honest with her, about getting a bigger apartment, and gettingf married. What more should he have done? Maybe...she should have listened...like you. She gave him an ultimatum. She should have never done that. Also, she was clingy, demanding, annoying and selfish. The majority of folks are spot on: over the course of 2-3 seasons, the show needed Rhoda moving back to NY, meeting different men, then meeting a special man to whom she eventually gets engaged, THEN get married (and that could have been an entire season itself), then having a baby.......that could be a whole other season.......instead they made our favorite friend/daughter/sister have a disaster of a relationship, and ruined a good show. Not to mention that David Groh suffered for about 2 years bc of this plot change; he got all kinds of hate mail, threats, etc (there can be a fine line between reality and fantasy).

Gary is hilarious! The "Welcome" mat beside the round bed and the enormous disco ball in his bedroom are screamingly funny. I turned 21 in 1974, and the character of Gary nailed the lounge lizard, necklace wearing types from that era. The aviator-style glasses were an accessory staple. The only things he's missing are white shoes and a white belt. UGH!! Even his pickup lines are spot on. There was a tacky so-called singles bar here in LVL called Flaherty's III where Gary would've fit right in. There were DROVES of these guys in the place on any given night. I'm pretty sure a large percentage of the "single guys" weren't. There were no natural fibers to be found adorning these clowns (at least Gary wears denim), My friends and I only went to the place once, mainly to observe, and stayed only 30 minutes. It was surreal.

Melanie Hamilton The same stereotype jerk appeared in the Australian culture during the late 1970s and 1980s. I remember it well because I was teenager and I would see Gary clones in the Sydney area. They were often mistaken for homosexuals because they wore weird clothing just like the character Gary. It wasn't exactly part of the macho Aussie fashion culture back then.

Rhoda was too insecure but Joe was a condescending douche, especially in this episode. Valerie Harper in pigtails back then would've been enough for me to come back to her and never let her go. I admire her courage in her battle against brain cancer. She is now 75 and I hope she makes it to 80 at least. My mom passed away in July 2013 from stage 4 brain cancer at 58 after a five and a half year battle. Her 60th birthday would've been this December. I don't care either way for most celebrities and I didn't see this show in first run since I was only 5 when it ended, but I admire, respect, and even love Valerie Harper and I wish nothing but the best for her.

She compliments him, he ignores her and says "Lets just settle down and do the bills." Settle down!!??? "Speaking as a "friend" !!?? What kind of "friend" skips out on his share of the rent after he left his "friend" high and dry?! "Don't let an apartment get betwwen us. We're more important than an apartment." And she says "that's beautiful, Joe." BEAUTIFUL???!!! "There's no need to make this a sad day, I don't want to be sad." And Rhoda says: "You're right Joe." And she THANKS him for flirting with her after he just tore her life to pieces. "But no big deal." "You're absolutely right, Joe." No. Joe is NOT right. I hate Joe. 😡 And I want to slap some sense into Rhoda.

Yes, you're absolutely right! You do that, just go ahead and march right down to that fake Manhattan studio apartment from 40 years ago and slap him right upside the face! Serve him right.

Joe is very selfish; he wants to have his cake and eat it too. He chose to move out and now sticks Rhoda with the rent. She's so gorgeous and could do better.

Gary is a lot more likable here than Joe. It’s sad the writers decided to turn Joe from Rhoda’s dream man into an obviously cheating jerk. Sad slide in this series from happy family show to artifact of the me generation. This show may even document the fall of our civilization, who knows?

Please stop blaming the writers. It was a production decision - as in the producers, one of whom plays Carlton the Doorman.

I'm not sure if Joe was cheating in this episode. But he did annoy me because separating from Rhoda hurt her a lot. The only time I truly thought Joe cheated was the time he stayed out all night & claimed he was out taking a walk.
