I love this episode. What's interesting was that early in her career, Valerie Harper was a trained and professional dancer ( Radio City Music Hall, and was in several Broadway musicals.) So at the beginning of the dance sequence she has to try look like an average person who doesn't really know how to move, copying the professional dancers in Johnny's act. I think it takes good acting skills to look like you don't know how to do something you're actually very talented at.

OH MY GOD! Did not know she had that training! Just like Mary Tyler Moore, this took me by freakin' surprise! I revisited that old solo dance clip from the Dick Van Dyke Show this afternoon. Although, the bald bespectacled dude playing Rob (Petrie's?) boss jumped in for a bit. It is now after midnight and I am seeing this on Rhoda for the first time. I used to watch this show as a kid, when it first came out, but I do not really remember THIS scene! That being said I must say, of course: RIP Mary Tyler Moore & RIP Valerie Harper We will miss you both and always remember.

Emily Edwards Yeah, baby! Valerie Harper was a dancer in NYC and actually worked at Radio City Music Hall, not as a Rockette, but as one of group called something like the Golden Drops, all dressed in gold tutus and dancing ballet. She was also in a few Broadway productions back then. I've always really liked her. She claims that she got the role of Rhoda on the "MTM Show" because she showed up for the audition in a parka, carrying a bucket and a sponge. Her very good idea. Remember the first time we see Rhoda in the pilot episode of "MTM"?

I love how they let Brenda be influenced by Johnny's "charm". This has to have been Michael DeLano's best gig ever, in terms of the character. He did 11 episodes after Rhoda and Joe separated. I watched a partial Wonder Woman episode with him (and Paul Sand, another fave, but diametrically opposed to Michael) but he didn't sparkle like he does here. I have to admit that when I was in my late 20s and watching, I didn't enjoy him nearly as much as I do in my mid 70s - hmmm, LOL.
@AnnusMirabilus2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for offering some insight into why Michael DeLano never made it huge. When you watch him in this role you think, "why didn't he break as huge as Travolta or something?" But maybe he was just a one note guy.

Johnny Venture is very cute but crass. It is sweet though how Johnny always includes Brenda, and treats her as though he and Rhoda are married. Brenda needs to chill out. I still have one of those small cosmetic suitcases like the little brown one Rhoda fastens before leaving. Mine is pale blue. They come in handy, and were usually with luggage sets during the 1950s-1970s. I saved mine because I knew they'd no longer be made, and couldn't be bought. Elvis wore a lot of necklaces and flashy rings, but he was never vulgar. If Johnny had been decent and loyal, I always wondered how a marriage would have been between Rhoda and him.

I agree with "guesswho2390." This episode, like a few others in this series, seemed to be tailor made for the guest actor. It sometimes feels like they're testing the character to see if she/he resonates with the audience, maybe for a spin-off? For me, Johnny Venture was a bust. He's over-the-top and annoying, and the way he constantly rides Rhoda is a real turn off.
